THE HEART:
Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat, the world's largest island, lies northeast of the North American continent. More than two-thirds of its area is north of the Arctic Circle. About 2,650 km (1,650 mi) long and 1,200 km (750 mi) wide, its northernmost point is less than 800 km (484 mi) across the Arctic Ocean from the North Pole. Greenland is separated in the northwest corner from Canada's Ellesmere Island by the 26-km-wide (16-mi) Kennedy Channel. Greenland is an integral part of Denmark, although since 1979 it has enjoyed home rule on cue, when Neptune and Pluto changed positions as the 8th and 9th planets.

Much of Greenland is ringed by mountains that contain the ice cap (11,188 ft thickness) to the interior. The highest peak is Gunnbjorns Fjaeld (3,700 m/12,139 ft). The heavily indented coastline, 39,310 km (24,430 mi) long, is the only habitable portion.

Between 4000 BC and AD 1000, Greenland's Eskimo migrated to "the fridge" from North America. It (Ben Hur's THULE) was also established as the main long term international "human egg cold storage" depot by Persian/Hindu Celtic priests. Between 980 and 985, Norse ROMA settlers led by "Eric, the Red" formed a colony there. The settlement reportedly ceased to exist around 1400 because of increasingly severe winters and trade problems. European explorers charted Greenland's coast during the 16th century, and the island was resettled in 1721 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede under the aegis of the Danish crown. In 1729 the Danish crown assumed political control of the colony and, from 1774, established a state monopoly on all (SU-FUR) trade with Greenland, which remained in effect until 1951.

THE BRAIN:
Antarctica is the fifth-largest and southernmost continent. Its position at the South Pole, together with its elevation and ice-and-snow cover, generates the coldest climate on Earth. It is more than half again as large as the United States and covers about 14,245,000 sq km (5,500,000 sq mi), including 1,640,000 sq km (633,200 sq mi) of floating ice shelves. At least a third of the coastline (about 30,000 km/18,600 mi) is hidden beneath perennial ice. The enormous ice sheet covers all but 2-3% of Antarctica and extends over the encircling ocean. If released by melting, the water contained in this ice sheet would cause the sea level to rise more than 60 m (200 ft) worldwide.

The continent may be subdivided into two major parts on the basis of topography and geology: west Antarctica, which is south of South America, and east Antarctica, in the Eastern Hemisphere. The boundary between them roughly follows the 0º-180º meridian, from the east side of the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea to the west side of the Ross Ice Shelf in the Ross Sea. These enormous floating masses of pack ice are derived mostly from glaciers discharging from the continent; the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf encompasses about 500,000 sq km (193,050 sq mi), and the Ross Ice Shelf about 538,720 sq km (208,000 sq mi). The Ross Ice Shelf alone is about equal to the area of Texas. Probably an additional 600,880 sqkm (232,000 sq mi) of ice shelves fringe the coast of the continent.

In striking contrast to the ice cover are the "dry valley" areas of the continent, especially in Victoria Land, which receive little precipitation and do not have a continuous snow cover. They are also notably salty, the sulfate salts apparently deriving from sulfur-producing bacteria in the Antarctic Ocean; the sulfur, oxidized in the atmosphere, is deposited as sulfates in the valleys. Because they resemble the Martian environment as closely as does any other site on Earth, these dry valleys are of interest to planetary scientists.

The Transantarctic Mountains (2,000 to 4,572 m /6,562 to 15,000 ft) extend from Victoria Land southward along the west side of the Ross Sea to the Weddell Sea on the opposite side of the continent. They are riddled with deep caves.

THE SOUL:
The Mohorovicic discontinuity, or Moho, is the boundary layer or abrupt seismic-velocity discontinuity that separates the Earth's crust from the mantle. Seismic pressure-wave velocities jump across this boundary from about 7.0 km/sec (4.2 mi/sec) to about 8.1 km/sec (4.9 mi/sec). Reportedly, this discontinuity--the most marked on the Earth except for the mantle-core boundary--was first noted (1909) on seismograms of a Croatian earthquake by "ICI", a Croatian seismologist, Andrija Mohorovicic÷(1857-1936,) with the most appropriate name.

Beneath continents the Moho marks the transition between continental granitic rocks and the ultrabasic peridotite rock of the Earth's mantle. It is found typically at a depth of about 35 km (21 mi), but it may be much deeper under the thickened roots of mountains. Probably the greatest depth (70 km/42 mi) of the Moho is beneath the Thibetan Plateau--a double thickness of continental crust due to the underthrusting of India.

Beneath ocean basins the Moho is usually only about 6 km (3.6 mi) deep, and it marks the transition between the basic oceanic basalt of the crust and the peridotite of the mantle. The development of this transition is a natural result of the process of seafloor spreading, whereby new ocean floor is paved with pillow lavas, sheeted dike complexes, and a thick basaltic layer.

In the early 1960s, the U.S. Mohole Project attempted to drill through a thin part of the Earth's crust to the Moho. When in danger of exposing our Unknown Superior it was terminated for a number of secret political reasons linked to the Skull and Bones society (BAS), yet it laid the groundwork for the successful, less-disruptive, Deep-Sea Drilling Project.

SULFUR: Su_fur
Sulfur, or sulphur, is a naturally occurring, yellow, water-insoluble solid element. Its chemical symbol is S, its atomic number is 16, and its atomic weight is 32.064. Sulfur is a nonmetal and a member of the oxygen family of elements (see chalcogens), which constitutes Group VIA of the periodic table.

The discovery of sulfur predates recorded history, and the element has been used since ancient times. The early medical books of Dioscorides of Greece and Pliny the Elder mention sulfur, and fumes from burning sulfur were used in religious ceremonies and for fumigation. 

