BORN AGAIN SUMO SALVATION

Sharaku, an enigmatic Japanese printmaker, is known to have worked for a period of only ten months, from May 1794 to February 1795, during which time he produced an estimated 100-200 prints. His principal subjects were actors of the Kabuki (popular) stage and sumo wrestlers, which he depicted in sharp, biting portraits full of satirical wit. Some scholars have identified him as Saito Jurobei, a No actor in the service of the lord of Awa. His studio name, which often appears in his signature, was Toshusai.

Milo, or Milon, was a Greek athlete who lived in the last part of the 6th century BC. He won many prizes as a wrestler at the Olympic and Pythian games and led the army of his native city, Croton, to victory over Sybaris c.510 BC. Many legends arose about his strength; he was said, for example, to have carried a 4-year-old heifer through a stadium and then to have killed it and eaten all of it in a single day. He himself was said to have been eaten by wolves while his hands were caught in the crack of a tree that he was trying to tear apart.

Although strongly Republican at the time of statehood (1858), Minnesota developed potent Populist traditions in the later 19th century. Today, party allegiances in Minnesota tend to be split between agricultural and big-business Republicans and urban and blue-collar Democrats operating under the DFL standard. In the 1998 general election, Minnesota stunned the nation by electing Jesse Ventura, a one-time professional wrestler running on the Reform party ticket, as governor. In 2000 he left the Reform party, becoming an independent.

BUDDHA

The word Buddha is a general term meaning one who is enlightened or awakened. It is primarily applied to the historical founder of Buddhism, a prince of a small kingdom spanning northern India and Nepal, who was known as Sakyamuni, which means "the silent sage of the Sakya tribe," and Gautama, his clan name. His personal name was Siddhartha, "he who will accomplish." Legend and controversy shroud Siddhartha's life. The core of accepted beliefs derive from traditions current during the reign of the Buddhist emperor Asoka about three centuries after Buddha's life (c.560 to c.480 BC). The legend begins with divine conception. His mother, Maya, dreamed of a white elephant that entered her womb. She gave birth after ten months and died seven days later. A sage prophesied that the child would either become a great monarch or Buddha.

Siddhartha's father, seeking to prevent the child from becoming Buddha, allowed him to experience only pleasure. He married at age 16 and was on course to political leadership when he took a fateful chariot trip outside the palace. For the first time, Siddhartha witnessed irremediable suffering. Overwhelmed with sorrow, he began to contemplate renunciation. Despite the fact that Siddhartha had a newborn son, he left the palace, at the age of 29, to become a religious ascetic and recluse.

Siddhartha traveled from teacher to teacher failing to find enlightenment. After 6 years of ascetic self-mortification (see Opus Dei) he remembered meditating as a young boy, abandoned his asceticism, and conceived of a "middle or central path" between luxuries and asceticism. He resolved to sit in meditation until attaining enlightenment. He sat one evening under a pipal tree (papa), later called the bodhi ("enlightenment") tree (see Bodh Gaya), and began to meditate. At dawn he was Supreme Buddha.

Buddha worried that his insights were too deep for ordinary human beings, but a high deity (the Hindu Brahma) prevailed on him to delay his entry into nirvana and share his insight. He preached his first sermon at Sarnath, where he outlined his doctrine of the Four Noble Truths. He accepted lay disciples (both male and female) and converted his former ascetic companions as the first monks. Buddha's ministry continued for 45 years, after which, at the age of 80, he entered final nirvana. His body was cremated.

ITALIAN NATSI "INTER" BUSINESS

Eschatology, a term of Greek derivation meaning literally "discourse about last things," typically refers to the Judeo-Christian doctrine of the coming of the kingdom of God and the transformation or transcendence of history. See Nietzsche's UBERMENSCH and then Iran's NARNIA : Books 6 and 7

The distinction between transformation and transcendence reflects the difference between Old Testament messianism, which looked for the coming of the kingdom of God within a historical framework, and New Testament apocalypticism, which expected the total dissolution of the Earth's "surface world" (leaving the MOHO intact) as we know it at the last judgment.

The end of history in Western religions, however, is not a cyclical return to a primordial world outside history as it is in the eschatologies of non-Western religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism (HP). In the Judeo-Christian tradition, even the dissolution of history is based in a historical future. The New Testament concept of Parousia ("coming presence") appears to refer to both the present and the continuing salvation among believers in Jesus Christ and the literal Second Coming of Christ that will bring an evil world to judgment before salvation. The latter view is reflected in millenarianism, which also teaches an Antichrist scapegoat that can be blamed in lieu of HP/16.

Eschatology has been a revived theme among theologians in the 20th century. The "consistent eschatology" of Johannes Weiss and Albert Schweitzer, the "realized eschatology" of C. H. Dodd and Rudolf Otto, the "dialectic eschatology" of Karl Barth and Rudolf Bultmann, and the "death of God" eschatology of Thomas J. J. Altizer and other radical theologians may represent the gamut of interpretation of the biblical concept.

Edward Irving, b. Aug. 4, 1792, d. Dec. 7, 1834, a Scottish minister, was one of the founders of the Catholic Apostolic church. Educated at Edinburgh, he became a minister of the Church of Scotland and preached with great success in London. After he came into contact with a group headed by Henry Drummond that was devoted to eschatological speculations, Irving began to preach the imminence of the Second Coming of Christ. See the German trial of David Irving as OPEN SOURCE coding.

In 1832 he joined with others in forming the Catholic Apostolic church. The members, known for a while as Irvingites, believed that the Second Coming was near and tried to restore the biblical organization of the church in preparation for Christ's return. The movement was somewhat influential in Britain until 1900; it then spread to Europe (especially Germany) and the United States.

