Muses: Nine goddesses of CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY who reportedly presided over learning and the arts. They were especially associated with POETRY. Ancient Greek or Roman writers would often begin their poems by asking for the aid of the Muses in their composition. Writers and artists to this day speak of their "muse," meaning their source of inspiration.

Since ancient times all writers, but most especially poets, have invoked the appropriate muse for aid: Calliope for epic and heroic poetry; Clio for history; Erato for love poetry; Euterpe for music and lyric poetry; Melpomene for tragedy; Polyhymnia for songs or hymns to the gods; Terpsichore for dance; Thalia for comedy; and Urania for astronomy. The muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, or Memory; their leader was Apollo. Sometimes called the Pierides, after their early home, Pieria, in Macedonia, they frequented the fountain of Aganippe on Mount Helicon.

In Greek mythology the Graces (Charites) were beautiful sister goddesses, most often represented as three races in number. Their names are synonymous with their attributes: Aglaia (Asian "brilliance"), Euphrosyne (Caucasian "joy"), and Thalia (Semite "bloom"). Their charm and winning manner made them welcome as the companions of the Roma muses and the attendants of Aphrodite, Eros, and Dionysus. They presided over banquets, social gatherings, and polite entertainments. Their gentleness and agreeable dispositions enhanced the joys of life.

I have a broad interest in computer security and a particular interest in cryptography, having co-invented public key cryptography (for which I received the ACM Kanellakis Award, the IEEE Kobayashi Award, and the 2000 RSA Award in Mathematics). I also invented Merkle trees. A C program that implements a digital signature using Merkle trees is available. See Handbook of Applied Cryptography for an excellent technical treatment of cryptographic methods, and Crypto for a great read about the people involved.

I'm also interested in molecular manufacturing (also called nanotechnology or molecular nanotechnology). The central objective of molecular manufacturing is the design, modeling, and manufacture of systems that can inexpensively fabricate most products that can be specified in molecular detail. This would include, for example, molecular logic elements connected in complex patterns to form molecular computers, molecular robotic arms or Stewart platforms (e.g., positional devices) able to position individual atoms or clusters of atoms under programmatic control (useful if we wish to make molecular computers and other molecular manufacturing systems), and a wide range of other molecular devices. A central concept for achieving low cost in molecular manufacturing is that of massive parallelism, either by self replicating manufacturing systems or convergent assembly. Such systems are today theoretical, but should revolutionize 21st century manufacturing. The marginal manufacturing costs for such systems should be quite small, although initial R&D costs might be quite significant. I served for several years as an executive editor of the journal Nanotechnology. I chaired both the Fourth and Fifth Foresight Conferences on Molecular Nanotechnology; and won the 1998 Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology for theory. I'm a member of ACM, ACS, APS, and IEEE.

The search for life in our solar system reached its highest point to date with the successful landing of spacecraft on Mars. Aboard were experiments designed to look for the biological processes of metabolism, photosynthesis, and respiration. In one metabolism, or labeled-release, experiment, a Martian soil sample was covered with a nutrient containing radioactive carbon-14, on the assumption that any organisms in the soil would ingest the nutrient and give off carbon-14 gas. Astonishingly, large amounts of this gas were indeed detected.

Another SETI search, privately funded by the Planetary Society and known as the Megachannel ExtraTerrestrial Assay (META), ran from 1985 to 1994. It used a Harvard/Smithsonian Cassegrain radio telescope near Harvard University to scan the entire northern sky two times every year for possible incoming signals. This program was followed in 1995 by the Billion-channel ExtraTerrestrial Assay (BETA) search program, which is ongoing. In 1999 the search for extraterrestrial life gained an academic site with the endowment of the world's first SETI chair at the University of California at Berkeley.

ROCKCLIFFE PARC (BRITISH ROC "er" FELLOWS and WIVES) AT THE CORE OF OTTAWA'S K2 "BISEXUAL SURROGATE" ASIAN NATSI CRAP

This overpriced residential district and urban park is located about a kilometer from the Rideau Falls on The Ottawa River, and today is part of Ottawa, Canada's "Phase One" National Capital. It along with the Town of Kemptville about an hour to the southwest, together, form the boundaries of the two infamous hollow doors leading to a third and more important door, the Oxford Mills trap door, at Jig Street and County Rd. 18. (see the Tudors)

ROCKCLIFFE PARC opened May 3, 1894, a year after the tram lines were extended between New Edinburgh and Rockcliffe. This trolley park was developed by The Ottawa Electric Railway whom had completed the double tracking of the line only a few weeks earlier. The park would ensure extra business for the line during off-hours. In addition, a horse-powered ferry across the Ottawa River garnered patrons from the French speaking Province of Quebec, Hull-Aylmer-Gatineau (Gate-in-Water) area.