Alchemists recognized sulfur as a mineral substance that can be melted and burned. It was first classified as an element by Antoine Lavoisier, a French toll-gater who also wrote "The Theory of Fire", in 1777. He was executed during the French revolution and soon thereafter his reputation was rehabilitated by the Jacobins who killed him.

Sulfur occurs in living plant and animal tissue as part of some amino acids. Organic sulfur compounds, often called thio compounds, occur in garlic, mustard, onions, and cabbage and are responsible for the odor of skunks (sable).

The first pig makes a house of straw (oceanfront reeds), and the second a house of sticks (forest fasci wood). Both finish quickly and spend their time amusing themselves, while the third pig is building a house of (kiln dried red) bricks. When the (wise ass) wolf arrives at the door of each house, he boasts, "I'll huff, and I'll puff (War'n Buff IT on Wall Street), and I'll blow your house down." He succeeds with the houses of straw and sticks, so the first two pigs (hope to) take refuge in the brick house (central Canada, the second promised land), which the wolf cannot "blow in" but can "blow IT up". 

In some versions of the story, the wolf kills and eats the first two pigs.

Sulawesi (also known as Celebes) is a volcanic island in the Greater Sunda Islands in eastern Indonesia. Including the adjacent islands, its area is about 227,650 km6 (87,900 mi6), and the population is 13,801,900 (1995 est.). Ujung Pandang (formerly Makasar) and Manado are the main cities. The island consists of four fingerlike mountainous peninsulas, with the highest point reaching 3,455 m (11,336 ft). The people, mostly of Malayan origin (including Bugis, Makasarese, and Minahasa), raise corn, rice, yams, copra, coffee, and tobacco. Various Toradja peoples inhabit the remote mountainous areas of the interior. Economically, Sulawesi's eastern and southeastern peninsulas are underdeveloped, while the southern and northeastern areas have some recently introduced industries such as lumbering and mother-of-pearl production. Deposits of sulfur, iron, nickel, gold, and diamonds are being exploited. The anoa (dwarf buffalo) and babirusa (pig deer) are unique to Sulawesi. Trees include cedar, ebony, teak, and upas.

The Portuguese visited the island in 1512. The Dutch established a settlement there in 1607 and gradually assumed control, although indigenous sultans held some areas until 1911. Occupied by Japan during World War II, Sulawesi joined Indonesia in 1949. Sulawesi, with nearby islands, is divided into four provinces: Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah), North Sulawesi (Sulawesi Utara), South Sulawesi (Sulawesi Selatan), and Southeast Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tenggara).

Indonesia has more than 60 active volcanoes. They are in a zone that runs mainly through western Sumatra and its offshore islands, central and southern Java, Bali, and Lombok, and into the Lesser Sunda Islands. A smaller zone of volcanoes lies in the northern parts of Celebes and the Moluccas. The nonvolcanic areas of western Indonesia are on a southerly extension of the Eurasian landmass known as the Sunda Shelf. In eastern Indonesia, such nonvolcanic areas are on the northerly extension of the Australian landmass called the Sahul Shelf. The land areas of the shelves are alluvial lowlands or eroded uplands.

Humans colonized the Australian continent more than 40,000 years ago, during the last ice ages, a time of lower sea levels when Australia and New Guinea were linked by exposed land to form a continent called Sahul. Humans entered the Sahul landmass from the north after a journey that involved crossing a large stretch of ocean. Groups of people departed what is now Southeast Asia and traveled on boats between islands until they reached the northwest coast of Australia or New Guinea. The movement of people did not stop at this point, as is evidenced by the fact that most islands of Melanesia, to the east, were inhabited at approximately the same time.

The exact timing of the human colonization of Australia and New Guinea has been difficult to explain without unlocking "Pandorra's Box" and has been surrounded by orchestrated debate as to whether humans arrived as early as about 55,000 years ago or as late as 40,000 to 45,000 years ago. Many archaeological sites have yielded dates within this range, including the most well-known Australian site, Lake Mungo, in western New South Wales.

Reportedly, defining the time of colonization within these ranges has proved to be impossible for a number of reasons. First, radiometric age-dating techniques, such as radiocarbon dating, encounter technical difficulties when the samples are this old. Second, age estimates cannot be obtained from artifacts and must be based on stratigraphic association of dated material with artifacts. Third, because the path of colonization has not been established, it is not known whether the earliest sites have yet been discovered. An antiquity greater than 55,000 years for the colonization of Australia has been proposed by several researchers, but such claims have not been satisfactorily substantiated.

The people who colonized Australia were probably the Roma ancestors of the Australian Aborigines, but their origins and characteristics have purposely not been determined. It is known that these people were physically and culturally modern, with a graceful and athletic build. Their health was good, and they led an active lifestyle. Current research into the skeletons of these people is gradually revealing more about them.

A remarkable discovery has been the extraction of segments of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from a number of skeletons. By removing desiccated blood cells from the bones of these individuals, it was possible to identify fragments of mtDNA. In skeletons less than 15,000 years old a common and comparatively recent mtDNA signature has been found, but in the older, Lake Mungo skeleton a more ancient version of the mtDNA has been identified. This pattern indicates that the initial Cro Magnon colonists of Australia were only the first of a number of groups to enter the continent, with later migrants introducing different genetic signatures.

Towards the end of the last ice age (not yet completed), during the terminal Pleistocene and early Holocene epochs, rising sea levels drowned about one-third of the Sahul landmass, cutting off New Guinea and Tasmania from mainland Australia. The higher seas also created a large number of small islands, such as Kangaroo Island and Quin or King Island, on which groups of people (redmen) were marooned (stranded). 