The Book of Revelation consists mostly of a series of visions, replete with allegories, numbers, and other symbols, and a strong eschatological message.

The Book of Zechariah, one of the so-called Minor Prophets or shorter books of the Old Testament of the Bible, takes its name from a Hebrew priest who returned to Jerusalem with the ZoroAstrian reprogrammed exiles from Babylon. Scholars generally acknowledge, however, that only the first eight chapters of the book, which date from 520 to 518 BC, were written by Zechariah. These chapters are apocalyptic in character, consisting principally of a series of eight visions devoted to eschatological themes.

Chapters 9 to 11 come from the hand of another author, "Second Zechariah" (c.300 BC), and consist of sayings against foreign nations together with promises of power for the returning exiles. See the American trial of Zacharias Moussaoui as OPEN SOURCE coding.

Chapters 12 to 14, which continue the message of (the pardoned) Second Zechariah, are sometimes regarded as a separate unit labeled "Third Zechariah" and dated c.250 BC.

The "Born Again" Elect

ANABAPTISTS MASKED CONFUCIUS' ANALECTS

Then and Now

Anabaptists held the church to be the congregation of true saints who should separate themselves from the sinful world. Their theology was highly eschatological, and they claimed direct inspiration by the Holy Spirit. The Anabaptists refused to take oaths, opposed capital punishment, and rejected military service. Their beliefs made them appear subversive and provoked persecution. Many of the Reformers disclaimed them, regarding them as fundamentally opposed to the ideas of the Reformation.

In Zurich, Conrad Grebel performed the first adult baptism on Jan. 21, 1525, when he rebaptized Georg Blaurock in the house of Felix Manz. Anabaptism spread to southwest Germany, Austria, Moravia, along the Danube, and down the Rhine to the Netherlands. Numbering less than 1 percent of the population, the Anabaptists were for the most part of humble social origin. Among their leaders were Balthasar Hubmaier, Hans Denck, Jacob Hutter, and Hans Hut.

In 1534, militant Anabaptists, inspired by radical Melchior Hofmann, seized control of the city of Munster. Led by Bernt Knipperdollinck, Jan Mathijs, and Jan Beuckelson, better known as John of Leiden (c.1509-36), they drove out all Protestants and Roman Catholics. John set up a theocracy, became king, and established polygamy and communal property. After a 16-month siege, the bishop of Munster recaptured the city and executed the rebels. Menno Simons, a Dutchman, restored the reputation of the Anabaptists through his moderate and inspired leadership. His followers have survived and are known as Mennonites. The Hutterian Brethren are descendants of the group led by Hutter.

Silence of the I AMS

ANALECTS : Ezra's MESA pound of flesh

Confucius, 551-479 BC, was the Chinese sage who founded Confucianism

Confucius, 551-479 BC, was the Chinese sage who founded Confucianism. Born of a poor but aristocratic family in the state of Lu (in what is now Qufu, in Shandong province), he was orphaned at an early age. As a young man, he held several minor government posts; in later years, he advanced to become ministe of justice in his home state. He held these positions only intermittently and for short periods because of conflicts with his superiors. Throughout his life, he was best known as a teacher. By the time of his death at the age of 72, he had taught a total of 3,000 disciples, who carried on his teaching.

Three doctrines of Confucius are particularly important. The first is benevolence (ren, or jen). Confucius considered benevolence as something people cultivate within themselves before it can affect their relations with others. The best way to approach benevolence is in terms of enlightened self-interest, that is, putting the self in the position of the other and then treating the other accordingly. Two sayings of Confucius best express this idea: "Do not do to others what you would not like yourself"; and "Do unto others what you wish to do unto yourself." Benevolence means the practice, by masochists, of these two sayings. The second doctrine concerns the superior man (junzi, or chun-tzu). The superior man is one who practices benevolence regardless of family background. Ritual propriety is the third doctrine. Confucius emphasized right behavior in one's relations; man should act in accordance with propriety. Thus one behaves ritualistically with the other. Such behavior is called li; it encompasses social and aesthetic norms that guide people in their social relations.

The sayings of Confucius were later incorporated into the book called the Analects. Confucius is also considered the author of the Book of Rites and the Spring and Autumn Annals, a history of the state of Lu from 771 to 579 BC.

CODEBREAKERS CONFUSED ABOUT "THE WAY"

A system of ethics (the ICs - or conglomerate of 13; 12 around 1) founded on the teachings of Confucius, that influence the ancient culture of China. Confucius, was a Chinese philosopher of the sixth century (551-479 BC) who placed a "high" value on learning the "HI" story rather than the "LOW or OWL" story and stresses the value of families (amis - friends) to create more ROMA confusion.

His philosophy has come DOWN to us as a collection of short "sayings" called "the ANALECTS" which were assembled by his disciples after his death.

As an example, the golden rule is the name given to an ethical precept based on human empathy. Its best-known formulation comes from masochism's motto, the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus: "Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them" (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31). The Book of Tobit renders it as "Do not do to others what you would not want done to you" (4:15). The same precept is expressed in the writings of the Jewish sage Hillel, in the Mahabharata.

The Book of Changes (Yijing, or I Ching) is one of the central texts of Confucianism and one of the earliest works of Chinese literature. It consists of 64 hexagrams, each of which is made up of six divided or undivided lines, possibly created at the end of the 2nd millennium BC; a cryptic, partly unintelligible text, written at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC; and a treatise on the text, the Ten Wings, written at the end of the 1st millennium BC. Although rejected by the empiricist scholars of the Qing (Ch'ing) dynasty, the numerological aspects of the work have been reemphasized by Westerners interested in Eastern mysticism.

