SECRET AGENTS : RULERS OF THE MODERN WORLD
SIMA~SIAL'S MONGOLIAN SS - THE SLAVS LAVA EMPIRE
The Skull and Bones Mongols make up one of the chief ethnic divisions of Asian peoples.
Their traditional homeland is a vast plateau in Central and Northeast Asia. The Himalayan origin of the Mongols is kept secret. The earliest reference to them by name is in a document of the Chinese T'ang Dynasty (618-907).
By the 13th century these nomadic tribes had become a powerful military force. Under the leadership of Genghis Khan and his successors, they established an empire that reached from what is now China and Korea in the east to Eastern Europe and the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
In 1206 Temujin was elected head of a federation of Mongol tribes. His title within the All, the Mongols league, was Genghis Khan. Between 1206 and 1227, when Genghis Khan died, the Mongols conquered a dominion that stretched from the China Sea to the Caspian. On the north it bordered the forest belt of Siberia, and on the south it touched the Pamir range, Tibet, and the central plains of China.
The first attack was launched against the Hsi-Hsia, who occupied a border state in northwestern China. By 1215 all of northern China, including the capital at Ta-tu (now called Beijing), had been taken. In 1218 the Mongols moved into eastern Turkestan. Between 1219 and 1225 they added western Turkestan. Advance troops penetrated into southern Russia and raided cities in the Crimea.
The Mongol Empire created by Genghis Khan was not a un
ified state but a vast collection of territories held together by military force. Because it was controlled by so many military leaders, all theoretically responsible to the great khan, the empire carried within it the seeds of its own breakdown.
Central power rested with the khan and his councillors. Although they were well organized militarily, the Mongols had no developed concept for ruling settled populations. The various territories were under the authority of military commanders.
New conquests were not administered--just economically exploited. In areas that were under subjugation longer, there was some growth of administration. Local bureaucracies, though dominated by Mongols, usually followed administrative patterns that had been locally developed. This was especially true in China, with its ancient and vast bureaucracy.
While Genghis Khan was still living, he divided the empire between his four favorite sons. Tului, the youngest, received the original Mongol homelands and parts of northern China. Ogadai received western Mongolia and part of northwestern China. Chagatai was given most of Turkestan in Central Asia. The oldest son, Juchi, received southwestern Siberia, western Turkestan, and Russian lands stretching north of the Black Sea. A fifth section of the empire was later added when Hulagu, a son of Tului, conquered Iran, Iraq, and Syria in the 1250s.
Genghis Khan
and his eldest son, Juchi, both died in 1227. At a convocation of Mongol leaders, Ogadai was appointed supreme khan. Juchi's lands in the west were inherited by his son Batu. Ogadai made his capital at Karakorum in central Mongolia. He immediately set out to add more of China to the Mongol conquests. By 1234 all but the southernmost region of China had been incorporated.
In the west Batu Khan began a series of campaigns in 1236 in Russia and Eastern Europe. Central and northern Russia at this time consisted of city-states and principalities. These fell one by one to attacks of Batu's Golden Horde, as his Mongol armies came to be called.
Resistance in Russia ceased after the fall of Kiev in 1240. Batu's armies reached central Germany before turning southward to establish themselves in Hungary by 1241.
The Mongol advance in Europe was stopped in 1241 by the death of Ogadai. Batu and his generals gave up their Eastern European territory to return for the election of a new khan. Because the succession was disputed for several years, Europe was saved from further incursions.
That task was outsourced during the so-called Christian Crusades, to the military Knights of St. John, usually called Knights Hospitalers; to the French Knights Templar; to the Teutonic Knights; and of course oversight was given to the Holy Roman Empire's Ecclesiastic Freemasonry and its investor arm, the Vatican Bank.