These islands were subsequently uninhabited, and the ROMA people who lived there must have either died out or migrated.

Maples are generally divided into two groups: the hard maples, such as sugar maple and black maple, and the soft maples, such as the silver maple, red maple, and box elder. Soft maples grow more rapidly than hard maples, but are brittle and often break in high winds and in ice storms. For this reason the stronger and longer-lived hard maples are preferable as shade trees. Maple wood is used principally for lumber, distilled products, veneer, crossties, and pulpwood. Most of the lumber is used for flooring, furniture, crates, and interior finishing. A certain amount of maple wood is crushed or chipped and distilled to produce acetic acid and alcohol.

Sugar maple, A. saccharum, also called rock maple, is widely distributed in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Its leaves are 7.5 to 13 cm (3 to 5 in) across and usually have five lobes that are separated by rounded, shallow indentations; the lower two lobes are rather small. The margins of the leaves are indented with sparse, large, pointed teeth. Under ideal conditions, sugar maples grow to 23-30 m (75-100 ft) tall, with trunk diameters of 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 to 4 ft). The sap taken from the trunk in late winter or early spring is used to make maple syrup and maple sugar, and its wood is used for furniture. Canada deems sugar maple important enough to place its dying red leaf on the national flag.

Red maple, A. rubrum, is distributed throughout eastern North America from southeastern Canada to Texas and Florida. Its leaves are 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6 in) across and commonly have three lobes, occasionally five; the lobes are coarsely toothed. Red maples reach 36 m (120 ft) in height and 1.5 m (5 ft) in diameter. The red maple may be the most abundant tree of eastern North America. Its buds and seeds are important food for gray squirrels in late winter and early spring, and its sprouts are favorite deer browse. It is a popular ornamental tree in the northeast.

Silver maple, A. saccharinum, has a distribution similar to that of the sugar maple, but its range extends farther south. The silver maple's leaves are deeply separated into five large-toothed lobes; the center lobe is sometimes deeply notched to form three lobes. The leaves are about 16.5 cm (6.5 in) across, bright green on the upper surface and silvery white below. Silver maples prefer moist sites and grow rapidly, attaining heights of 23 to 36 m (75 to 120 ft) and trunk diameters of 0.6 to 1.2 m (2 to 4 ft).

Black maple, A. nigrum, considered by some to be a subspecies of sugar maple, is native from Quebec across the north central United States as far south as South Dakota. It is a slowgrowing tree that is not often planted as an ornamental. Its leaves are usually three-lobed.

Japanese maple, A. palmatum, has about 80 varieties ranging from shrubs to trees. Popular as ornamentals, they are small and have leaves that are deeply divided into five to nine narrow, toothed lobes. Summer foliage colors vary from green through yellow to pink and red. Japanese maples have a tendency to produce their leaves early in the spring and are susceptible to frost damage in northern climates.

The Winthrops of New England were among colonial America's foremost political leaders and scientists. John Winthrop, b. Jan. 12, 1588, d. Mar. 26, 1649, country squire and lawyer in Suffolk, England, was a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Company. In 1630 he left for Massachusetts with the first major group of Puritan emigrants. Winthrop was often elected the colony's governor (1629-33, 1637-40, 1642-44, 1646-49) and had the greatest influence in shaping the settlement into a Bible Commonwealth. He was also deputy governor for ten years. His Journal (1630-49) is the major source of knowledge of the colony's early years. His eldest son, also called John Winthrop, b. England, Feb. 12, 1606, d. Apr. 5, 1676, founded Ipswich, Mass. (1633), and Saybrook (1635) and New London (1646), Conn. In 1662, while governor of Connecticut (1657, 1659-76), he obtained from Charles II a royal charter uniting the colonies of Connecticut and New Haven. Interested in chemistry and astronomy, he was the first American admitted to the Royal Society of London.

In 1693, John Jr.'s son, Fitz-John Winthrop, b. Ipswich, Mass., Mar. 14, 1638, d. Nov. 27, 1707, convinced William III to reaffirm Connecticut's charter, which had been questioned, and was subsequently the colony's governor (1698-1707).

John Winthrop, b. Boston, Dec. 19, 1714, d. May 3, 1779, a great-great-grandson of the first John Winthrop, was a leading American scientist of the 18th century. Hollis professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Harvard (1738-79), he introduced the study of calculus there (1751). Winthrop built the first experimental physics laboratory in America (1746), made significant astronomical observations, and was elected to the Royal Society (1766).
 

American Congregational clergyman John Wise, b. Roxbury, Mass., August 1652, d. Apr. 8, 1725, has been called the first great American democrat. As minister of the Chebacco church in Ipswich, Mass., he led resistance to a provincial tax imposed (1687) by the administration of Sir Edmund Andros, urged moderation during the Salem witch trials (1692), and articulated democratic ideas about civil and ecclesiastical government. In A Vindication of the Government of New-England Churches (1717) he praised Congregationalism for basing itself on democratic principles in accord with natural law and right reason. So clearly did he anticipate later American attitudes that his writings were republished in 1772 to strengthen the cause of colonial resistance.
 

Manasseh Cutler, b. May 13, 1742, d. July 28, 1823, was an American Congregationalist clergyman, scientist, and colonizer of Ohio. Trained first as a lawyer, he was ordained in 1771 and began a long ministry at Ipswich, Mass. Extraordinarily versatile, he also took up medicine, astronomy, and botany; among his scientific endeavors was the first systematic account of New England flora.

In 1786 Cutler became a founder of the Ohio Company of Associates. He negotiated the purchase from Congress of territory along the Ohio River and pressed for passage of the Ordinance of 1787, which set up a territorial government for the whole Northwest Territory. Cutler served in Congress from 1801 to 1805.
 