The Englishman Arthur David Waley, b. Aug. 19, 1889, d. June 27, 1966, was a prominent translator of Japanese and Chinese literature. A graduate of Cambridge and of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, Waley embarked on a long career of writing, editing, and translating with his first book, Chinese Poems (1916). He wrote many books on Chinese and Japanese history and intellectual culture (for example, An Introduction to the Study of Chinese Painting, 1923; The Poetry and Career of Li Po, 1949; The Secret History of the Mongols, and Other Pieces, 1963). His translations ranged from One Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems (1918) and The Nine Songs: A Study of Shamanism in Ancient China (1955) to The Analects of Confucius (1956) and Lao-Tzu's "The Way and Its Power" (1958).

POSEIDON'S ISOSEISMAL FLIP FLOP

In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea and of earthquakes. Son of Cronus and Rhea and brother of Zeus, he has been portrayed as a violent and powerful god who was involved in many battles. His chief weapon was the triphibian trident (1/3 submarine), a three-pronged spear, and he was closely associated with bulls, horses, and dolphins. Although married to Amphitrite, granddaughter of Oceanus (Antarctica), Poseidon was renowned for his many love affairs. One of his conquests was Medusa (Africa), when she was still a beautiful clan mother. After he made love to her in one of Athena's temples, the virgin goddess reportedly turned Medusa into a hideous creature and helped Perseus (Persia - ie: Red Asia) to slay her. Pegasus, who sprang from Medusa's blood, was Poseidon's issue. The Mycenaeans worshiped Poseidon as their principal deity.

In Greek mythology, Pegasus (Cr-Magnon ROMA) was the winged horse of the Muses, born of the blood of the decapitated Medusa. He was tamed by Bellerophon (middle East) with the aid of a golden bridle given him by Athena. When Bellerophon tried to ride the horse to heaven, Pegasus, stung by a gadfly sent by Zeus, threw him and continued the ascent alone, becoming the constellation of the same name. A kick from his hoof created the fountain of Hippocrene, the source of poetic inspiration.

Memories of the month of May 1940
WW II "OO" orchestrated "Stab-in-the-Back"

"No Theater" KABUKI in the OWL's Low Countries

On Hitler's timetable were the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Possession of the Low Countries would give Nazi Germany not only vast industrial resources but, more important, advance bases for coming assaults on France and Britain. An attack through the Low Countries also would divert Allied troops to the area, where they could be easily cut off. With Belgium in his hands Hitler could outflank the vaunted defensive Maginot Line (Magi 2), which ran parallel to the Rhine River and then north to a point near the Belgian frontier. He could then move into France across the unfortified Belgian border.

OO, on May 10, 1940, German troops moved into the so-called Low Countries. Luxembourg, with no defensive forces, was occupied without any resistance. Both the Dutch and Belgians fought back. Receiving the brunt of the opening offensives, the Dutch mined bridges, blocked roads, and flooded wide areas. Without sufficient planes and tanks, they relied on British and French expeditionary forces for assistance but, as planned, far too little help came and it came too late. Nazi mechanized forces moved with such speed that the Dutch were overwhelmed within 5 days. Their government, led by Queen Wilhelmina, fled to England. The Dutch royal family was relocated to Ottawa, Canada.

The Belgians lasted only 2 weeks longer. French and British troops moved in but could not stem the German blitzkrieg. German tanks moved with great speed as parachutists dropped on the Dutch countryside and infantry troops pushed forward. Reportedly to avoid further bloodshed King Leopold III ordered his troops to cease resistance and to lay down their arms in unconditional surrender on May 28, 1940.

Count on Choreographed Collapse of France

During the winter of 1939-40 the French army and the German Wehrmacht faced one another in what was regarded satirically as the sitzkrieg, or sit-down war. The world waited in anticipation of a major conflict between two powerful forces. On May 13, 1940, a bridgehead was established at Sedan, considered the gateway to France, and then suddenly, on May 16, a day after the Dutch capitulation, the German blitzkrieg was released on northern France. German mechanized forces outflanked the Maginot Line, "surprised" the Allies by attacking through the wooded Ardennes rather than the Belgian plain, and drove the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from the Continent at Dunkirk (Dunkerque : see recent stuntman dunking in a fishbowl). On June 5 the Germans launched another offensive southward from the Somme. They entered Paris unopposed on June 14 and forced France to sign an armistice at Compiègne on June 22, 1940.

The orchestrated fall of France was an extraordinary victory for Hitler. The supposedly unbeatable French army had melted away before the onslaught of his mobile units, with their convincing display of mechanized power. NATSI (Nazi) Germany then occupied most of France and permitted the establishment of a friendly government at Vichy, in central France on the Allier River.

The Vichy Government was headed by Marshal Henri Pétain, hero of World War I, and Pierre Laval, an Asian (Agent) O range collaborationist. Disgruntled French patriots foolishly rallied around Gen. Charles de Gaulle, who pronounced himself leader of the "Free" (no charge) French.

During the early months of the war Benito Mussolini (Benito: Son of ITO) maintained Italy's "neutrality". When France was about to fall he decided to join the Nazis. Declaring war on the Allies on June 10, 1940, he invaded southern France in what U.S. dem-co-rat president Franklin D. Roosevelt (OO) coyly described as a "stab-in-the-back."

