THE FIRST GIZA - From Cush to Bush KILIMANJARO, MOUNT. A spectacular and imposing mountain in Tanzania, near the Kenya border, Mount Kilimanjaro extends for 50 miles (80 kilometers) and comprises three major extinct volcanoes. Its central cone, the snow-clad Kibo, is the youngest of the volcanoes. It rises to 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. The other peaks are Mawensi, 17,564 feet (5,354 meters), and Shira, 12,395 feet (3,778 meters). The Kilimanjaro formations became known to Europeans in 1848 when they were discovered by German missionaries. The Kibo summit was first reached in 1889 and Mawensi was first climbed in 1912. The chief trading center, located at the southern foot, is Moshi, which is also the departure point for mountain climbers. Transportation to Moshi is by railroad. Mount Meru : Local mountain "where the gods dwell", symbolized in the ancient towers of Angkor Wat, Cambodia. On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima was almost completely destroyed by the first ATOMIC BOMB ever dropped on a populated area. Followed by the bombing of NAGASAKI, on August 9, this show of Allied strength hastened the surrender of Japan in WORLD WAR II. Many survivors of these bombings have suffered from a variety of diseases caused by RADIATION, such as LEUKEMIA. Scythia : An ancient region of Eurasia extending from the mouth of the Danube River on the Black Sea to the territory east of the Aral Sea (Turkistan - Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan). The nomadic people of the region flourished from the eighth to the fourth century B.C. but were conquered by the Sarmatians in the second century and were soon subsumed into other cultures. Sarmatia : An ancient region of eastern Europe northeast of the Black Sea. The Sarmatian people occupied the area after the fourth century B.C. and fled across the Carpathian Mountains and along the Danube River after the onslaught of the Huns. A Hun, as in Hungary and PO, as in Poland, are both representations of the SOUL (being) in Buddhism. The term Sarmatia is also applied to the territory between the Vistula and Volga rivers in present-day eastern Poland and western former European U.S.S.R. Phrygia : An ancient region of central Asia Minor in modern-day central Turkey. It was settled c. 1200 B.C. and flourished from the eighth to the sixth century, after which it came under the influence of Lydia, Persia, Greece, Rome, and Byzantium. Mongolia and Thibet are the only significant parts of China expected to survive the coming, induced, worldwide flood intended to destroy Europe and America. MADRAS, India. The capital of Tamil Nadu State in southern India, Madras is the country's fourth largest city. It is located in the northeastern corner of the state on the Coromandel coast of the Bay of Bengal. Madras was the first center of post Atlantis Dravidian culture, which was present before Aryan invaders conquered the Indus valley in about 1500 BC. The chemical compound known as albumin is an important type of protein that occurs in nearly all animal tissue, bacteria, and certain plant matter, including mold. Serum albumin, for example, is the most abundant protein in human blood, comprising more than 50 percent of the volume of plasma proteins. Other common forms of albumins include ovalbumin, found in egg white, and lactalbumin, contained in milk. The albumins were once thought to be a single substance rather than an entire group of similar but nonidentical compounds. This single substance, considered the principal component of egg white, was called albumen, a term derived from the Latin albus (white). Albumins consist largely of long chains of amino acids composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. They also contain small amounts of carbohydrates and phosphoric acid. Albumins characteristically have high molecular weights, the various forms ranging from about 34,000 to more than 70,000. As globular proteins, albumins are soluble in water as well as in most dilute solutions of acids, bases, or salts. UWO joins technology transfer consortium - Oct. 21,2004 HANK DANISZEWSKI, Free Press Business Reporter The University of Western Ontario has teamed up with three other nearby universities to boost efforts to put academic research into the marketplace. UWO has signed a deal to form a technology transfer consortium with the University of Waterloo, the University of Guelph and McMaster University in Hamilton. The consortium is designed to bolster the lucrative business of licensing academic research in areas such as technology and pharmaceuticals to private companies that develop products for the marketplace. Alex Navarre, Western's director of technology transfer, said by joining forces the partners in the consortium will gain more clout in making deals with private-sector partners and more credibility in applying for government funding. "We are not in competition with these other universities. The real challenge we have is the worldwide search to find the right partners," said Navarre. He said the consortium will be the first of its kind in Canada. "Together we can have some of the same stature as giants