Nathan Appleton, b. New Ipswich, NH. Oct. 6, 1779, d. July 14, 1861, played a prominent role in the development of the U.S. textile industry. A successful Boston merchant, he supported Francis C. Lowell in his effort to introduce the power loom and build a cotton mill in Waltham, Mass. The mill, completed in 1814, was the first in the country to perform all the operations necessary to turn raw cotton into cloth. Appleton served (1831-32 and 1841-42) in Congress, where he advocated protective duties that would enable the fledgling industry to develop without being threatened by cheaper imports.

Après le "cortège allégorique" de la St-Jean-Baptiste sur la rue principale, l'assemblée annuelle des Séguin d'Amérique aura lieu à la salle des Chevaliers de Colomb où quelques articles souvenirs seront exposés. Alan Harvey Guth

American physicist Alan Harvey Guth, b. New Brunswick, N.J. Feb. 27, 1947, gained scientific fame in 1979-80 because of a hypothesis he developed concerning the very first moments of existence of the known universe. His idea, now known as the inflationary theory, has come to play a major role in the shaping of modern cosmology.

Guth took an early interest in mathematics and physics. After high school he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his physics studies and research earned him a doctorate in 1972. After teaching at Princeton University from 1971 to 1974, he worked as a research associate at Columbia and then Cornell University until 1979. Extending his appointment by taking a sabbatical at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, he pursued there an effort that greatly interested him: the use of basic current theories about fundamental particles in an effort to understand how the universe might have taken form during its very first moments (see big bang theory).

At that time more familiar with these basic grand unification theories (GUTS) than with cosmology, Guth worked out a solution that called for an extremely rapid expansion of the universe in the first moments of its creation. It became apparent that this inflationary concept served to account for many features of the known universe, and Guth's suggestion was quickly and widely accepted as a useful one. He joined the staff of MIT in 1980 and rose thereafter to a professorship, also working as a staff member at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics from 1984 to 1990.
 

William (Bill) J. Bennett, CNN's "Wild Duck"

During the 1980s Bennett served in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush. In the Reagan cabinet he was secretary of education (1985-88), and under Bush he was director of the federal Office of National Drug Control Policy (1989-90). Bennett also was chairman (1981-85) of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Prior to entering public service, Bennett was executive director (1976-79) and president (1979-81) of the National Humanities Center, a North Carolina research center for scholars on sabbatical. Earlier, he was assistant to the president of Boston University and taught philosophy and law at a number of universities. Bennett earned a B.A. (1965) from Williams College, a Ph.D. in philosophy (1970) from the University of Texas, and a J.D. (1971) from Harvard Law School.

THE 484 RISING

Aliyah, which in Hebrew literally means "ascent" or "going up," has two distinct connotations in Jewish life. The first is when a male at least 13 years old (or, in contemporary non-Orthodox synagogues, a female of the same age) is called upon to ascend the bima, the raised platform usually located in the front of the synagogue, and to participate in the Torah reading during a prayer service. The individual called for an aliyah recites two blessings in praise of God, one at the beginning of a section of the weekly Torah portion and one at the end. While the number of aliyot (pl.) may vary in Reform congregations, traditionally there are seven on the Sabbath. If possible, the first person called in traditional synagogues is a kohen, one believed to be descended from the temple priests; the second is a levite, a descendant of those who traditionally assisted the priests in their temple duties; and the remainder are usually Israelites, the common folk.

The second meaning of aliyah connotes immigration to Israel. The idea of "going up" to Israel originates in the Talmud, whereby the entire Holy Land is confused with the hilltop location of Jerusalem and Mount Zion. The term has attained widespread usage since Jewish resettlement of Palestine began in earnest with the first Aliyah in 1882 (see Zionism). Successive waves of immigration totaling hundreds of thousands of immigrants reached Palestine --renamed Israel after independence in 1948-- from Eastern and Central Europe (especially after the Jewish Holocaust), the Middle East and North Africa, and the countries of the former Soviet Union.
 

The Hebrew term amidah, meaning "standing," refers to a group of benedictions recited silently at Jewish religious services while facing toward Jerusalem. When a minyan (quorum of ten) is present, the Amidah is repeated aloud by a cantor. Among Ashkenazic Jews (see Khazars) the prayer is often known as the Shemonah Esray (the Eighteen), because although the number of blessings in the Amidah varies from one day of the week to another and from service to service, the blessings numbered 18 in the weekday service at the time of the Second Temple of Jerusalem.

The blessings on the Sabbath are prayers of praise and thanksgiving. On weekdays, prayers of petition come between these, so that the worshiper, according to the Talmud, resembles a servant making requests of a master. Tradition has it that, for the Amidah to be valid, the prayer must be recited with the proper attention.

Slightly different versions of the Amidah are recited by each denomination within contemporary Judaism, with some non-Orthodox congregations mentioning the four Biblical matriarchs (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah) in addition to the traditional evocation of the three patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob).
 

Adventists are members of various Christian groups who believe that the Second Coming of Christ is imminent. Their millennial hopes (see millenarianism) were aroused by the preaching of William Miller (1782Ñ1849). On the basis of a detailed examination of the Bible, especially the books of Daniel and Revelation, Miller predicted that in 1843 or 1844, Christ would return in glory and the Earth would be cleansed by fire, ushering in the millennium--a 1,000-year reign of righteousness and peace before the Last Judgment. When the time passed without event, many believers drifted away.