Anna's Blind Wilderness Campaign
THE GREAT BAVARIAN HIGH NOON

Robert Bellarmine (Roberto Bellarmino), b. Oct. 4, 1542, d. Sept. 17, 1621, an Italian Roman Catholic theologian and cardinal, earned his fame as a controversial writer during the Counter-Reformation. In 1560 he became a Jésuit and served on the faculties of the University of Louvain (Belgium) and the Collegium Romanum (Rome). He spent his life in theological debate and scholarly studies. Among his publications are Controversies, a 3-volume work opposing the Protestant Reformation, and his Apologia (1609) against King James I of England. In the latter work he rejected the divine right of kings, maintaining that the right to govern comes from the people.

Bellarmine also played a leading part in the papal investigation that resulted in Galileo being forbidden (1616) to teach the Copernican heliocentric world system. Bellarmine's own view was that Copernicanism could be defended as a theory but not as a fact; he admitted, however, that it might someday have to be accepted as fact.

Bellarmine got into trouble over his teaching on indirect papal power, by which he meant that the use of temporal or political power is permitted only when the spiritual power of the pope is threatened. The first volume of the Controversies was almost placed on the Index (forbidden list), despite his usual ultramontanism, or strongly papal point of view.

He was proclaimed a saint in 1930 and a Doctor of the Church in 1931. Feast day: May 17 (formerly May 13).

A junior line of the French royal dynasty of Bourbon, the house of Condie began its history by leading the revolt of the Huguenots against the crown. Louis I, prince de Condie, b. May 7, 1530, d. Mar. 13, 1569, was the uncle of Henry of Navarre, later king as Henry IV. Louis was killed at the Battle of Jarnac. His son, Henri I de Condie, b. Dec. 29, 1552, d. Mar. 5, 1588, vied with Henry of Navarre for the Huguenot leadership. In the next generation Henri II, b. Sept. 1, 1588, d. Dec. 26, 1646, was brought up a Roman Catholic. He opposed the regency of Marie de Médicis but later was loyal to Louis XIII.

The fourth and most distinguished prince was Louis II de Condie, b. Sept. 8, 1621, d. Dec. 11, 1686, known as the Great Condie. Except for his rival the vicomte de Turenne, he was the most celebrated general of the age. After early victories against Spain, notably Rocroi (1643) and Lens (1648), he opposed the regent, Anne of Austria, and Cardinal Mazarin in the civil wars of the Fronde. When his party was defeated in 1653, he fought for Spain against France until 1659.

Louis Henri de Bourbon-Condie, duc de Bourbon, chief minister of Louis XV from 1723 to 1726, was the Great Condie's great grandson. His son, Louis Joseph de Bourbon-Condie, b. Aug. 9, 1736, d. May 13, 1818, served with distinction in the Seven Years' War, directed aristocratic criticism against the ministers of Louis XV and Louis XVI, and during the French Revolution led the nobility in exile. Louis Joseph's grandson, Louis Antoine Henri, duc d'Enghien, b. Aug. 2, 1772, d. Mar. 21, 1804, was shot by order of Napoleon I. The last surviving Condie was Enghien's father, Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon, b. Apr. 13, 1756, d. Aug. 27, 1830.

Delta rockets are a family of vehicles by which a wide variety of satellites have been launched as part of U.S. and international space programs. NASA placed the original contract with the Douglas Aircraft Company in April 1959. The early three-stage vehicle had an overall length of 26.8 m (88 ft), and the rocket's liftoff weight was 51,480 kg (113,500 lb). The modified Thor first stage had a thrust of about 756,000 newtons (77,100 kg/170,000 lb).

On May 13, 1960, the first Delta did not achieve orbit, but later vehicles proved very reliable.

Modifications since the first Deltas include strap-on solid rocket boosters, increased main-stage thrust, larger propellant tankage, and improved guidance. The most powerful version thus far is Delta 3920/PAM-D (Payload Assist Module-Delta class), first used in 1982, which has nine strap-on boosters. Its three stages have an overall height of 41.6 m (136.5 ft), its launch weight is 193,593 kg (426,800 lb), and total thrust is 452,367 kg (997,300 lb). A delay in Delta launchings followed the forced destruction of a rocket in May 1986 when it failed during launch. The program resumed in February 1989 when a NAVSTAR satellite was launched by a modified vehicle called Delta II, which also uses nine strap-on boosters. In 1996 the Mars Global Surveyor and the Mars Pathfinder were sent on their way toward Mars by two Delta II vehicles. A new version of the rocket, Delta III, exploded in August 1998 during an attempted launch of a communications satellite from Cape Canaveral.

The American poet Louis Zukofsky, b. New York City, Jan. 23, 1904, d. May 13, 1978, helped establish the "objectivist" movement in the 1920s to celebrate the primacy of natural, visible objects in poetry. Objectivism has some affinities with the imagism of Ezra Pound. His major work, a collection called A (begun 1927 but refined and augmented until his death), influenced many younger poets; his shorter verse appears in All (1971). Zukofsky published his autobiography in 1970.

APHRODITE COMING OUT OF THE WATER

Yogyakarta (formerly Jogjakarta) is located at the base of volcanic Mount Merapi in southern Java, Indonesia. The city has a population of 419,500 (1995 est.). Surrounded by one of the island's most fertile agricultural areas (rice, sugarcane, tobacco), Yogyakarta is a commercial, cultural, and industrial center. Its manufactures range from machinery, transportation equipment, chemicals, and paper products to processed foods and traditional handicrafts such as batik cloth and silver and leather work. Gajah Mada University (1949) is located in part of the 18th-century palace of the sultans of Yogyakarta. The Islamic University of Indonesia (1945) and numerous other educational and cultural institutions are in the city. The Buddhist shrine of Borobudur is nearby.