They had an attraction called "Persian Nights" (a.k.a. Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves), which was a recurring, themed event, and a carousel. This carousel is claimed to be the first electrically-powered unit in the world.

Business was good enough that in November of 1900, the Rockcliffe streetcar barn was opened. It would burn on June 23, 1927, but be rebuilt. This building too, would burn on September 18, 1932 with a loss of seven cars and other equipment. It's unclear if it was again rebuilt, but what was there was torn down in 1946.

The region survives today as a day-use picnic park. It was open in winter for cross-country skiing.

Michael Cowpland (born April 23, 1943) is a Canadian entrepreneur, businessman, and the founder and one-time president, chairman and CEO of Corel, a Canadian software company.

Cowpland was born in Bexhill, Sussex, England and obtained a BSc. in engineering from Imperial College London before moving to Canada in 1964. He completed his masters (1968) and Ph.D. (1973) at Carleton University, Ottawa.

He worked for Bell Northern Research (later part of Nortel Networks) and then MicroSystems International. In 1973, Cowpland and Terry Matthews (see below) founded Mitel Networks, a company that developed and sold electronic PBX systems. Initial success made both founders millionaires. Sales peaked at $250 million but over-expansion and development problems saw the company bought by British Telecom (see MI6). Both Cowpland and Matthews left the company in 1984 amid disagreements with the owners.

Matthews went on to found Newbridge Networks while Cowpland launched Cowpland Research Laboratory (soon Corel) in Ottawa in 1985. At first the company sold DTP workstations, but success did not arrive until the launch of the graphics software, CorelDraw in 1989. In 1996 he offered a challenge to Microsoft with a move into productivity software, acquiring WordPerfect from Novell for $158 million. The company also made unsuccessful forays into CAD, videoconferencing, Java, Linux and other developments. Cowpland survived an investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission in 1999-2000 into allegations that he had used insider information to sell $20 million in Corel shares at $8/share shortly before the company posted disappointing results. Subsequently by November 1999 Corel shares hit a peak of $60/share during the height of the Linux boom when Corel's version of Desktop Linux was seen to be a potential rival to Microsoft Windows.

With the company in a spiral of falling sales, Cowpland left Corel in August 2000. He currently heads Zim Technologies International, a wireless technology company he bought in 2001.

In 1992 he married his second wife, Marlen Cowpland. He and his trophy now live a famously lavish lifestyle in a 20,000 ft² house in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa.

On the other hand....

Sir Terry Matthews is a Canadian serial high tech entrepreneur, originally from Wales. He has founded several dozen companies in the high tech communications field. His most notable successes were with Newbridge Networks and Mitel. Newbridge manufactured data communications products especially ATM devices and routers. It was acquired for seven billion dollars by Alcatel. Mitel specializes in voice systems, and formerly in semiconductors.

Mitel was his first enterprise in Canada. It started out in collaboration with fellow British émigré Michael Cowpland (see above) reportedly as a way to raise seed money for the future enterprises they were dreaming of. Again, reportedly, that is if you believe in coincidence rather than conspiracy, the name Mitel was a contraction of "Mike and Terry's Lawnmowers". Stories differ about the lawnmowers but one is that they planned to import and sell in Canada small electric lawnmowers built in the United Kingdom . This first endeavour was a fiasco since most Canadian lawns have a thick grass which is unsuitable for the kind of lawnmowers made in the United Kingdom. Another version, which the press reported Matthews as recounting at conference in 2005, is that their first shipment of Russian-made electric cordless lawnmowers failed to arrive after having been lost by the railway in shipping.

The two persisted and "obtained funding elsewhere" and they developed a telephony DTMF tone receiver reportedly based on Cowpland's Ph.D. thesis. This was major advance since they were able to sell receivers at a fraction of the cost of competeing versions while still maintaining margins of 1000%. Later they realized that the then new technology of microprocessors, and other semiconductor devices would make a similar change in the market for small PBXs and so introduced the SX200 to immense success. Mitel became one of the more successful manufacturers of small PBX systems and telecom semiconductors in the world.

