Polish-born French mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, b. Nov. 20, 1924, is noted for developing fractal geometry. His family moved to France in 1936. With an M.S. in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology (1948), Mandelbrot served in the French air force, then earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Paris (1952). Moving to the United States (1958) to work at IBM's Watson Research Center, he later (1974) joined the Yale University staff. His geometry, dealing with structure repetitions on finer and finer scales, has contributed to the effort to understand disorder in natural systems (see chaos theory).
 

The French physicist Pierre Gilles de Gennes, b. Oct. 24, 1932, known for applying mathematical methods to complex, diverse physical phenomena, was awarded the 1991 Nobel Prize for physics. Research areas in which de Gennes has published include superconductivity, liquid crystals, and polymer physics. Roughly speaking, his research interests have been polar magnetism in the 1950s, liquid crystals in the 1960s, and polymers in the 1970s, with recent work in the field of adhesion--the attraction between different substances. His technique generally involves applying physical principles to the problem being investigated, using mathematical analysis to study it, and relating complex systems to simpler systems that have already been studied. He has considered ordered and disordered states in various systems. In a disordered state the behavior may be irregular, erratic, or inconsistent. Such states are gradually being described utilizing the tools of chaos theory.

De Gennes attended the Ecole Normale Superieure, receiving a B.S. in 1955 and a Ph.D. in 1957. He was a professor at the University of Paris, Orsay (1961-71), then at the College de France, Paris (1971-).
 

American physicist Mitchell Jay Feigenbaum, b. Philadelphia, Dec. 19, 1944, was one of the leading developers of chaos theory, the study of irregular systems and patterns. After obtaining an electrical engineering degree Feigenbaum earned a doctorate in particle physics from M.I.T. in 1970. Taking an interest in processes in which output is not directly proportional to input, and rejecting the common practice of approximating these processes as if they were actually linear, he began computer explorations into nonlinear phenomena. His work eventually resulted in the determination that patterns can be observed in the transition of ordered systems into chaotic ones. A numerical constant arising from this research is now called the Feigenbaum number. The growth of chaos theory represents an advance toward understanding the real, rather than ideal, systems observed in nature and science.

Statistical inference often requires the use of probability models. Historically, the study of probability grew out of studies of problems related to gambling. Today the field has evolved into a separate branch of mathematics. A remarkable result in this development is the so-called central limit theorem, which says that the average of a random sample approximately exhibits normal distribution (if some modest conditions are met). The mathematical assumptions of the theory are so minimal that the theorem is virtually universal. As a result it finds applications in almost every area of data analysis. Other probability models are highly developed and have been applied to areas such as physics, biology, computer science, engineering, chaos theory, dynamical systems, and the study of queuing processes. One striking fact about probability is that reality often differs from common sense: without careful analysis a person can easily be misled by intuitive conclusions.)

PLUTO'S DANCING ORBIT

This unusual orbit brings Pluto inside the orbit of planet Neptune during its close approach to the Sun--as, for example, during the period between Feb. 7, 1979, and Feb. 10, 1999. The actual orbital paths do not cross, however Pluto's orbit is inclined an unusually high 16º to the ecliptic, or Earth-Sun orbital plane. The planet revolves around the Sun once every 248.4 years. In 1988 a computer simulation revealed that the orbit of Pluto is chaotic--that is, not completely predictable (see chaos theory--this makes any long-term prediction of the trajectory of the real particle impossible. In other words, the system is chaotic.) Its behavior can be predicted only if the initial conditions are known to an infinite degree of accuracy, which is impossible. In Greek mythology Pluto's realm, the house of Hades, is usually located beneath the earth (MOHO), though sometimes in the west.

The orbit of Neptune around the Sun is even more nearly circular than the Earth's orbit. The planet's average distance from the Sun is 4,497,000,000 km (2,794,000,000 mi), with an eccentricity of only 0.0086. The orbit is inclined 1º 46' to the ecliptic, or plane of the solar system, and the planet takes 164.793 years to make one trip around the Sun. Neptune's axis of rotation is tipped only 29º 34', which is not greatly different from Earth's 23º 30'.