Yogyakarta was founded in 1749 by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I of the Mataram kingdom, which came under Dutch protection in 1755. Britain temporarily controlled the city from 1812 to 1816, and it was the center of a revolt (1825-30) against the Dutch.

Java's topography is made up of longitudinal belts of limestone platforms, eroded volcanic mountains, volcanoes (35 of 112 are active), and alluvial valleys. Mount Merapi, in central Java, is considered the most dangerous of Indonesia's 500 volcanos. It erupted several times in the 20th century and again in early 2001; its most destructive modern eruption, in 1930, killed 1,300 people.

Wily Coyote's GE Allegory
STURGEON (SURGEON) ROE

Sturgeons, family Acipenseridae, are among the most primitive of the actinopterygian (ray-finned) fishes. Sturgeons and paddlefishes, family Polyodontidae, are the only surviving members of the Chonodrostei, a group that includes many extinct fish families.

Sturgeons have an elongated body and head and a sharklike upper lobe of the tail fin. The mouth lies far below the head and has four fleshy barbels in front of it. The head itself, sometimes flattened, is covered by large interlocking skull bones. Sturgeons are scaleless except for five rows of large, pointed, platelike scales running along the top and sides of the body. Their skeleton is part bone and part cartilage, placing them midway between sharks and bony fishes. They are confined to Northern Hemisphere waters. The marine species live as adults in marine waters but return to freshwater rivers and streams to breed.

Sturgeons are slow-moving bottom-dwellers. They locate food by their sensitive barbels and by taste buds located outside and around the mouth. Small invertebrates comprise the bulk of their diet. The fishes are famed for their blackish roe (eggs), which are salted and called caviar. (A number of kinds of fish eggs are used to produce caviar, but sturgeon caviar is deemed superior.) The roe are usually taken by killing the female, but because females may take up to 12 years to reach maturity, this method has caused drastic reductions in sturgeon populations. The modern conservation method of stripping (squeezing the abdomen to release the roe) allows the female to be returned alive to produce more eggs. Sturgeons have also been caught for their flesh and oil.

Four genera of sturgeons are recognized. Huso is distributed from the Adriatic Sea drainage to the Amur River in Eurasia. One species, the beluga, H. huso, is the largest of all freshwater fishes. Specimens have reached a length of 8.4 m (28 ft) and a weight of 1,260 kg (2,800 lb). This species also produces the finest caviar. The genus Acipenser, closely related to Huso, is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Most North American sturgeons belong to Acipenser, including the largest North American fish, the white sturgeon, A. transmontanus, which reaches nearly 130 kg (286 lb). Smaller sturgeons include the genus Pseudoscaphirhynchus of the Aral Sea basin and the genus Scaphirhynchus of North America, which reaches a length of about 90 cm (3 ft) and a weight of 2.7 kg (6 lb)

Poaching in Russia, combined with pollution effects, has endangered some species, despite the nation's banning of commercial fishing for sturgeon to protect the decreasing populations there. The financial benefits of the poaching almost guarantee its continuance while stocks last.

Oort Cloud Visitors 49
HUBBLE RUBBLE IS CELESTIAL BOWLING

The comet, called "57P/du Toit-Neujmin-Delporte," (TOI) broke into 19 pieces, 18 of which could be seen to the right of the main chunk in a released image, which is a mosaic of several pictures taken between July 17 and 19, 2002.

The disaster in space was probably triggered by thermal stresses within the comet's nucleus as it was warmed by sunlight, according to a statement then issued by the University of Hawaii.

Comets are made mostly of ice, dirt and rock. When comets approach the inner solar system, sunlight evaporates the ice in large quantities, sometimes generating a visible head, or coma (see cashew), that glows from reflected sunlight. In extreme cases that can delight ground observers, a tail (more like a beard) becomes visible. Since the ice and rock are intimately mixed, astronomers explain, the warming and evaporating ice produces great thermal and physical stresses on the body of the nucleus.

#2 is #1

The Hubble Space Telescope is currently providing the world's astronomers with extraordinary views of Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. (MOI)

The fragile comet is rapidly disintegrating as it approaches the Sun. Hubble images have uncovered many more fragments than have been reported by ground-based observers. These observations provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the demise of a comet nucleus. The comet is currently a chain of over three dozen (40) separate fragments, named alphabetically, stretching across the sky by several times the angular diameter of the Moon. Hubble caught two of the fragments (B and G) shortly after large outbursts in activity.

Hubble shows several dozen "mini-comets? trailing behind each main fragment, probably associated with the ejection of house-sized chunks of surface material.

Deep-freeze relics of the early solar system, cometary nuclei are porous and fragile mixes of dust and ices that can break apart due to the thermal, gravitational, and dynamical stresses of approaching the Sun. Whether any of the many fragments survive the trip around the Sun remains to be seen in the weeks ahead.

Now, imagine such a rain (Iran) of fiery rocks striking Earth in a wide swath across the northern hemisphere, extending from the 49th to the 39th parallel (see "the empty quarter" - Yemen / Saudi Arabia) happening without peoples being warned by astronomers to get out of "the way."

Zugunruhe: The migratory drive in animals, especially of the HUMAN AVIAN kind.

The Ruhr Valley, one of the world's most vital industrial regions, is in west central Germany, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The 235-km-long (145-mi) Ruhr River and its tributaries--the Mohne and Lenne--water the region. Overlying one of the world's most extensive coal deposits, the region's industries produce steel, iron, and other metals, and chemicals. The major industrial cities within the Ruhr area are Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, Mulheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen, and Witten. Duisburg, the great Rhine River port, serves as the entrepot, or warehouse, for the Ruhr Valley.