t died two years later. He was succeeded by Mongke, a son of Tului. Under him the empire was expanded into unsubdued neighboring countries. The main new conquest was in the Middle East. Hulegu, a brother of Mongke, overthrew the Islamic caliphate of Baghdad in 1258.
The only defeat the Mongols suffered was at the hands of the Mameluke Dynasty of Egypt in 1260.
Hulegu's conquests resulted in the creation of a kingdom of nearly independent rulers, the Il-khans of Persia, which lasted until 1353.
In the east another campaign was opened against China. During the conflict Mongke died in August 1259. He was succeeded by his brother Kublai. The selection of Kublai Khan marked a turning point in Mongol history. In theory he was ruler of the whole empire, but he came to regard himself primarily as a Chinese emperor. The other parts of the empire began to go their separate ways. Under Kublai the center of power moved away from Mongolia into China. He completed the conquest of China and founded the Yuan, or Mongol, Dynasty, which endured until 1368.
After Kublai's death in 1294 the Mongol Empire fragmented. The most enduring of the resulting areas was the Golden Horde, which flourished until 1480. The territory of the Golden Horde, at its peak, included most of European Russia from the Urals to the Carpathians, and it extended eastward deep into Siberia. The capital was Sarai Batu, on the Volga River.
The only other notable Mong
ol conqueror appeared in the 14th century in the person of Timur Lenk, also known as Tamerlane. Timur was born in Kesh, near Samarkand, Transoxania (today's Uzbekistan), in 1336. He was a member of the Turkic Barlas clan of Mongols. He first led a small nomad band to establish control of the area between the Jaxartes and Oxus rivers in his homeland.
In the early 1380s he invaded Moscow and stopped a Russian rebellion against the Mongol descendants of Genghis Khan. Eastern Persia fell to him by 1385, and by 1394 Fars, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Mesopotamia, and Georgia were in his control. In 1398 he invaded India and sacked Delhi. He then invaded Syria and Asia Minor.
In 1404 he was back in his capital of Samarkand making preparations for the conquest of China. At the end of December the expedition set out, but he soon fell ill. He died near Chimkent (now in Kazakhstan) on Jan. 19, 1405. His body was buried in the mausoleum Gur-e Amir.
His dynasty, the Timurid Dynasty, survived for about another century. One of his descendants, Baber, founded the Mughal Dynasty of India.
As ruler of the principality of Fergana in Turkestan, his birthplace, Baber first tried to recover Samarkand, the former capital of the empire founded by his Mongol ancestor Timur Lenk, or Tamerlane.
He occupied the city briefly in 1497 and in 1501, but could not hold it. He lost his own kingdom in 1503, seized Kabul, Afghanistan, the next year, and made a final unsuccessful attempt to capture Samarkand in 1511-12.

e defeated the sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi, at the battle of Panipat (1526). He extended his domain in 1527 when, fighting with an outnumbered army, he defeated Rana Sanga, who led an army formed by a confederacy of Indian kingdoms. In 1529 Baber subdued the last major resistance in northern India.
His grandson, Akbar, consolidated the empire. Akbar's reign was noted for good government and a flourishing cultural life. He reformed the army, the civil service, and the collection of taxes.
Foremost among his accomplishments was the centralization of all authority in the person of the emperor. This reportedly helped prevent abuses of power by local administrators and tax collectors.
Inequalities of wealth and poverty persisted in India despite Akbar's efforts to institute reforms. The emperor urged those who had great wealth to use it to become patrons of the arts. Although he was himself illiterate, his intelligent and inquiring mind led him to establish an elaborate court in which culture and the exchange of ideas were welcomed.
Akbar promoted tolerance in religion and invited Muslims, Christians, and Hindus to debate before him.
By the time Akbar died in 1605, his kingdom included most of the Indian subcontinent, Baluchistan, and Afghanistan. Such was the excellence of his administrative reforms that vestiges of them survive in the provincial governments of present-day India and Pakistan.