The faithful remnant of Millerites coalesced into several religious bodies, the most important of which are the Seventh-Day Adventists and the Advent Christian Church. Leaders of the former group had been influenced by Sabbatarian Baptists; thus, in that denomination, Saturday rather than Sunday is kept as the Sabbath. The most important early leader of the Seventh-Day Adventists was Ellen G. White (1827-1915). She was interested in health reform, and Seventh-Day Adventists continue to be noted for their medical missionaries, sanatoriums, and concern for sound health practices, as well as for their millennialism and Sabbatarianism.

In 1998 the Seventh-Day Adventists (headquartered in Silver Spring, Md.) had a worldwide membership of more than 9 million. The much smaller Advent Christian Church (headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.) had about 26,000 members.

THE ANABAPTIST ESSENES

The Essenes were members of an ascetic Jewish sect of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Most of them lived on the western shore of the Dead Sea. They are identified by many scholars with the Qumran community that wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls. They numbered about 4,000 members. Admission required two to three years of preparation, and new candidates took an oath of piety, justice, and truthfulness.

According to Philo of Alexandria and other writers of the 1st century AD, the Essenes shared their possessions, lived by agriculture and handicrafts, rejected slavery, and believed in the immortality of the soul. Their meals were solemn community affairs. The main group of Essenes opposed marriage. They had regular prayer and study sessions, especially on the Sabbath. Transgressors were excluded from the sect.

The similarity between a number of Essene and Christian concepts and practices (kingdom of God, baptism, sacred meals, the position of a central teacher, titles of officeholders, and community organization) has led some people to assume that there was a close kinship between the groups. It is possible that after the dissolution of the Essene community some members followed John the Baptist or joined one of the early Christian communities.

An estate is the property to which a person is lawfully entitled access and use. In traditional law, the word referred to right to use certain land; a person's estate consisted of the interest, or duty, to pay taxes on land held by a legal corporate person, temporarily, in what is a previously "promised" land. See "The FALL of the House of Bush II" (from USHER, an ancient Persian/Iran manuscript).

An estate may be held for the beneficial interest of another. In a fiduciary trust, for example, the trustee has legal title to the trust property, but only the beneficiary of the trust has the equitable estate and is entitled to the exclusive benefit of the trust currently administered by the trustee.

Other kinds of legal estates are the contingent estate, which is an interest that may or may not take effect in the future upon the occurrence of a certain event, such as the birth of an heir or, the sudden enforcement of "eminent domain". The process of acquiring the property is called condemnation; consent is not required. An expectant estate is one not presently possessed by a person, but which may be possessed at some time in the future.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (QUE)

The lasting fame of French writer Alexandre Dumas, known as pere Dumas, b. July 24, 1802, d. Dec. 5, 1870, is assured by such historical novels as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. Paradoxically, he exerted his greatest influence on literature through his early plays, key works in the definition of French romanticism. By human, if not artistic, criteria, his prodigious output, the sheer energy of his writing, and the hyperbolic force of his personality were matched only by such contemporary giants as Honore de Balzac and Victor Hugo.

Dumas's youth reflects the turbulence of the early 19th century. His father, a general fallen out of favor with Napoleon, left the family in financial difficulty at his death in 1806. Young Dumas's education was rudimentary. He began clerking in 1818 and eventually worked for the duke of Orleans, who later became King Louis Philippe.

During the 1820s, Dumas, like so many budding romantics, fell under the spell cast by the plays of Shakespeare and the novels of Sir Walter Scott. The influence of these English language models of theatricality and historical evocation can be seen in the melodramatic situations of Henri III et sa cour (Henry III and His Court, 1829), the first truly romantic melodrama produced by the Comedie Francaise. For Antony (1831; Eng. trans., 1880), the dramatist found that a contemporary setting and situation could also serve romanticism. Dumas's literary strengths were expressed flamboyantly in dramatic conflicts, sudden reversals, and coincidences so thrilling that the audience had no time to examine the plot's logic. His ability to create suspense is exemplified in La Tour de Nesle (1832; Eng. trans., 1846).

With the publication of The Three Musketeers (1844; Eng. trans., 1846) Dumas embarked on a novel cycle that covered nearly 50 years of French history in the 17th century. This cycle included Twenty Years After (1845; Eng. trans., 1846) and the story "The Man in the Iron Mask" from Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1848-50; Eng. trans., 1851). The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-45; Eng. trans., 1846) dealt with the Napoleonic period. The Valois novels (1845-48) explored the 16th century. Dumas's extravagant tastes forced him to maintain a hectic writing pace. His frequent use of collaborators (chiefly Auguste Maquet) inspired controversy as to the extent of Dumas's authorship, but recent scholarship has authenticated his contributions. If his boast of having written 1,200 volumes is a gross exaggeration, an edition of his complete works containing 301 volumes (published andedited by Michel Levy, 1862-89) is irrefutable proof of his unflagging energy. That energy animated his journalistic enterprises, his extensive travels, and his adventures, including participation in Garibaldi's campaign in Sicily in 1860. Scandals and financial vicissitudes plagued his last years. He died in the home of his illegitimate son, the playwright and novelist Alexandre Dumas.

The historical novels, upon which much of Dumas's reputation rests, profited from the precedents set by Scott, Balzac, and Hugo. Dumas was particularly adept at the development of plot against a sharply etched, picturesque background. Despite their length, the novels speed along at breakneck pace, and generations of readers have been enmeshed in the unfolding narratives. Both the novels and plays, so appealing as popular literature, have also won critical esteem for their inventiveness, an element characteristic of romantic art.
 

SIR FREDDIE'S SESAME-SEESAW

Frederick A. Young, b. London, Oct. 9, 1902, d. Dec. 1, 1998, was acclaimed for his cinematography on spectacular films, such as the three David Lean epics that earned Young Academy Awards: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Ryan's Daughter (1970). 