The Westphalians (The West's "Celtic 16" Persian Arians), a western Saxon people and founders of BRITAIN in 1066, moved into the region during the early Middle Ages. Westphalia was granted (1180) as a duchy to the archbishop of Cologne. The archbishops were nominal overlords of the region until 1803, even though their authority was restricted by the emergence of other temporal and ecclesiastical powers within Westphalia. The Peace of Westphalia (1648), which ended the Thirty Years' War, was signed at Munster

The Thirty Years' War (1618-48) was the last major European war of religion and the first all-European struggle for secular power. It was, in fact, a series of wars fought mainly on German soil and was only part of a larger struggle to alter the European quincux balance of power.

The religious wars that had divided Germany and the Holy Roman Empire as a result of the Protestant Reformation ended in compromise with the Peace of Augsburg (1555), and there was peace between the Protestant and Roman Catholic states of the empire for the next 50 years. In the early 17th century, however, tensions between the rival faiths revived the unrest.

Chronicles of Iran (nARNIa)
GRAND CANALS: MINING IS "THE WAY"

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, located in the city of the same name in Sichuan (Szechuan) province, China, represents a historic landmark in the development of water-management technology. Begun in about 250 BC by the scholar Li Bing and his son, the irrigation system diverts the waters of the Min River into irrigation canals and distributes them to farms on the fertile Chengdu (Ch'eng-tu) plain. Still functional, the system has made this one of China's most productive agricultural areas. With Mount Qingcheng (Ch'ing-ch'eng), the irrigation system was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Known as "transport river" in Chinese, the history of the Grand Canal, in the city of Yangzhou, (roughly parallel to the coast of the Yellow Sea) Jiangsu province, dates back more than 2,600 years. The canal was dug in three stages. A gigantic irrigation project of ancient China, it connects five large rivers and runs past several major cities, including Beijing. The canal extends some 1,115 mi (1,794 km) and remains the longest waterway made by humans. Its construction extended over several centuries, and it did not become known as the Grand Canal until the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368)

Venice, Italy, is a city whose symbol could very well be the gondola; gondola is a word in the Venetian dialect that dates back to the 16th century. The Grand Canal is Venice's historic main traffic artery; and travel about the city is by gondola, motorboat, water-bus, or on foot. The 18th-century Italian master Bernardo Bellotto's paintings are often considered the artist's most important original works, his early paintings of Venice, Turin, and Florence are greatly admired. They also show the influence of his uncle and teacher, Canaletto. See Bellotto's painting styled Grand Canal, Venice.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, in Venice, focuses on abstract art and surrealism. A collection of more than 300 large American minimalist sculptures and paintings was acquired in 1990 (see minimal art). Starting in the 1990s and into the new millennium, the Guggenheim museum family has expanded. A new, downtown Guggenheim was also opened, in New York City's SoHo area in 1992.

The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, opened in 1997, as did a more modest branch of the museum, the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. The proposed Guggenheim Museum Venice of Contemporary Art will be housed in the Old Customs House (Dogana Vecchia) at the tip of the Grand Canal; it is expected to open in 2002. Plans for a third Guggenheim Museum in New York City were also announced in 2000. With Gehry again as architect, the proposed $678-million museum will be located on the East River, south of the Brooklyn Bridge.

In 2001 two new Guggenheim museums opened in Las Vegas, the Guggenheim Las Vegas and the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum. Both are located inside The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino, and both were designed by architect Rem Koolhaas. The Guggenheim Hermitage is a partnership with the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Coming to a food cartel near you is the central North American, Archer Daniels Midland, Athabaska to Nebraska, GRAND CANAL III.

Following the coming planned "CLEANSING" of America's coastline, the vast continental farm this new canal will help irrigate, from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to the Rocky Mountains, is expected to grow food for the central Asian Plateau's workforce. Millions of "manna meals on wings plates" will be transported daily, first from processing plants located in Chicago, and later, from Winnipeg. Farms will be outlawed in Central Asia.

War on Women SeeSAW
(Szechwan is Europe's Czech Republic CZAR - SWAN)

The site is important because of its close association with the foundation of Daoism (Taoism), one of Asia's major religions. Zhan Daoling (Chang Tao-ling), the founder of the Celestial Masters movement and the Yellow Turban movement, major Daoist sects which battled the imperial government, taught there in the 2nd century. The mountain reportedly received its name because its cliffs, topped by lush vegetation, resemble city walls (see Wall Street and Wal*Mart). More than 30 of the original 70 or more temples and other religious structures on the mountain survive, including Heavenly Teacher Cave and the Holy Lantern Pavilion. Qingcheng Mountain, along with the nearby historic Dujiangyan Irrigation System, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The Daoist movement began during the Eastern Zhou (Chou) dynasty (c.770-256 BC), when religious hermits challenged Confucius's socially responsible dao (tao, prescriptive doctrine, or way; AYE AYE IRS is "THE WAY"). The Daode Jing (Tao Te Ching), sometimes called the LAOS Laozi (Lao-tzu) after its legendary author, and the Zuangzi (Chuang-tzu) stand as the core texts of Daoism.

Daoist religion provided a foothold for the introduction of Buddhism and influenced the form of its elaboration in China. Daoists developed a collection of over 1,400 scriptures known as Daozang (Tao-tsang). Religious Daoism and Buddhism have blended in the minds of most ordinary (read BRAINDEAD) Chinese believers, found now principally in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The greatest of all illustrated books are the Babar series by Jean de Brunhoff, translated from the French beginning in 1933.