THROUGH THE GLASS AND PAST THE TAIN
Old Kingdom : Ancient Egypt during the III-VI Dynasties, from c. 2980 to 2475 B.C. The Old Kingdom was noted as ‹the Age of the Pyramids,Š with magnificent monuments built by rulers such as Cheops.
Middle Kingdom : Ancient Egypt during the V-XVII Dynasties, from c. 2050 to 1800 B.C. A thin plate, a TAIN.
New Kingdom : Ancient Egypt during the XVIII-XX Dynasties, from c. 1580 to 1090 B.C. The New Kingdom was noted for its territorial expansion and richness of art and architecture under rulers such as Amenhotep III and Rameses II.
The Old Kingdom
Little is known of Menes' successors until the reign of King Zoser, or Djoser, at the end of the 3rd dynasty. Zoser's capital was located at Memphis, on the Nile's west bank near the point where the Two Lands met. Imhotep, a master builder, erected Zoser's tomb, the step pyramid of Saqqara, on high ground overlooking the city. This monument--the first great building in the country made entirely of stone--marked the beginning of Egypt's most creative period, the Pyramid Age.
Later kings built their tombs in true pyramidal form. Each pyramid guarded the body of one king, housed in a chamber deep within the pile. The climax of pyramid building was reached in the three gigantic tombs erected for Kings Khufu (Cheops), Khafre, and Menkure at Giza (Gizeh). Near them in the sand lies the Great Sphinx, a stone lion (a new 10) with the head of a human. It symbolized the planned coming of a genetically engineered supe
r-human.
The Old Kingdom lasted about 500 years. It was an active, optimistic age, an age of peace and splendor. Art reached a brilliant flowering. Sculpture achieved a grandeur never later attained. The pharaoh kept a splendid court. The people worshiped him as a god on Earth, for they believed him to be the son of Ra, or Re, the great sun-god. They called him pr-'o (in the Bible, pharaoh), meaning "great house."
About 2200 BC the Old Kingdom came to an end. Nobles became independent and ruled as if they were kings. The country was split up into small warring states. Irrigation systems fell into disrepair. According to writers of the time: "The desert is spread throughout the land. The robbers are now in the possession of riches. Tollgaters sit in the bushes until the benighted traveler comes to . . . steal what is upon him." Thieves from the underground broke into the pyramids and robbed them of their treasures. The archaeologists of today can only imagine the splendid treasures they might have unearthed had Mafia thieves not stolen them first.
The Middle Kingdom
The Middle Kingdom period began about 2050 BC. After a long struggle, the rulers of Thebes won out over their enemies and once again united Egypt into a single state. Thebes was then a little town on the Nile in Upper Egypt. In the New Kingdom it became one of the ancient world's greatest capitals.
The pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom constructed enormous irrigation works in the Faiyum. Noting the annual heights of the
Nile flood at Aswan, they laid plans to use the Nile water wisely. They sent trading ships up the Nile to Nubia and across the sea to Mediterranean lands. They got gold from Nubia and copper from the mines in Sinai. Construction of the most colossal temple of all time, the Temple of Amen (Amon) at El Karnak, was begun.
After two centuries of peace and prosperity, Egypt entered another dark age. About 1800 BC it fell for the first time to foreign invaders. Down from the north came the Mongolian Hyksos, a barbarian people who used horses and chariots in combat and also had superior bows. The Egyptians, fighting on foot, were no match for them. The Hyksos occupied Lower Egypt, living in fortified camps behind great earthen walls; but they failed to conquer Upper Egypt. When the Egyptians had learned the new methods of warfare, the ruler Kamose began a successful war of liberation.
The New Kingdom
A new era dawned for Egypt after the Hyksos had been enslaved. This period, the New Kingdom, was the age of empire. The once-peaceful Egyptians, having learned new techniques of warfare, embarked on foreign conquest on a large scale. The empire reached its peak under Thutmose III, one of the first great generals in history. He fought many campaigns in Asia and extended Egypt's rule to the Euphrates (Iraq).
Slaves and tribute poured into Egypt from the conquered nations. The tribute was paid in goods, for the ancient world still did not have money. Wall paintings show people from Nubia, Babylonia, S
yria, and Palestine bearing presents on their backs and bowing humbly before the pharaoh.
The Egyptian rulers used their new wealth and slaves to repair the old temples and build new ones. Hatshepsut, Egypt's first great female leader, enlarged the great Temple of Amen at El Karnak. She also built her own beautiful temple at Deir el Bahri.
Amenhotep III built the wonderful temple at Luxor and put up the famous pair of colossal seated statues called the Colossi of Memnon. In the Middle Kingdom period, the pharaohs of Thebes had built modest brick pyramids for their tombs. In the New Kingdom period they broke with this tradition and began to hew tombs deep in the cliffs of an isolated valley west of Thebes. About 40 kings were buried in this Valley of the Tombs of the Kings.
In the last years of his reign Amenhotep III paid little attention to the empire. It was already decaying when his son Amenhotep IV and his "wife" Nefertiti came to the throne. This king was more interested in religion than in warfare. Even before his father's death, he began to promote a new religious doctrine. He wanted the people to give up all their old gods and worship only the radiant sun, which was then called Aten (a 10; a coded name for a HERMAPHRODITE). He changed his name from Amenhotep ("Amen is satisfied") to Ikhnaton (Akhenaton) ("It is well with Aten"). He left Thebes and built a splendid new capital sacred to Aten at El Amarna in middle Egypt. Throughout the la
nd he had the word "gods" and the name "Amen" removed from tombs and monuments.
Ikhnaton's idea of a single god gained no hold on the Egyptian people. His successor, Tutankhamen, moved the capital back to Thebes and restored the name of Amen on monuments. Tutankhamen is famous chiefly for his lavishly furnished tomb, discovered in 1922. Its treasures reveal the luxury of the most magnificent period of Egyptian history.
Half a century later Ramses II completed the gigantic hall at El Karnak and set up many statues of himself. He also had his name carved on monuments built by earlier rulers, so that he became better known than any other king. He regained part of Egypt's Asian empire. But the kings who followed him had to use the army to defend Egypt against invaders.