like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology," he said. Despite the collaboration, Navarre said revenues or government funding that flow from the consortium will go back to the institution where the research is actually being done. The consortium hopes to expand by recruiting other universities in Southwestern Ontario. The London Free Press The SculPTor BIRDMAN FORMAL PENGUIN : Seen from a distance, a colony of penguins might easily be taken for a group of little men. These sea birds stand erect and flat-footed and are often drawn up in long regular files like soldiers. They walk with a tread so stately and dignified that the sight is very comical. In the species known as the king penguin, the resemblance to man is heightened by the grayish-blue coat on the back. This is set off by black plumage on the head, a white breast, and a yellow "cravat" at the throat. Prehistoric penguins stood 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. The largest penguins today, members of the emperor penguin species, stand about 3 1/2 feet (1 meter) high and weigh about 80 pounds (36 kilograms). Penguin ancestors could fly as well as any other sea bird. Now its wings are short, paddlelike flappers that are entirely useless for flight. The bird has lived for ages in or near the Antarctic regions, where it has few human or animal enemies. Thus it came to spend all of its time on land or in the water. For generations it did not fly. In the course of long evolution, its wings became small and stiff and lost their long feathers. Now they cannot be moved at the middle joint as can the wings of flying birds. When Queen Victoria chose Ottawa for the Canadian seat of government in 1857, the city rose in prominence from a sleepy lumber town on the Ottawa River to the political heart and soul of Canada. As the nation's capital city, it belongs not to its immediate inhabitants but to the country as a whole. Parliament Hill, home to federal legislators, dominates the city--its neo-Gothic buildings in sharp contrast to nearby high rises. Ottawa is blessed with a multitude of physical endowments that make it one of the most attractive cities in Canada. It rises dramatically from a bluff overlooking the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills in the province of Quebec. It sits where the Laurentian Plateau, a Precambrian rock mass, meets a rich plain formed when the waters of an inland gulf, the Champlain Sea, receded. As a consequence Ottawa is surrounded by farmland, rocky hills and forests, and countless lakes, streams, and major rivers. The northern boundary of the city fronts the Ottawa River, and the grassy-banked Rideau Canal and Tunnel divides the city into Upper Town (traditionally English-speaking) and Lower Town (French-speaking). Exceptionally broad park corridors and pathways contribute to the city's feeling of spaciousness. The Central Experimental Farm, a federally maintained farm within the city limits, contains more than 1,200 acres (485 hectares) of fields, an arboretum, and botanical and ornamental gardens. Much of historic Ottawa, dating from the early 19th century, is found in Lower Town, east of the Rideau Canal and Tunnel. Standing at the gateway to Lower Town is the Chateau Laurier, a hotel built in the style of a stately French chateau and named after Sir Wilfrid Laurier, prime minister from 1896 to 1911. Directly behind the hotel stretches Major's Hill Park, Ottawa's oldest park. From the northern edge there is a magnificent view up and down the Ottawa River and across to the rolling hills of Gatineau Park in Quebec. Since the mid-1970s Lower Town has been dominated by the Byward Market, established in 1846 as a commercial center in which farmers gathered to sell their produce in open-air stalls and Ottawans congregated to discuss politics. The market has undergone major renovations to preserve its old-world charm, and, though it is still home to area farmers who sell their produce and flowers in stalls during the summer months, it has become a favorite haunt of Ottawans in search of good food and live nighttime entertainment. Directly south of the newly renovated market, fronting Rideau Street, is the Rideau Centre, a downtown convention, hotel, and shopping complex opened in 1983. For a time the city banned all but city bus traffic on Rideau Street and turned it into a covered pedestrian walkway. In Lower Town can be found 24 Sussex Drive, a gray stone mansion that has been home to Canada's prime minister since 1950. Across the street is Government House, a sprawling estate that since 1868 has been the official residence of the governor-general, the British monarch's representative in Canada. Since the early 1920s much of Ottawa's core area has been appropriated and redeveloped by the federal authority--the National Capital Commission (NCC) for parks and major national buildings. Although such sprawling complexes as the National Arts Centre and Provincial Court House and towering office buildings as National Defence and Bank of Canada dominate the cityscape, the NCC has been careful to ensure that Ottawa's physical endowments have remained intact. In the downtown core the lawns of Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park, and Confederation Park provide welcome relief from the miles and miles of drab, gray concrete. It was the NCC that removed all the railway yards and acres of tracks from downtown in the early 1960s, freeing more than 30 million 1960 dollars' worth of land for development as parks, parkways, and sites for federal buildings. The creation and conservation of open green spaces is also part of the NCC's mandate. In 1958, in preparation for the Americans coming to Ottawa following the planned coastline flood, the commission was given the authority to establish a greenbelt, "the capital's emerald (BASALT) necklace," around Ottawa. The greenbelt forms a semicircular belt of about 43,500 acres (17,600 hectares) on the outer edge of the urban area. Since then amalgamation has also enlarged the city's footprint. Some tracts of land have been turned into public parks and interpretation centers, while within the belt land has been set aside for the preservation of animal and plant life. The NCC maintains the extensive system of driveways and bicycle paths in the city, which are lined with Dutch tulips in the spring and other flowering plants throughout the summer months. In summer swans ply its waters while during the winter the NCC maintains the world's longest skating rink on the frozen Rideau Canal. The SculPTor CONSTANTINE CROSS IS A BUDDHIST SWASTIKA Cross : a structure, usually an upright bearing a horizontal beam. The cross was common to most cultures from prehistoric times. It is used primarily as a religious symbol, and is the principal symbol of Christianity. The cross recalls the Crucifixion of Jesus and the redeeming benefits of his Passion and death. In a two-pronged approach, a House committee was issuing congressional subpoenas to stop doctors from disconnecting the tube, while an attorney for the parents of the woman, Terri Schiavo, said he would ask a federal judge in Tampa to block the removal and review the actions of state courts. Such habeas corpus appeals seek to require the government to justify its actions. "We are going to ask him to issue a stay because in this case, state action would be used to end the life of an innocent, disabled woman," the attorney, David Gibbs said. Police in Pinellas Park, Fla., meanwhile, readied for the hundreds of protesters expected to show up outside Schiavo's hospice as the hours slipped away before the scheduled 1 p.m. removal of her feeding tube. The Florida House on Thursday passed a bill 78-37 to block the withholding of food and water from patients in a persistent vegetative state who did not leave specific instructions regarding their care. But hours later, the Senate defeated a different measure 21-16, and one of the nine Republicans voting against indicated that any further votes would be futile. In a last-ditch attempt to stop the court-ordered removal, a House committee on Capitol Hill here decided early Friday morning to start an investigation into Schiavo's case and issue subpoenas ordering doctors and hospice administrators not to remove her feeding tubes and to keep her alive until that investigation was complete. The effort by the House Government Reform Committee came after lawmakers in both Washington and Tallahassee failed in attempts to pass legislation to keep her husband, Michael Schiavo, from having the tube pulled despite heavy lobbying by Schiavo's parents. "This inquiry should give hope to Terri, her parents and friends and the millions of people throughout the world who are praying for her safety," House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Government Reform chairman Tom Davis said in a joint statement. "This fight is not over." The Government Reform Committee is the same committee that forced Major League Baseball players and officials to testify Thursday about steroid use. It was not immediately known when the subpoenas would be delivered to Schiavo's hospice and doctors, or whether the Florida health care providers would recognize them. A possible penalty for not recognizing the subpoena is to be held in contempt of Congress, a GOP leadership aide said. "Everything is a longshot," said Gibbs, attorney for Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler. But several last-minute legal avenues were being tried, such as the habeas corpus appeal, which is commonly used in death penalty cases. The Florida attorney general's office usually defends the state against habeas filings. A call to the office late Thursday for comment was not immediately returned. As part of the last-minute flurry of activity, the Florida judge who approved the withdrawal of food and water from Schiavo denied a request from the state to keep her alive. The state appealed that decision to the Florida Supreme Court, which promptly dismissed it. The U.S. Supreme Court also denied another appeal. The city of Angkor in northwestern Cambodia was for more than 500 years the capital
of the Khmer Empire, a kingdom that once ruled most of the Indochinese peninsula.