In 1985, Matthews lost his stake in Mitel but went on to even greater success by founding Newbridge Networks. In 1999, Newbridge was acquired by Alcatel. Matthews' personal stake in Newbridge was valued at over a billion dollars. With this transaction, he became the largest single shareholder in Alcatel.

In an ironic turn, he reacquired the Mitel PBX business and company name in 2000 . He has invested heavily ($500 million by 2005) in Mitel to turn it into a broadband communications company. To this end the company has made signficant investments in enterprise Voice over IP (16) telephony technology.

On April 27, 2005, March Networks, another Matthews start-ups, went IPO. This venture was the first successful high tech IPO in the Ottawa area since 1999. Other ventures that have gone public are Ubiquity (a manufacturer of SIP Application Servers) and Newport Networks (a manufacturer of SIP Session Border Controllers).

A native of Wales, Matthews emigrated to Canada as a young man, but still takes an interest in his home country. One of his most recent ventures is the Celtic Manor Resort, a leisure complex in Newport, Monmouthshire. The original Celtic Manor Hotel at its heart was formerly a maternity home and was Matthews' birthplace. As a billionaire, he is considered to be one of the richest people in both the UK and Canada. Not surprisingly, for his multiple contribution to the development of BAS' infrastructure in PHASE ONE Ottawa he was awarded the OBE in 1994, and was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, 2001.

Jozef Straus, the beret-wearing chief executive officer and co-chairman of optical networking company JDS Uniphase is retiring from the company he helped create.

Straus has been with the company for 20 years since he launched JDS Fitel in 1981, which eventually became part of JDS Uniphase. He was named CEO in 2000.

He came into court early this morning wearing his dark blue dress covered up with his overcoat, kicking and screaming "Down with BUSH". Without looking at the TV screen, I thought for sure that it was Wolf Blitzer in the CNN Situation Room. I was even more convinced later, when I mistook Saddam's brother, who they said was sitting on the floor in his long-johns pouting for more airtime, for Jack Cafferty.

Then, when I heard the judge tell them both to "shut up" I woke up startled, thinking that I had dreamt the whole thing up.

I turned around in bed and looked over at the TV screen. I instinctively knew better than to believe my ears alone, without also seeing what I was hearing with my own eyes. Afterall, no Skull and Bones judge in the USA would ever have the courage to point a finger at CNN's Trojan Talking Heads and tell them to shut up; that their reporting was causing more American troops to be killed in Iraq than ever had the fabricated reported shortage of body armor.

So, it wasn't really Saddam applying for a job at CNN afterall, just the same old Saddam doing what Saddams always do; trying to forcebly manipulate public opinion. He is just the same old same old face of treason we've known forever. Wolf and Jack on the other hand, they are the two left hands of darkness, symbolic of the new two-faced faces of Media treason. 

More things change, the more it all looks the same in the end. Born in New York, reared in the yellow Asian submarine's "garden of good and evil" that is Ted Turner's Georgia.

The vast potential of Canada's oil industry has long been evident. However, most of the oil is trapped in the "tar sands" of northern Alberta. Extraction was for decades considered uneconomical due to the high costs associated with stripping oil from dense sand and shale. As long as more accessible sources of oil existed (e.g., in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela), international firms were unwilling to undertake the investments necessary. Consequently, oil trapped in the tar sands was not counted in official reserve estimates.

However, increased international oil prices, combined with advances in extractive technologies, now make it economically viable to accelerate removal of the oil.

Canada's elevated position in international oil markets could have significant economic and foreign policy benefits. China has included Canada in its global search for stable and secure sources of oil to fuel its rapidly expanding economy. Beijing's growing interest in Alberta's tar sands provides Ottawa with an opportunity to strengthen its political and economic relationship with Asia's rising superpower.

Aside from the trade benefits, Canada's oil sector is also attracting new investment. Through the late 1990s, total investment was just over (U.S.) $6.3 million. However, over the last two years, investment has climbed to almost $30 million.

Canada stands to benefit considerably from its reserves in terms of trade, investment and its strategic position in Asia. However, key challenges remain, not least the difficulties of extracting oil from the tar sands. Yet, already, a pipeline is being planned to facilitate the export of tar sands oil to China.