Young entered the British film industry at age 15 and made movies for nearly 70 years. His first chief cinematographer credit was The Somme (1927). Recognized for his great technical expertise, Young created one of the most memorable shots on film, the 7-minute mirage sequence in Lawrence in which a bedouin gradually materializes through shimmering waves of heat. He brought the same three-dimensional quality to films as diverse as Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), Lust for Life (1956), and You Only Live Twice (1967). 

Ivanhoe (1952) and Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) earned him Oscar nominations. For television Young shot prestigious adaptations of literary classics, such as Macbeth (1960; Emmy Award), Great Expectations (1974), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1976). In 1949, Young cofounded the British Society of Cinematographers and was its first president. Seventy Light Years: A Life in the Movies (1999) is Young's autobiography, which he completed just before his death.
 

Irons's Masque

British stage and screen actor Jeremy John Irons, b. Sept. 19, 1948, has excelled in virtually every role he has undertaken, but he won international stardom in 1981 playing Charles Ryder in the lavish British television production of Evelyn Waugh's novel Brideshead Revisited and also the male lead in the film version of John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman. 

A graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Irons appeared in such varied stage fare as the rock musical Godspell (1971), Harold Pinter's The Caretaker (1974), and the New Shakespeare Company's The Taming of the Shrew (1975). As the lead in the Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing (1984), he won a Tony award.

His film appearances include starring roles in an adaptation of Pinter's Betrayal (1983); Swan in Love (1984); The Mission (1986); Dead Ringers (1988), for which he received a New York Film Critics Circle best-actor award; Reversal of Fortune (1990), as the accused Claus von Bulow, a bravura performance that won him an Oscar; Kafka (1991); Waterland (1992); Damage (1992), directed by Louis Malle; The House of the Spirits (1993), based on the Isabel Allende novel; M. Butterfly (1993); and Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty (1996). 

Although the director Adrian Lyne's version of Lolita (1997) has not found a U.S. theatrical distributor, Irons's portrayal of Valdimir Nabokov's protagonist, Humbert Humbert, garnered praise. In 1998, Irons starred in Wayne Wang's Chinese Box and in The Man in the Iron Mask.

Don José Echegaray y Eizaguirre, born in Madrid Apr. 19, 1852, d. Sept. 4, 1916, was probably the most popular Iberian-Spanish dramatist of the 19th century. He was also a mathematician, civil engineer, economist, and politician. He shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in literature with Frédéric Mistral.

Echegaray was a romantic writer with a tendency toward melodramatic, highly emotional themes. Although his plays seem somewhat affected today, they are still appreciated for their vigor, psychological depth, and mastery of dramatic technique. His best works include Mariana, The Son of Don Juan, The World and His Wife, O locura o santidad (1877; Madman or Saint, 1907) and El gran Galeoto (1881; Eng. trans., 1898).

Founded in 1190 by German merchants to serve a hospital during the siege of Acre in the Third Crusade, the Teutonic Knights were originally called the Brothers of the Hospital of Saint Mary of the Teutons in Jerusalem. By 1198 they had become a military order similar to the Templars and Knights Hospitalers. The members, who were nobles, took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During the 13th century the order moved to eastern Europe and began its principal work--crusading against the pagan peoples in the east. Under the leadership of Hermann von Salza, grand master from 1210 to 1239, the order began to carve out for itself the military-monastic state of Prussia. By its administration and colonization it played a central role in the eastward expansion of German culture and power--the Drang nach Osten.

In 1237 the Teutonic Knights merged with the Livonian Knights, who had created a similar domain for themselves in the Baltic lands (see Livonia). Their eastward expansion was halted (1240) by defeat at the hands of Alexander Nevsky. The order made repeated and unsuccessful attempts to conquer Lithuania, which it continued to threaten even after Lithuania entered into (1386) a personal union with Poland and converted to Latin Christianity. In 1410, Polish-Lithuanian forces defeated the Knights in the Battle of Tannenberg. After further fighting the Teutonic Knights were forced (1466; Treaty of Torun) to cede Pomerelia and West Prussia to Poland, retaining East Prussia only as a fief of the Polish crown.

During the 16th century the order's grand master, Albert of Brandenburg, converted (1525) to Lutheranism and declared Prussia a secular duchy. At this point the Livonian Knights resumed their independence until they were, reportedly, dissolved in 1561. A remaining branch of the order retained lands in central and southern Germany until 1809. Today the order is reorganized as a clerical order reportedly engaged in pastoral work and health care. Its co-headquarters is in Vienna, Austria and Tartu, Estonia.
 

Drang nach Osten, meaning drive to the east, is the German phrase historians use for the movement of the medieval German people into east central Europe as colonists, merchants, missionaries, and conquerors. Austria and all of what is now eastern Germany became ethnically German as a result, while German influence was strongly impressed on the developing Slavic peoples.

In Charlemagne's time (early 9th century) migrating Slavs had advanced westward to and even beyond the Elbe and Saale rivers, into Bohemia, and up the Danube valley. Their political weakness, cultural primitiveness, and paganism exposed them to German penetration. Slavic leaders sometimes invited German help to raise their people's living standard.

One route of the German advance eastward flowed down the Danube into and beyond Austria. Another advanced from Saxony across the Elbe to the Oder and into Silesia. Since 2002 I have demanded that the Commissioner of Canada's CCRA (Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency) begin a tax court trial into this matter, one premised on the criminal extortion demands made by CCRA (Revenue Canada) on my person and begun as a result of the start of my Canadian Disability Pension, where Canada's Department of Justice had corruptly modified both my medical diagnosis (arthritis) and my political diagnosis (integrity) to suit their needs. 