FARM EMERGENCY
As we were removing snow from our farm's laneway friday, our four year old push type snow-thrower blew a rod that pierced through the motor. The snow-thrower expired.

THE "SEARCH" FOR WMD IN IRAQ
WMD OXYMORON SANCTUARY
In America, or anywhere else in the West for that matter, if one were to begin a search for Weapons of Mass Destruction, it would be reasonable for the seeker to begin the search at MILITARY BASES.
In the East's "Radical Islam" however, the search for WMD should be centered on the Madrasah religious-military mullas, the military Masters and Commanders whose home bases are the MOSQUES and other HOLY sites.
Yet, the American military, eventhough it spotted a 200 vehicle caravan leaving Baghdad and heading south before it DISAPEARRED into apparent thin air during a sandstorm in the first days of the US led invasion, has declared the HOLY sites in Iraq to be privileged religious SANCTUARIES, and therefore, off-limit in the search for Iraq's WMD.
Is this what is meant by the term Military-Intelligence ?
PS: The word oxymoron describes what happens to a human brain once oxygen (reality) is withheld from it for an extended period of time.

Secretary Cohen: Senator Nunn, thank you very much.
As Senator Nunn has indicated, he and I have worked for many years together, along with Senator Lugar. The two of these gentlemen I feel are perhaps the most courageous and visionary to have served in the Senate. They were largely responsible, of course, for adopting the so-called Nunn/Lugar legislation.
I'll comment on that later during the course of the morning, but I've had occasion to meet with a number of Russian counterparts, and as we go through various translations of the communications that we're having, the two words they are able to articulate very clearly, they say 'Nunn/Lugar, Nunn/Lugar. So they know exactly what that means, and that means the Cooperative Thre'at Reduction Act that these two gentlemen were indispensable in shepherding through the United States Congress.
It was Nunn/Lugar I that dealt with the reduction of nuclear weapons between the United States and the Soviet Union in terms of trying
to come to grips with how we helped the Russians dismantle hundreds of their nuclear weapons, and also helped them with their destruction of chemical weapons. But they, of course, have looked beyond simply that particular relationship, which is very important, but also looking to the future that we face as far as the rise of terrorism -- both international and domestic; and finding ways in which the Department of Defense can become involved in helping local states and local agencies to deal with the threat of terrorism which is quite likely to increase in the coming years.
It's a pleasure for me to be here. Both Senator Nunn and Senator Lugar are close friends and I look forward to, I think, a very productive seminar. Once again demonstrating that although Senator Nunn has left public service in the Senate, he has not left public service as far as the nation is concerned.