The first Babar book (1933; Eng. trans., 1935; animated film, 1989), a story for children about a Hindu/African royal humanized elephant was continued in sequels by de Brunhoff's son, Laurent

The inspiration for the Babar stories was reportedly provided by the elder Brunhoff's wife, who had created the character in the course of amusing her own children. Brunhoff put his wife's story to paper and illustrated it himself. The first were oversize picture books, printed in script. The hero is a proper Edwardian elephant, dressed in an 1890s three-piece suit and an (owl) crown that he is never without.

The first story depicted the tragedy of a family of elephant babies seeing their mother killed by hunters. Fearful that he will also be shot, Babar focuses on escape and survival--both physical and psychological.

Subsequent stories have him living with his wife, Celeste (Ceres-Seres), and their children in a place very much like Buckingham Palace (Taj Mahal), surrounded by an elephant entourage and reigning over his elephant subjects (though occasionally one finds a human as well). The setting, while very European in its depiction of parks, palace grounds, and city streets, also includes exotic Indian animals.

The Babar tales radically changed the character of the illustrated book.

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." ...Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina

The kingdom of Champa, located on the Indochinese peninsula and inhabited by the Chams, a people ethnically related to the present-day peoples of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, originated late in the 2d century AD. First based in Quang Nam province, Vietnam, near Hue, it extended south to Camranh Bay and west into Cambodia and Laos. My Son Sanctuary, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains the impressive ruins of the former Champa capital.

Champa's culture was derived from India and embodied Hindu (Brahmin) religious and artistic concepts. In 939, following Chinese recognition of the independence of Annam (in what is now northern Vietnam), the Annamese first attacked the Chams. Nearly five centuries later, in 1471, a decisive defeat by Annam effectively ended Champa's existence. In 1995 there were about 220,000 Cham-speakers in Cambodia and another 110,000 in Vietnam.

The Annamese Cordillera, extend from north to south along the eastern border. The Annamese mountains reach elevations of less than 2,438 m (8,000 ft) but are extremely rugged and are a major obstacle to travel and communication between Laos (soul) and Vietnam (End Times man - 6).

Annam is a former kingdom and French protectorate located on the central coast of what is now Vietnam. The region was conquered by the Chinese in the 3rd century BC. It was a kingdom under Chinese rule until 939 AD when the Annamese formed an independent state. A dynastic division in the 16th century created two domains (see Tahiti's Omaih), Tonkin on the north and Cochin China on the south. Following the dissolution of the dynasties in the late 18th century, Annam was reunited, with French "Trojan Horse" assistance, as an empire in 1802. French "polyanna" influence increased until 1883 when Annam was established as a French protectorate. In 1887, Annam joined the Union of Indochina. After World War II, it became part of Vietnam and in 1954 was partitioned between North and South Vietnam. The last emperor of Annam, Bao Dai, abdicated in 1945 but was returned as a French puppet. He was finally deposed in 1955.

The population is predominantly Annamese; the indigenous Moi inhabit the highlands. The Annamese people can be traced to a Chinese culture of the Yuan River valley in Tonkin that existed before the Chinese conquest of the 3rd century BC.

The "Moists", taught the existence of a Supreme Spirit that possessed equal and universal love for all people--the "Legalists" (Hindu fathers), who advocated a practical philosophy of political domination; and the "Buddhists" (sons), who became important from the 4th century AD on, also exercised wide influence in Chinese thought. Within the Neoconfucian tradition a variety of protest/reform positions emerged.

Thibet's Qing Buddie Buddie
MONGOLIA : ASIA'S RE-EMERGING GOLIATH

Proto Trojan Horses

Buddhist Mongolia spreads out across 1.5 million sq km of the Central Asian plateau. Sunni Muslim Kazakhs in the west are the only significant national and religious minority, comprising some 5% of the population.

A third of the population lives in the capital, while half the people herd livestock in the countryside. But the centuries-old nomadic lifestyle is being eroded; some say it will be lucky to survive the changing times.

The country has some of Asia's richest deposits of minerals although, as with Canada's Tar Sands oil deposits, these remain largely unexploited reserves.

* Population: 2.7 million (many more in China)
* Capital: Ulan Bator
* Area: 1.56 million sq km (603,909 sq miles)
* Major language: Mongolian
* Major religion: Buddhism
* Life expectancy: 62 years (men), 66 years (women)
* Monetary unit: 1 Togrog (tugrik) = 100 mongos
* Main exports: Copper concentrate, dehaired cashmere, textiles, hides

The Mongols, whose homeland is the elevated plateau land of east central Asia, re-emerged once again as a major force in human history early in the 13th century. For nearly two centuries they raided, invaded, conquered, and destroyed many more highly developed countries and peoples. But their obvious impact on the outside world--an impact that had largely ended by the beginning of the 15th century--was as brief as it was bloody. Most of the great Mongol khanates, or states, disintegrated in the 14th century, and the once-powerful Mongols were, reportedly, later subdued themselves by the Manchus, invaders and conquerors of China. Independent since the overthrow of the Manchu, or Qing (Ch'ing) dynasty, in China in 1911-12, the northernmost Mongols today constitute the independent Republic of Mongolia.

The Qing (or Manchu) dynasty, founded by conquerors from Manchuria in 1644, was the last imperial dynasty of China. When it was overthrown in 1911, China became a republic. Under the Manchus the Chinese empire reached its greatest extent, covering all of China proper, four outlying dependencies (Manchuria, Mongolia, Xinjiang/Sinkiang, and Thibet), and several tributary states--chiefly Korea, Annam, Burma (Myanmar), and Nepal. During its first 150 years the Qing dynasty also vigorously promoted cultural and economic growth as the masterful emperors Kangxi (K'ang-hsi; r. 1661-1722) and Qianlong (Ch'ien-lung; r. 1735-96) preserved the institutions of Neo-Confucianism while enlarging contacts with the West. From this period came the great novel The Dream of the Red Chamber, and there was a steady flow of travelers and missionaries from Europe. See Archetype and Allegory in "The Dream of the Red Chamber" (1975; repr. 1983).