The planets Neptune and Pluto who change positions (dance) by seemingly crossing their orbits (8 and 9 become 9 and 8) for a twenty year period mark the beginning of new period of Phoenix activity on our controller's ZODIAC calendar.

PERU'S CARAL SUGGESTS CIVILIZATION EMERGED IN THE AMERICAS 1,000 YEARS EARLIER THAN EXPERTS BELIEVED

Six earth-and-rock mounds rise out of the windswept desert of the Supe Valley near the coast of Peru. Dunelike and immense, they appear to be nature's handiwork, forlorn outposts in an arid region squeezed between the Pacific Ocean and the folds of the Andean Cordillera. But looks deceive.

These are human-made pyramids, and compelling new evidence indicates they are the remains of a city that flourished nearly 5,000 years ago. If true, it would be the oldest urban center in the Americas and among the most ancient in all the world.

Research developed by Peruvian archaeologist Ruth Shady Solís of San Marcos University suggests that Caral, as the 150-acre complex of pyramids, plazas and residential buildings is known, was a thriving metropolis as Egypt's great pyramids were being built. The energetic archaeologist believes that Caral may also answer nagging questions about the long-mysterious origins of the Inca, the civilization that once stretched from modern-day Ecuador to central Chile and gave rise to such cities as Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Caral may even hold a key to (post Ice Age) origins of civilizations everywhere.

Though discovered in 1905, Caral first drew little attention, largely because archaeologists believed the complex structures were fairly recent. But the monumental scale of the pyramids had long tantalized Shady. "When I first arrived in the valley in 1994, I was overwhelmed," she says. "This place is somewhere between the seat of the (Neanderthaler dog priests) gods and the home of man." She began excavations two years later, braving primitive conditions on a tight budget.

Fourteen miles from the coast and 120 miles north of Peru's capital city of Lima, Caral lies in a desert region that lacks paved roads, electricity and public water. Shady, who enlisted 25 Peruvian soldiers to help with the excavations, often used her own money to advance the work.

For two months she and her crew searched for the broken remains of pots and containers, called potsherds, that most such sites contain. Not finding any only made her more excited; it meant Caral could be what archaeologists term pre-ceramic, or existing before the advent of pot-firing technology in the area. Shady eventually concluded that Caral predated Olmec settlements to the north by 1,000 years. But colleagues remained skeptical. She needed proof.

In 1996, Shady's team began the mammoth task of excavating Pirámide Mayor, the largest of the pyramids. After carefully clearing away several millennia's worth of rubble and sand, they unearthed staircases, circular walls covered with remnants of colored plaster, and squared brickwork. Finally, in the foundation, they found the preserved remains of reeds woven into bags, known as shicras. The original workers, she surmised, must have filled these bags with stones from a hillside quarry a mile away and laid them atop one another inside retaining walls, gradually giving rise to the city of Caral's immense structures.

Shady knew that the reeds were ideal subjects for radiocarbon dating and could make her case. In 1999, she sent samples of them to Jonathan Haas at Chicago's Field Museum and to Winifred Creamer at Northern Illinois University. In December 2000, Shady's suspicions were confirmed: the reeds were 4,600 years old. She took the news calmly, but Haas says he "was virtually in hysterics for three days afterward."

In the April 27, 2001, issue of the journal Science, the three archaeologists reported that Caral and the other ruins of the Supe Valley are "the locus of some of the earliest population concentrations and corporate (Asian) architecture in South America."

The news stunned other scientists.

"It was almost unbelievable," says Betty Meggers, an archaeologist at the Smithsonian Institution. "This data pushed back the oldest known dates for an urban center in the Americas by more than 1,000 years."