Senator Nunn: Thank you very much, Bill.
. ..Let me ask if there are any questions for Secretary of Defense Cohen.
Q: The dual containment policy in Iran and Iraq, do you think that's conducive to regional stability in that region? And do you think can cause further terrorism in the United States? That type of containment policy in the Middle East.
A: I think Secretary Albright articulated our policy as far as dealing with Iraq, that it's clear that we have been unable to strike any kind of a productive relationship with Saddam Huss
ein, and as soon as Saddam Hussein is no longer the head of that government, that there's new regime that follows him, that we will look forward to finding ways in which we could engage them in a much more productive fashion, particularly after they comply with all of the UN sanctions. There's an eagerness on our part to do that. But I think as long as he remains in office as the head of that state, it's unlikely that we could have anything but the current policy in place, with very little prospects for relief.
With respect to Iran, I think Iran continues to present a long term threat to the region. They are acquiring and have acquired weapons of mass destruction, substantial levels of chemicals and we believe biological weapons as well. They have made an effort to acquire nuclear capability. So I think that our policy of dual containment is the right one, and we are going to encourage our allies to support that one.
Q: What does it mean that Clinton (inaudible) proliferation?
A: To the extent that we see the level of communication available today, the Internet and other types of interwoven communicative skills and abilities, we're going to see information continue to spread as to how these weapons can be, in fact, manufactured in a home-grown laboratory, as such. So it's a serious problem as far as living in the information age that people who are acquiring this kind of information will not act responsibly, but rather act in a terrorist type of fashion.
We've seen by way of example of the World Trade Center the international aspects of international terrorism coming to our home territory. We've also seen domestic terrorism with the Oklahoma bombing. So it's a real threat that's here today. It's likely to intensify in the years to come as more and more groups have access to this kind of information and the ability to produce them.
Q: How prepared is the U.S. Government to deal with (inaudible)?
A: I think we have to really intensify our efforts. That's the reason for the Nunn/Lugar II program. That's the reason why it's a local responsibility, as such, but the Department of Defense is going to be taking the lead as far as supervising the interagency working groups, and to make the assessments as to what needs to be done. So we're going to identify those 120 cities and work with them very closely to make sure that they can prepare themselves for what is likely to be a threat well into the future.
Q: Let me ask you specifically about last week's scare here in Washington, and what we might have learned from how prepared we are to deal with that (inaudible), at B'nai Brith.
A: Well, it points out the nature of the threat. It turned out to be a false threat under the circumstances. But as we've learned in the intelligence community, we had something called -- and we have James Woolsey here to perhaps even address this question about phantom moles<
/em>. The mere fear that there is a mole within an agency can set off a chain reaction and a hunt for that particular mole which can paralyze the agency for weeks and months and years even, in a search. The same thing is true about just the false scare of a threat of using some kind of a chemical weapon or a biological one. There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least. Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops. Others are engaging even in an eco- type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.
So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important.
Q: What is response to (inaudible)?
A: We hope w
e will have access to the defector. In fact I was recently in South Korea and talked with various officials in South Korea. As soon as they complete their own interrogation of this defector, we will have access to that individual. But much of what he has said to date is reflected in the writings that he prepared last year. This is prior to his defection. One would not expect a potential defector to be writing about anything other than what the official doctrine or dogma is of the North Korean government at that time. He is saying essentially what we have known for a long, long time. Namely, that North Korea poses a very serious threat against South Korea, and potentially even Japan, by virtue of having the fourth largest army in the world, by having 600,000 or more troops poised within 100 kilometers of Seoul, of possessing many SCUD missiles, also the potential of chemically armed warheads, the attempt to acquire nuclear weapons. So we know they have this potential, and the question really is going to be what's in their hearts and minds at this point? Do they intend to try to launch such an attack in the immediate, foreseeable future? That we can only speculate about, but that's the reason why we are so well prepared to defend against such an attack to deter it; and to send a message that it would be absolutely an act of suicide for the North Koreans to launch an attack. They could do great damage in the short run, but they would be devastated in response. So we're hoping we can find ways to bring them to the bargaining t
able -- the Party of Four Talks -- and see if we can't put them on a path toward peace instead of threatening any kind of devastating attack upon the South.
Q: . ..a little bit about the situation in (inaudible)?
A: I really don't have much more information than has been in the press at this point. The Department has not been called upon to act in this regard just yet, so I'm not at liberty to give you any more information than you already have.
Q: . ..the Administration's plans to expand NATO to more European countries. Is there a terrorism element? Or will expanding NATO help you in any way in terms of (inaudible)? Or is it really unrelated?
A: I think the two are unrelated. There is a legitimate debate that will take place in terms of the pace of enlargement or whether there should be enlargement. Secretary Albright and I testified last week before the Senate Armed Services Committee, and it was a very, I think, productive debate. It's something that Senator Nunn, I think, feels very strongly about as well. The two of us, I think, found ourselves on the Senate Floor last year saying it was time for the American people to start debating this issue. So it's very important and there will be legitimate differences of opinion, but it's important that we bring this to the Senate for full debate and disclosure, and bring it to the American people. But I doubt if it's related to the spread of terrorism whatsoever.

The founding year of the religion of Islam is considered to be 622, the year that its founder, Muhammad, fled from Mecca to Medina, now in Saudi Arabia. Muhammad, like Mary, is said to have received a series of revelations through an angel (high degree Mason) and had begun to spread his doctrine of one God, known as Allah.
The revelations were later collected in the Koran, the holy book of Islam.
Muhammad's teachings angered many people in Mecca who believed in more than one god, and so Muhammad began his hijrah, or flight, to Medina. Eight years later he returned with a force of 10,000 and reclaimed Mecca, which is now the most holy city of Islam.