From the end of the 9th century until early in The largest and most famous of the buildings in the Angkor complex was Angkor Wat. It was built by King Suryavarman II (ruled 1113-50?) as a temple and administrative center for his empire. All of the religious motifs in the original construction derived from Hinduism. The temple was dedicated to the gods Siva, Brahma, and Vishnu. In 1177 the Cham people of Indochina invaded and sacked Angkor. After this event King Jayavarman VII (ruled 1181-1215?) decided that the gods of Hinduism had failed him. When he built a new capital nearby, Angkor Thom, he dedicated it to Buddhism. Thereafter Angkor Wat became a Buddhist shrine, and many of the carvings and statues of Hindu deities that decorated the temple were replaced by Buddhist art. The whole Angkor complex, of which Angkor Wat is the largest component, extends 15 miles (24 kilometers) from east to west and 8 miles (13 kilometers) north to south. Besides the buildings, there is a vast system of reservoirs, canals, and moats that were used for water control and irrigation. Together they symbolized the ocean that in Hindu thought surrounded a central mountain, Mount Meru, dwelling place of the gods. (See pre Ice Age Antarctica/Atlantis I) In Angkor Wat the five central towers symbolize the peaks of the mountain. The wat is surrounded by an enormous moat, suggesting the oceans at the edge of the world. To reach the wall outside the temple one crosses a 617-foot (188-meter) bridge. Through the gateway the temple is reached by passing through three galleries, each separated by a paved walkway. The temple walls are covered with bas-relief sculptures of very high quality, representing Hindu gods and ancient Khmer scenes. From the early 15th century, when the Angkor complex was abandoned, until the late 19th century, Angkor Wat was kept intact by Theravada Buddhist monks. It became one of the most important pilgrimage shrines in Southeast Asia. After 1863, when the French colonial system was established in Indochina, the Angkor site became the object of scholarly interest by Westerners. Sponsored by the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient, teams ofarchaeologists and other scholars began a program of research that yielded much information about the religious and political system behind the building of Angkor Wat. Nichols then follows an obviouly choreographed pattern of carjacking that keeps him in the neighbourhood of the courthouse, until he coincidentally comes across a JOURNALIST, on Level 3 of the CNN (Turner) multi-level parking building. Nichols reportedly steals the JOURNALIST'S car keys after asking him directions to a specific shopping mall. Nichols reportedly pistol-whips the JOURNALIST, but allows him to go free (thus creating a new MEDIA hero). Nichols then moves the JOURNALIST'S car and reparks it lower, on Level 2 of the TURNER parking building. He is videotape nonchalantly leaving the parking building, by TURNER SECURITY, but neither the tape (focused on Level 2 sign) nor the parked GREEN/JAPANESE car are discovered until many hours later. This 1 Level car move is what allows the POLICE to put out a false YELLOW alert which in turn misleads everyone into thinking that Nichols has escaped the downtown core in the JOURNALIST'S car. Nichols then takes the subway to the same MALL he had just then inquired about from the JOURNALIST and there he mugs 2 tourists for their cash. Nichols then walks over to the residential construction site nearby where in coincidentally finds a "well regarded" FEDERAL DRUG AGENT who had recently been promoted to number 2 in Atlanta at work building his new home. He kills the agent and steals his truck, badge and gun (3rd gun). Nichols then drives the truck to a local residential complex where he parks in the building's parking lot and waits for a woman (he would later call her an angel and his sister) to exit, drive away and then return, conveniently in time to be kidnapped and held hostage. They both spend the night in her appartment reading the Bible (Matthew, the Tollgater-Tax Collector) and Chapter 33 of a book called A Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, as well as just "talking" about the Evangelical JESUS, and also about her personal circumstance as a "single-mother-widow" of a murdered husband who had died in her arms 5 years before, until the mid morning hours when she is allowed to leave and call 911. Brian Nichols, a Catholic (later Evangelical), once surrounded, gave himself up without a fight. The woman, ASHLEY SMITH, a newly born again Mormon (Saint-Istan-Natsi) appears on TV later to describe her side of "THE MIRACLE". The ancient manuscripts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls have been called by scholars "the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times." They include books of the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible) and nonbiblical texts dating from 100 bc to ad 68. They are not original manuscripts but copies made by scribes. They are a thousand years older than the oldest known Masoretic (traditional Hebrew) text of the Torah, which is the basis of the English translation of the Old Testament. The first scrolls were found in 1947 in a cave on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, in Jordan. They