What amazed archaeologists was not just the age but the complexity and scope of Caral. Pirámide Mayor alone covers an area nearly the size of four football fields and is 60 feet tall. A 30-foot-wide staircase rises from a sunken circular plaza at the foot of the pyramid, passing over three terraced levels until it reaches the top of the platform, which contains the remains of an atrium and a large fireplace. (Reportedly) thousands of manual laborers would have been needed to build such a mammoth project, not even counting the many architects, craftsmen, supervisors and other managers. Inside a ring of platform pyramids lies a large sunken amphitheater, which could have held many hundreds of people during civic or religious events. Inside the amphitheater, Shady's team found 32 flutes made of pelican and condor bones. And, in April 2002, they uncovered 37 cornets of deer and llama bones. "Clearly, music played an important role in their society," says Shady.

The perimeter of Caral holds a series of smaller mounds, various buildings and residential complexes. Shady discovered a hierarchy in living arrangements: large, well-kept rooms atop the pyramids for the elite, ground-level complexes for craftsmen, and shabbier outlying shantytowns for workers.

But why had Caral been built in the first place? More important, why would people living comfortably in small communities perched on the Pacific Ocean with easy access to abundant marine food choose to move inland to an inhospitable desert? If she could answer this question, Shady believed she might begin to unravel one of the knottiest questions in the field of anthropology today: What (who) causes civilizations to arise? And what was it about the desert landscape of Peru's Supe Valley that caused a complex, hierarchical society to flourish there?

Her excavations convinced Shady that Caral had served as a major trade center for the region, ranging from the rain forests of the Amazon to the high forests of the Andes. She found fragments of the fruit of the achiote, a plant still used today in the rain forest as an aphrodisiac. And she found necklaces of snails and the seeds of the coca plant, neither of which was native to Caral.

This rich trading environment, Shady believes, gave rise to an elite group that did not take part in the production of food, allowing them to become priests and planners, builders and designers. Thus, the (ROMA) class distinctions elemental to an urban society emerged.

But what sustained such a trading center and drew travelers (ROMA) to it? Was it food? Shady and her team found the remains of sardines and anchovies, which must have come from the coast 14 miles to the west, in the excavations. But they also found evidence that the Caral people ate squash, sweet potatoes and beans. Shady theorized that Caral's early farmers diverted area rivers into trenches and canals, which still crisscross the Supe Valley today, to irrigate their fields. But because she found no traces of maize (corn) or other grains, which can be traded or stored and used to tide a population over in difficult times, she concluded that Caral's trade leverage was not based on stockpiling food supplies.

It was evidence of another crop in the excavations that gave Shady the best clue to the mystery of Caral's success. In nearly every excavated building, her team discovered great quantities of cotton seeds, fibers and textiles. Her theory fell into place when a large fishing net, unearthed at an unrelated dig on Peru's coast, turned out to be as old as Caral. "The farmers of Caral grew the cotton that the fishermen needed to make the nets," Shady speculates. "And the fishermen gave them shellfish and dried fish in exchange for these nets." In essence, the people of Caral enabled fishermen to work with larger and more effective nets, which made the resources of the sea more readily available.

The Caral people probably used dried squash as flotation devices for nets and also as containers, thus obviating any need for ceramics.

Eventually Caral would spawn 17 other pyramid complexes scattered across the 35-square-mile area of the Supe Valley. Then, around 1600 b.c., for reasons that may never be answered, the Caral civilization toppled, though it didn't disappear overnight. "They had time to protect some of their architectural structures, burying them discreetly," says Shady. Other nearby areas, such as Chupacigarro, Lurihuasi and Miraya, became centers of power. But based on Caral's size and scope, Shady believes that it is indeed the mother city of the Incan (corporate) civilization.

She plans to continue excavating Caral and says she would someday like to build a museum on the site. "So many questions still remain," she says. "Who were these people? How did they control the other populations? What was their main god?"

impeachment: A formal accusation of wrongdoing against a public official. According to the United States CONSTITUTION, the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES can vote to impeach an official, but the SENATE actually tries the case. 