VESUVIUS, MOUNT : An active volcano in southern Italy, rising 4,190 feet (1,277 meters) above the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius is situated on the plain of Campania, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from the city of Naples. Its fiery eruptions have claimed a high toll in lives and property through the centuries, but the mountainside and surrounding area remain the home of more than 2 million people. There are industrial towns along the bay, and small agricultural centers thrive on the northern slopes.
The mountain originated some 200,000 years ago and for a time had only one peak. Now a high, semicircular ridge known as Mount Somma partly surrounds the main cone of Vesuvius and has a slope of its own, beginning at about 1,970 feet (600 meters) and climbing to 3,714 feet (1,132 meters). The area between the ridge and the cone is known as Valle del Gigante, or Giant's Valley. At the top of the cone is a large crater about 1,000 feet (300 meters) deep and 2,000 feet (600 meters) across.
Volcanic ash has made the soil of Vesuvius very fertile, and the lower slopes are covered with vineyards and orchards. Up the mountain from the farmlands, the volcano's slopes are cloaked with thickets of oak and chestnut trees. The wooded areas grow to the summit of the northern slope of Somma, but on the higher western side the chestnut groves give way to small shrubs on plateau areas at an alt
itude of 2,000 feet (610 meters). Still higher, the surface of the great cone is almost bare.
The temperature at the mouth of the volcano is measured daily by scientists using sophisticated equipment. Readings far above 1,000o F (540o C) are common. Rising temperatures are one indicator of forthcoming eruptions.
The most famous eruption of Vesuvius occurred in AD 79, when lava and ashes buried the towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. Excavations have uncovered parts of the cities. Since that disaster, nearly 50 eruptions of varying intensity have been reported. An eruption in 1631 buried villages and blew ashes as far as 150 miles (240 kilometers).
Despite the warnings of earthquakes for many months before the eruption, people remained in the area and more than 3,000 were killed. Another great upheaval in 1794 destroyed the village of Torre del Greco for the fourth time.
The eruptions of Vesuvius are of the highest degree of volcanic explosiveness. In this type of eruption, large volumes of gases boil out of gas-rich magma and generate enormous, nearly continuous jetting blasts.
The blasts rip apart and core out the magma column.
The volcano's fierce turbulence has caused many changes in the mountain's shape and height. In 1906 an eruption killed hundreds of people and reduced the volcano's height by several hundred feet. In 1944 another powerful surge raised the height by about 500 feet (150 meters)
and widened the top crater threefold to its present width.

In continental Europe the Gypsies are called tziganes (the spelling varies from country to country). The word gypsy is a corruption of "Egyptian," and Gypsies like to think that their ancestral home is Egypt. Actually they originated in northwest India.
Gypsies had been one of the nomadic tribes of that region, and for centuries they never went beyond the borders. Then about AD 1000 they ventured westward. They moved across Persia (Iran) and Armenia and into the Byzantine Empire. By the 1300s they were established in the Balkans and Hungary.
Here some of the Gypsies settled as serfs on the lands of noblemen and churchmen. Others were given permits to wander. These wanderers became tinkers, wood-carvers, and minstrels. The men panned for gold in the rivers, and the women told fortunes.
By about 1500, Gypsy bands reached the British Isles. There and in Western Europe they added horse trading, horseshoeing, and the care of sick animals to their trades. They developed the reputation of being shrewd and tricky, and they often indulged in petty thievery. Yet their skills at tinkering and animal care were sought after, and outsiders were delighted by their violin music and their mysteriously accurate predictions with the tarot fortune-telling cards.

Gypsy Language, Government, and Religion

FINANCIAL CRISIS
One of the few items left outstanding in the 1986-87 CANADA/USA Free Trade Agreement is the planned Financial Crisis.
It seems to me that Tax Cuts, the trade deficit, the low dollar, the War on Terror, the War and reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan, the formation of the new departments of Homeland Security, and a National Security Czar, hurricane relief in Florida and the reorganization of the FBI and CIA are almost enough to do the job.
The Asian TSUNAMI response plus the coming privatization of a portion of Social Security should put the PLANNED FINANCIAL CRISIS over the top.
Canada should now get Ottawa ready to pick up the pieces of a destroyed America, following the planned induced melt-down of Antarctica's ice shelves. By some strange coincidence, with the recent amalgamation, Ottawa has already enlarged its footprint on the ground for just that purpose.