were reportedly found by a Bedouin shepherd whose account of the details of the discovery varied in later years. One version was that a runaway goat jumped into the cave. The shepherd threw in a stone and heard the sound of breaking pottery. He called another boy, and the two crawled into the cave. They saw several large pottery jars, most of them broken. Protruding from the necks of the jars were scrolls of leather wrapped in linen cloth. Although they were badly decomposed, it was possible to see that they were inscribed in a strange writing. There were seven scrolls. Either the boys themselves or older members of their tribe sold the seven scrolls to two Bethlehem dealers in antiquities. Three scrolls were bought for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem by Eliezer L. Sukenik, a professor of archaeology. The other four were sold to the head (metropolitan) of the Syrian Orthodox Christian church, at the Monastery of St. Mark in the Arab quarter of Jerusalem. The metropolitan took his scrolls to the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem for examination. Satisfied that they were genuine, the American School photographed them and announced the discovery to the world in April 1948. The metropolitan then took his scrolls to the United States. In 1954 Professor Yigael Yadin, son of Sukenik, was lecturing in the United States on the three scrolls acquired by his father for the Hebrew University. By chance he learned that the metropolitan was advertising the other four scrolls for sale in a New York newspaper. He purchased them for 250,000 dollars for the government of Israel. Enemies called the Kittim are described as plundering and slaying. The scroll of the Thanksgiving Hymns is a collection of songs similar to the Psalms. The Book of Lamech was so fragile that seven years went by before it could be unrolled. It was assumed to be the lost Apocryphal Book of Lamech, but it proved to be a document in Aramaic relating to the Book of Genesis. It is now called the Scroll of the Apocryphal Genesis. It describes the journeys of Abraham (2000 BC). Of the later discoveries, one of the most interesting was a copper scroll found in 1952. It was broken in two pieces and was too brittle to unroll. The Jordan government sent it to the Manchester College of Technology in England. Professor H.W. Wright-Baker devised a way of mounting the pieces on a spindle and cutting them into paper-thin strips through which the letters could be read. The scroll contains a long list of hiding places of treasures of enormous value. They were hidden in wells, in tombs, and near certain trees and springs. Some scholars believe the list to be imaginary or symbolic of Atlantis. Some think it may be a catalog of the treasures of King Solomon's Temple, others that it lists actual treasures of the Essenes. An eighth scroll, the longest and most complete of the Dead Sea Scrolls, was "acquired" by the Israeli government during the Six-Day War in 1967. Called the Temple Scroll, it was probably found in the late 1950s. Yadin, who published a translation of the 27-foot (8-meter) scroll in 1977, dated it between the 2nd century bc and AD 70. The document establishes clear links between early Christian doctrines and the religious teachings of the Essenes. Near the caves is a ruined building in an area long known to the Arabs as Khirbat Qumran. Archaeologists began excavating the ruins in 1951 in the hope of finding some link between the building and the scrolls. They discovered what is believed by some to be the community center of the Essenes who made the scrolls. Other scholars hold that the ruins are the remains of a military fortress and the scrolls are a treasury of Hebrew writings sent out of Jerusalem for safekeeping--to be hidden in the caves away from the 1st-century Roman invaders. From the evidence of silver coins, pottery shards, and other materials, the archaeologists believe that the building was erected no later than the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 BC). It was destroyed by an earthquake in 31 BC. It was probably restored in the time of Herod's son Herod Archelaus (ruled 4 BC-AD 6) by the same community that occupied it before. In the war that followed the Hebrew revolt against the Romans, the people who lived in the community center at Khirbat Qumran were driven away or exterminated in ad 68. Before the Romans arrived, however, the Essenes hid their library in jars in the surrounding caves. All evidence indicates that the scrolls were copied during the 1st or 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD. The Dead Sea Scrolls were written during one of the most decisive periods in the history of the Hebrew people, on the eve of the birth of Christianity. The tens of thousands of scroll fragments represent a great amount of new material for the study of biblical texts and the people who wrote them as well as of Hebrew history after the 4th century BC. There was a long-standing controversy over the fact that access to the scrolls was limited to a small number of scholars. This was resolved to some degree in the early 1990s when copies of the scrolls were finally published.