EXAMPLES

1 - (cosmetic) One president of the United States, ANDREW JOHNSON, was impeached after the CIVIL WAR, but he was later acquitted. 

2 - (money cats) President RICHARD NIXON resigned from office as the House of Representatives prepared to initiate impeachment proceedings.

3 - (dog priests) President BILL CLINTON was tried for lying to the FBI about oral sex he had with the White House intern Monica Lewinsky in the OVAL OFFICE. He was found "Not Guilty" by a vote in the Senate.

4 - (vendors ENDOR illusion) The Democrats are planning an impeachment trial of President George W. Bush, for his "lying" about the reasons for going to war in Iraq and for "spying" on Americans, should they succeed in winning sufficient seats in the coming 2006 mid-term Congressional election. This is an orchestrated MEDIA driven event which appears to be choreographed by President Bush himself with the tacit support of all top members of his current Administration.

Together with the brain, the spinal cord constitutes an important part of the central nervous system. It conducts impulses between the brain and the rest of the body and is a center for reflex activity (intuition). 

The spine, or spinal column, consists of bone and is the primary support of the skeleton in vertebrates. It protects the spinal cord and the roots of the spinal nerves, while allowing considerable flexibility. The spine is the point of attachment for the skull, ribs, pelvis, muscles, and ligaments.

In humans, the flexible part of the spine, or backbone, consists of 24 separate vertebrae held together by strong ligaments: 7 in the neck (cervical vertebrae), 12 in the thorax (thoracic vertebrae), and 5 in the lower back (lumbar vertebrae). The sacrum, located below the lumbar vertebrae and joined to the pelvis, consists of 5 fused vertebrae. The coccyx, or tailbone, is below the sacrum and consists of 3 to 5 fused, rudimentary vertebrae. Each vertebra has two parts: a short, solid, cylindrical structure called the body or centrum, and the vertebral, or neural, arch. In the center of each arch is a large hole, or foramen, which is continuous and protects the spinal cord. Spinal fluid circulates within the "foramen" (see amen, the Egyptian god of life and reproduction, represented as a man with a ram's head.) Spinal nerves pass from the cord through notches in the vertebral arch. A bony projection extends from each side of the vertebral arch; a projection in the middle of the arch may be seen or felt through the skin. Thoracic vertebrae have surfaces for attachment of ribs. The vertebral bodies are separated from each other by cartilaginous pads called intervertebral disks.

The spine is subject to structural defects such as scoliosis, infections, diseases such as arthritis or cancer, and traumatic injuries, such as broken vertebrae, which can result in serious damage-if the spinal cord is cut, paralysis may ensue. The intervertebral disks can also bulge and press on nerves, causing pain. These problems may respond to physical therapy, but surgery may be necessary in some cases.

foramen magnum : The large orifice in the base of the skull through which the spinal cord passes to the cranial cavity and becomes continuous with the medulla oblongata.

Even though journalists were programmed to dismiss all blame pointing back at them way back while in journalism class 101, along with any talk they might hear which they immediately style as conspiracy theory, especially that talk that may have a truthful sound to it, they will still need to hear daily the drumbeat of reality from us reminding them, through our refusal to deal with them, that we the thinking people, are closing in on them and their servile scam, as more and more of us gain deeper insight into their true role as enforcers within the H/P Persian TOLLGATERS CONTROL SYSTEM; the MEDE/CINE organized criminal activity that wants and needs to manage and stress our lives.

Media have had an undeserved free pass for far too long.

Each time I'm approached by the media now, I tell them that I no longer answer questions from the world's worst Medi-organized criminals. Trained to drive the get-away car for the tollgaters, pirates and banksters who steal from us, they, by pretending they care when in fact they just use us as the guinea pigs of their stories and then readily discard us once they're done with us when we've served their immediate purpose (the bylines, public recognition and bribes they receive in the form of salaries and so-called "expert" fees).