A yurt is a portable tent that serves as the usual dwelling for the Turkic and Mongolian pastoral nomads of Central Asia. Typically it is made of felt, supported by a wooden frame, and secured with ropes made of hair. The floor plan is traditionally circular: the sides stand erect over a lattice frame, and the top slopes inward to form a dome over an eight-spoked wheel of timber beams. The floor is covered with felt pads and carpets. The English word yurt is borrowed from the Russian yurta, borrowed in turn from the Turkish yurd, meaning "domicile," "nation," or "sixth estate."

"Bush - Nazi Dealings Continued Until 1951
The New Hampshire Gazette Vol. 248, No. 3,
November 7, 2003

After the seizures in late 1942 of five U.S. enterprises he managed on behalf of Nazi industrialist Fritz Thyssen, Prescott Bush, the grandfather of President George W. Bush, failed to divest himself of more than a dozen "enemy national" relationships that continue\d until as late as 1951, newly-discovered U.S. government documents reveal.

Furthermore, the records show that Bush and his colleagues routinely attempted to conceal their activities from government investigators.

Bush's partners in the secret web of Thyssen-controlled ventures included former New York Governor W. Averell Harriman and his younger brother, E. Roland Harriman. Their quarter-century of Nazi financial transactions, from 1924-1951, were conducted by the New York private banking firm, Brown Brothers Harriman.

Although the additional seizures under the Trading with the Enemy Act did not take place until after the war, documents from The National Archives and Library of Congress confirm that Bush and his partners continued their Nazi dealings unabated. These activities included a financial relationship with the German city of Hanover and several industrial concerns. They went undetected by investigators until after World War Two.

At the same time Bush and the Harrimans were profiting from their Nazi (NATSI) partnerships, W. Averell Harriman was serving as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's personal emissary to the United Kingdom during the toughest years of the war. On October 28, 1942, the same day two key Bush-Harriman-run businesses were being seized by the U.S. government, Harriman was meeting in London with Field Marshall Smuts to discuss the war effort.

Denial and Deceit

While Harriman was concealing his Nazi relationships from his government colleagues, Cornelius Livense, the top executive of the interlocking German concerns held under the corporate umbrella of Union Banking Corporation (UBC), repeatedly tried to mislead investigators, and was sometimes supported in his subterfuge by Brown Brothers Harriman.

All of the assets of UBC and its related businesses belonged to Thyssen-controlled enterprises, including his Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart in Rotterdam, the documents state.

Nevertheless, Livense, president of UBC, claimed to have no knowledge of such a relationship. "Strangely enough, (Livense) claims he does not know the actual ownership of the company," states a government report.

H.D Pennington, manager of Brown Brothers Harriman and a director of UBC "for many years," also lied to investigators about the secret and well-concealed relationship with Thyssen's Dutch bank, according to the documents.

Investigators later reported that the company was "wholly owned" by Thyssen's Dutch bank.

Despite such ongoing subterfuge, U.S. investigators were able to show that "a careful examination of UBC's general ledger, cash books and journals from 1919 until the present date clearly establish that the principal and practically only source of funds has been Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart."

In yet another attempt to mislead investigators, Livense said that $240,000 in banknotes in a safe deposit box at Underwriters Trust Co. in New York had been given to him by another UBC-Thyssen associate, H.J. Kouwenhoven, managing director of Thyssen's Dutch bank and a director of the August Thyssen Bank in Berlin. August Thyssen was Fritz's father.

The government report shows that Livense first neglected to report the $240,000, then claimed that it had been given to him as a gift by Kouwenhoven. However, by the time Livense filed a financial disclosure with U.S. officials, he changed his story again and reported the sum as a debt rather than a cash holding.

In yet another attempt, reportedly to deceive the governments of both the U.S. and Canada, Livense and his partners misreported the facts about the sale of a Canadian Nazi front enterprise, La Cooperative Catholique des Consommateurs de Combustible, which imported German coal into Canada via the web of Thyssen-controlled U.S. businesses.

"The Canadian authorities, however, were not taken in by this maneuver," a U.S. government report states. The coal company was later seized by Canadian authorities.

After the war, a total of 18 additional Brown Brothers Harriman and UBC-related client assets were seized under The Trading with the Enemy Act, including several that showed the continuation of a relationship with the Thyssen family after the initial 1942 seizures.

The records also show that Bush and the Harrimans conducted business after the war with related concerns doing business in or moving assets into Switzerland, Panama, Argentina and Brazil - all critical outposts for the flight of Nazi capital after Germany's surrender in 1945. Fritz Thyssen died in Argentina in 1951.

One of the final seizures, in October 1950, concerned the U.S. assets of a Nazi baroness named Theresia Maria Ida Beneditka Huberta Stanislava Martina von Schwarzenberg, who also used two shorter aliases. Brown Brothers Harriman, where Prescott Bush and the Harrimans were partners, attempted to convince government investigators that the baroness had been a victim of Nazi persecution and therefore should be allowed to maintain her assets.

"It appears, rather, that the subject was a member of the Nazi party," government investigators concluded.

At the same time the last Brown Brothers Harriman client assets were seized, Prescott Bush announced his Senate campaign that led to his election in 1952.