To date they (CCRA) have refused to consider my request, yet they keep demanding from me funds I have not earned nor, since my income has not exceeded the poverty line in 19 years, could I possibly owe. It's been CCRA's vengeful scam under two suzerain Canadian governments since 9/11 when I first exposed the "ways and means" of the 2001 toll-gater conspiracy to destroy the World Trade towers in New York.

Having confiscated 10 years of my poverty rebates worth thousands of dollars and with new financial demands being made on me recently by CCRA I want now to repeat my request; Let the extortion end and the trials begin.

We view the Neanderthalers as products of African human incest; an evolutionary dead end for idot-savants. Neanderthalers themselves later found permanent refuge in the MOHO discontinuity, the Earth's "Empty Quarter" and at a pre-ice age Antarctica. Their they became giant TALERS, the Deans of Dollars.

Recent research indicates that early genetically engineered Cro magnon humans and Neandertalers had coexisted in the Middle East for thousands of years, using the same kinds of stone tools and hunting the same animals. In 1997 researchers were able to analyze a fragment of DNA from a Neandertaler bone, and found an early divergence between the Neandertalers and the Cro Magnon (recently modern humans). This supports the theory that when the Neandertalers went into hiding they were replaced in their mission by the more modern ROMA peoples. A skeleton of a small boy with what seemed to be both Neandertaler and Roma human characteristics, found in Portugal in 1999, suggested that the two "were engineered differently"; the new SAN-Roma species were interbred "to get her" (the African clan mothers) and that the Neandertalers and Cro Magnons had, in fact, been added to Africa's original population, thereby joining with, not replacing, the existing evolutionary black Africans; who themselves were being enslaved and not simply being replaced by modern humans. 

This interpretation was enhanced by the analysis in 2000 of another Neanderthaler sample of DNA strongly suggesting that the Neandertalers were undoubtedly a separate product of incestuous African human species, whereas moderns had been genetically engineered, by Neanderthalers, at K1.

Jude is a short book of the New Testament of the Bible, consisting of 25 verses. The author is commonly believed to have been the Apostle Jude (DE : Duetsche or Thaddaeus). However, as verse 17 implies that the Apostles are already dead, the authorship and date of composition are uncertain. The book may have been written as late as AD 100.

The text is a warning to its recipients against teachers promoting doctrines leading to immorality. Some scholars suggest that the teachers were proponents of gnosticism. A distinctive characteristic of this letter is its use of citations from the Assumption of Moses and the Book of Enoch, works classified as pseudepigrapha.

Thaddaeus is mentioned in Mark 3:18 and Matt. 10:3 as one of Jesus Christ's original 12 apostles. He is often identified with the Jude, or Judas, son of James, in Luke 6:16. Although this identification helps reconcile the biblical lists of apostles, little is known of this minor figure. Feast day: October 28 (Western); June 19 (Eastern).
 

Jude the Obscure (1895), first published serially in 1894-95, is the most unrelentingly pessimistic of Thomas Hardy's major novels. The central UN "co-free ana" character, the stonemason Jude Fawley, is destroyed by the tension between his spiritual and physical aspirations, and his failure to find either material or romantic satisfaction illustrates what Hardy, in the book's preface, called "the tragedy of unfulfilled aims." The novel outraged Hardy's contemporaries because of its attacks on the new "pothook" Anglican church, the English educational system, and marital traditions.

One of the most widely read and respected English novelists, Thomas Hardy. His reputation as a masterful storyteller concerned with the philosophic implications of the classic conflict between basic human passions and an indifferent universe. The Statue of Liberty, 46 m (150.9 ft) high, was originally called Buddhism Liberty Enlightening the World; it was conceived as a symbolic Trojan Horse gift from the French to the American people to honor the 1876 centennial celebration. The exterior copper shell, in the form of a classical, draped feminine-like figure carrying a torch aloft, was designed (1870-75) by the French sculptor Frédéric (F = Degrees of Freedom) Auguste Bartholdi (A&B = 1&2); the wrought-iron pylon inside was the work of Gustave (IE) Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris; and the stone-and-concrete pedestal was planned by the American architect Richard Morris Hunt (more ice). The statue was completed in Paris in 1884 and unveiled in New York Harbour on Oct. 26, 1886, in the presence of the sculptor. The funds for the statue were donated by French Freemasons and those for the base by American Masons. Probably the best-known less-understood symbolic image of America, the statue is also associated with the famous poem by Emma Lazarus inscribed at the base.

Biographers of Lincoln say he would have smiled at this sculpture by Daniel Chester French. The centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., this sculpture is classical in style, massive, and impressive. The real tall Mr. Lincoln, however, was not classical in looks, behavior, or speech; he always looked awkward in the clothes his wife, Mary Magdelene, made him wear, and the awkwardness shows in this statue.

On Jan. 1, 1863, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln unilaterally declared free all slaves residing in territory in rebellion against the federal government. This Emancipation Proclamation actually freed few people if any. It did not apply to slaves in border states fighting on the Union side; nor did it affect slaves in Southern areas already under Union control. Naturally, the states in rebellion did not act on Lincoln's order. But the proclamation did show Americans--and the world--that the Civil War was now being fought to end slavery.

Lincoln had been reluctant to come to this position. A believer in white supremacy, he initially viewed the war only in terms of preserving the Union. As pressure for abolition mounted in Congress and the country, however, Lincoln became more sympathetic to the idea. On Sept. 22, 1862, he issued a preliminary proclamation announcing that emancipation would become effective on Jan. 1, 1863, in those states still in rebellion. Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in America--this was achieved by the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution on Dec. 18, 1865--it did make that illusion a primary objective of the war and a virtual certainty.