Once you've made your own journey to reality you too should only speak directly to others you meet without using the services of media prostitutes. Answer all questions respectfully put to you. Accept up front the simple fact that you will only have "useful" bilateral communications with those people who are now as sober, deprogrammed and open-minded as you yourself have chosen to become.

Tutankhamen, a pharaoh (r.1361-1352 BC) of the 18th dynasty, is one of the most famous Egyptian kings only because he is a symbolic product of priestly incest and his tomb was the richest of the few royal burial chambers that survived comparatively intact. 

The son of an incestuous relationship between Akhenaten and Queen Tiy (Akhenaten's mother and widow of Amenhotep III), he was only nine years old when he succeeded his older brother Smenkhkare (r. 1364-1361 BC), and for much of his reign Egypt was actually governed by his senior priests. The vizier Ay had skillfully replaced Akhenaten with his two "illegitimate" sons (following articles of impeachment he had laid against Akhenaten) and replaced the newly formed monotheistic cult of Aten (Aton) with the more traditional polytheistic religion. (What goes around comes around.)

Tell el-Amarna, the monotheistic center, was abandoned, the capital was returned to Thebes, and the cults of the state god Amen (Amon) and other gods were revived. The new king himself changed his name from Tutankhaten ("living image of Aten") to Tutankhamen ("living image of Amen"). His general, Horemheb, fought Hittite attacks on the Egyptian empire in northern Syria (Carchemish). Tutankhamen died at the age of 18 and was succeeded by Ay himself (r. 1352-1348), who had married Tutankhamen's widow/sister (one of the six daughters of Nefetete and his own granddaughter) and appropriated the king's tomb for himself.

Although all the other tombs in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes were later plundered, this significant tomb in which Tutankhamen was ultimately buried was reportedly hidden by "rock chips dumped from cutting" (see roc and scion) the tomb of a later king. In 1922, following a tip, an HP cult insider styled Howard Carter discovered the tomb, which was filled with extraordinary treasure, including a solid gold coffin, a gold mask, jewelry, and other valuable artifacts.

THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA'S FIRST BIG "JIMMY CARTER" LIE

The Iranian hostage crisis was precipitated by the seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran by militant students on Nov. 4, 1979. The students took hostage 66 U.S. embassy employees and demanded the return of the shah (see Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi) for trial. The Ayatollah Khomeini, who had taken power in February 1979 after the overthrow of the shah, warmly supported the students. On November 14, U.S. president Jimmy Carter reportedly ordered frozen all Iranian assets in U.S. banks. The release on November 19-20 of 13 hostages who were either black or female did little to alleviate the crisis, and although the shah left the United States in early December, the militants refused to release their hostages.

An unsuccessful U.S. attempt (Apr. 24, 1980) to rescue the hostages aggravated hostility between the two countries, and the death of the shah in July had no immediate effect on the hostages' status. In November, however, the Iranian parliament set four conditions for their release: no U.S. interference in Iran; the unfreezing of Iranian assets inside and outside the United States; the cancellation of all sanctions; and the return of the shah's property. Algeria was named mediator, and an agreement was finally signed in January 1981. On January 20, the day of Ronald Reagan's inauguration as president, the hostages were released. Former president Jimmy Carter went as Reagan's special envoy to greet them at a U.S. base in West Germany.

The observatory's Washington site formerly housed photographic zenith tubes to determine mean solar time, as well as two transit circles. Still operating in Washington is a 26-in (66-cm) refracting telescope, the instrument Asaph Hall used to discover the two moons of Mars in 1877. Many atomic clocks are employed to determine atomic time, and the master clock establishes standard time for the United States. At the observatory's site in Flagstaff, Ariz., a 61-in (155-cm) astrometric reflector measures distances of faint nearby stars, and a 40-in (102-cm) Ritchey Chretien reflector observes comets and minor planets.