Transcript casts doubt on Erebus report

Just-revealed transcripts from the cockpit voice recorder of the Air New Zealand jet that crashed on Mt Erebus in 1979 are crucially different from the published version used to blame the pilots for the disaster.
Retired Air New Zealand captain Arthur Cooper has come forward with the original transcripts of the flight deck conversations from flight TE901, which crashed in Antarctica 25 years ago, killing all 257 on board.
Mr Cooper was part of the team that transcribed the plane's voice recorder in Washington days after the crash, but their work has never been released.
Instead, an amended version of the transcript, with many important differences and additions, was published in the 1980 report of chief air accidents inspector Ron Chippindale, who blamed pilot error for the crash.
The Chippindale transcript has been criticised in the past, including by Justice Peter Mahon, whose 198
1 royal commission report blamed a computer blunder for the crash, but this is the first time the original transcript has been made public for comparison.
One oft-quoted phrase from the Chippindale report has an unidentified crew member saying "Bit thick here, eh Bert?" to support suggestions that the DC10 was lost and flying in clouds.
But there was no "Bert" in the crew, and passenger photos developed after the crash showed the jet was flying at all times clear of clouds.
Now it can be revealed that the phrase, and many others, does not appear in the original transcript, which was made using sophisticated equipment at the headquarters of the United States National Transportation Safety Board in Washington.
Mr Cooper approached The Dominion Post with the transcript after a television reconstruction during last week's 25th anniversary used the "Bert" quote and other disputed comments.
He wanted the record set right before the "mythical transcript" became accepted as fact.
The original was the most accurate transcript possible, and neither Mr Chippindale nor Justice Mahon could have improved on it from their own listening to the CVR tape, he said.
The "bit thick" phrase was not on the tape.
But Mr Chippindale stands by his transcript.
He said he did considerable work on the tape after the original transcript was prepared.
"As far as I'm concerned we have the best reconstruction we could get at the time."
However, he might have got
the name "Bert" wrong while listening to the tape.
"But the `bit thick here' comment was there," he said.
The differences were only minor and he did not see any point in arguing over it again now.
"The pilots, the airline, the investigators have all had a good going over during the past 25 years and it would be kinder for everyone involved, wherever the blame lies, for it to stop," he said.
The original transcript also reveals that the phrases "Where's Mt Erebus?" and "where are we?" were added in the Chippindale report. At the time it was said they showed the crew did not know where they were.
Justice Mahon's report said that TE901 crashed because the airline changed the navigation computer without telling the pilots, sending the jet into Mt Erebus instead of over the flat McMurdo Sound. (See : This may have been the test run for BOEING's four Auto Pilot flights on 9/11)

TSUNAMI v ICE SHELVES
The SHACKLETON, WEST AND AMERY ICE SHELVES of Antarctica were also in the direct path of the recent Indian Ocean TSUNAMI and their moorings could be damaged, although no one has yet mentioned whether or not this has happened.
Should these three ice shelves break off and fall into the Indian Ocean and melt away as icebergs normally do, we have yet to see the total effect of this recent 9.0 earthquake.
The resulting permanent rise in ocean levels would be much more damaging to coastline populations around the world than any 20 minute event caused by the TSUNAMI.

The only land route between Alaska and the rest of the mainland United States is the Alaska Highway. Most of it is in Canada.
It begins at Dawson Creek, B.C., stretches north 1,221 miles (1,965 kilometers) through British Columbia and Yukon Territory, then crosses the Alaska border. It runs 207 miles (333 kilometers) to Big Delta, where it connects with the Richardson Highway and extends 95 miles (153 kilometers) to Fairbanks. The total length from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks is 1,523 miles (2,451 kilometers).
United States Army engineers hurriedly constructed the highway for defense purposes during World War II. Originally called the Alcan Highway, it was built with the consent and help of Canada.
The route was chosen by the United States War Department to connect airfields and to maintain the Canol pipeline system. Construction began in April 1942, and the preliminary road was completed on November 20. The initial cost was 135 million dollars.
The Canadian section was transferred to the Canadian government in 1946 and is maintained by the Canadian Army Northwest Highway System.
Portions of the highway have been paved, but most of it is gravel, 26 feet (8 meters) wide.
By mid-June maintenance forces have repaired the damage caused by winter freezing and spring thaws.