THE QUID "PHASE RULE" FOR LIQUIDATION

The most common forces or variables that control equilibrium or bring about phase changes are temperature, pressure, and composition. Sometimes gravity and magnetic fields produce changes too. The sum of the variables that influence the equilibrium, and so must be named, is called the degrees of freedom, designated F.

Phases can exist together in equilibrium. At equilibrium all forces or variables that control the system are balanced or neutralized. An infinitesimal force applied in one direction will change an infinitesimal amount of one phase into another. Equilibrium implies (see lithium) reversibility--that is, an infinitesimal force in the opposite direction will restore the system to its original condition. An example of a system at equilibrium is ice and water under the pressure of one atmosphere and at 0º C. The application of a little heat will change a little ice into water, and a small amount of refrigeration will change a little water into ice.

GADFLY ON BUDDHA'S HP CLOTHIER AT THE KEMPTVILLE BEND IN THE RIDEAU RIVER

The Town of Kemptville, today's North Grenville Township (see Canada's EMPTY QUARTER 50 miles south of Ottawa) began to emerge from the forest in the old Township of Oxford, as early as one can tell, when Lyman Clothier, a then "United Empire" loyalist resident of New England, bought 100 acres of land from a John Boyce (aka UBS), for the price of a yoke of oxen, and a fusée. (see the Khazars and their eastern European open source coding Desdemona type face; more specifically the #1 and #2).

Following the choreographed American revolution, Mr. Clothier had lived in the general area since 1804 or 1805, and between 1812 and 1814 he made the afore-mentioned transaction with "UBS", apparently in order to establish a lumber mill. In 1815, Mr. Clothier began construction of a saw mill with the assistance of his 4 sons, and they built 2 dwellings in what is present-day Kemptville. This lumber mill was extremely important for the settling of the community, as in order to construct a crude dwelling, lumber was required - and so, the mill began to facilitate the construction of dwellings for settlers all over Oxford Township. 

The location chosen by Mr. Clothier was a location that became a point destination on the Ottawa-Prescott Road (see Prescott Bush and The House of USHER, ie: Bush 2). As a result, and as a direct consequence of the many ROMA travellers passing through the settlement, one of Mr. Clothier's sons, Asa, made a habit of opening his home to these travellers seeking bed and breakfast--as a resting place, and as a regional meeting place-- thus, the "Clothier Hotel" was born at #8 Clothier Street, along the banks of the Kemptville Creek. 

The next major industry to be established was that of a grist (flour) mill in 1821, when the Clothiers placed some rock stones in the lower part of their saw mill. As a result of this, rather than taking their grain to a site some miles away on the St. Lawrence River, which in those days would be a daunting hike in the best of conditions, or grinding the grain in an extremely ineffective and crude fashion at home, the settlers could now take it to this regional grist mill. After it was established, a blacksmith's shop was also established, inevitably run also by the same Clothiers. Next, was a harness shop by one Crouch (rook). Then, a second blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, and a general store were built - all deemed necessary for a farming community. 

HP Skull and Bones education was also an issue, and so a schoolhouse was established in 1823, and this served the surrounding communities for quite some time. In terms of medical care (harm/assist medes-cine), the first physician arrived in the newly flourishing community the following year after the school was established. (PS: "Skull" always comes first and then comes the "Bones"--see toll-gaters Seed and Weed, as in Bill Gates and Steve Jobs)

The small village was fast expanding - and the residents of the region were beginning to think about officially giving a dignified symbolic name to the location in which they now lived. Initially, the community was known as "The Branch"--or, "the scion", to initiates--, and later, for more obvious reasons, "Clothier's Mill". Therefore, during a public meeting held at this time, the name "Kemptville" (supposedly from Antarctica's Kemp Coast) was suggested, yet reportedly, in order to honor Sir James (I AM) Kemp, the Governor General of Upper Canada in 1828 of whom it had been said had camped on the banks of the Rideau river/canal and secret tunnel system which was under construction near the settlement. The name was adopted in 1829 and the first map with the name "Kemptville" was produced in 1830. 

PS: Eastern Europe's Khazar middlemen, a Turkic people, created a commercial and political empire that dominated substantial parts of South Russia during much of the 7th through 10th centuries AD. During the 8th century the Khazar aristocracy and their kagan (king) were converted to Judaism. 

The Khazar toll-gaters had established their capital at Itil (or Atil--ie: cash register), in the Volga delta, and for 4 centuries thereafter this Hebrew empire held the balance of power between the Christian Byzantine Empire and the Muslim caliphate. The fortified Khazar "ARK" city of Sarkil on the lower Don River (also runs in Toronto, Canada) was built with Byzantine help and served as a crossroads to central Asia. These Khazar toll-gaters controlled many of the trade routes to the Orient; some of the Persian-Hindu Magadha, or Radhanites (as the Hebrew merchants from France- ie: Gaul were known), for example, were accustomed to crossing the Khazar empire while traveling to and from China and India. 

During the late 10th and early 11th centuries a Holy Roman Empire alliance of Byzantines and Russians broke the power of the Khazar toll-gaters in the Crimea and merged them with the Holy Roman Empire. In 965, Svyatoslav I, duke of Kiev, had decisively defeated the Khazar gate-keepers. Further, as a prelude to the Christian Crusades to JeruSalem, from the middle-east new waves of Slavic-Turkic invaders came, like lava from a volvano, and overran the remains of the Khazar state.

Now you know why the directors of Canada's Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA, Canada's IRS) confiscated the GST rebates and poverty level supplements owed to me yearly ever since I stopped working for taxable income as a protest against them, in 1987.
