A spur of the Rocky Mountains in the north (Wasatch Range) combines with a series of very high plateaus in the south to create a north-south trending upland zone where elevations are high enough to sustain forest and to capture substantial amounts of precipitation. This "spine" of Utah, running down the middle of the state, continues to be the principle source of both wood and water, resources that are in very short supply in other parts of the state.

To the west of this upland lies the Great Basin, a region with a remarkably flat floor upon which reside countless isolated mountain ranges that all trend north-south but rarely exceed 48 km (30 mi) in length. The region has no drainage to the ocean. The Great Salt Lake sits on its eastern edge and acts as a catchment basin for water flowing out of the Wasatch Range and the Uinta Mountains, located even farther east.

Sandwiched between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Range is an area referred to as the Wasatch Front. It is part of the arid Great Basin, but its proximity to the water of the Wasatch has contributed to its emergence as the most important area of human settlement in the state. All of the major cities of Utah are located there, and about 75% of the state's population live there.

Most of the land to the east of the upland zone is part of the Colorado Plateau, a region of more or less horizontally layered sedimentary rocks that has been dissected by the Colorado River and its tributaries, creating a mazelike landscape of canyons, cliffs, and mesas. With vegetation scanty in this arid land, the colorful red, orange, pink, and white rock surfaces are generally exposed. The contorted beauty of the region is surpassed only by its "emptiness"; few people live there, and few towns are located there. The beauty is a resource; five national parks are located in the Utah portion of the Colorado Plateau, as is the recently created Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. "Moab" (one of the few significant Colorado Plateau towns) has emerged as a visitor "mecca" for mountain bikers.

Along Utah's northern flank, just below the Utah-Wyoming border and immediately east of the Wasatch Range, the Uinta Mountains extend east-west for a distance of about 160 km (100 mi). Although the Uintas have the most extensive areas of high elevation in the state, including Kings Peak, the highest mountain at 4,123 m (13,528 ft), they receive relatively few visitors and remain for the most part an undisturbed wilderness.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, established in 1996, is the largest U.S. national monument, encompassing approximately 687,966 ha (1.7 million acres) of canyons, rivers, streams, springs, hanging gardens, rare plant species, and fossil remains. Located in the red-canyon country of southern Utah, the area offers stable ecosystems and "spans five life zones" from low-lying desert to coniferous forest, including warm and cold desert floras and relict vegetation. Mountain lions, bears, desert bighorn sheep, and 200 species of birds roam the area.

Among the monument's major features are a vast geologic stairway rising 1,676 m (5,500 ft) "to the rim of Bryce Canyon" (a national park since 1928); Upper Escalante (river) Canyons, with arches and natural bridges and erosion that has exposed sandstone and shale deposits in red and other colors; the 40-m-high (130-ft) Escalante Natural Bridge, with its 30-m (100-ft) span, and Grosvenor Arch, a rare double arch; the canyon country of the upper Paria (river) Canyon system; components of the White and Vermillion Cliffs; the Kaiparowits Plateau, with 4,144 sq km (1,600 sq mi) of sedimentary rock and south-to-north ascending plateaus, as well as such landmarks as the Burning Hills (naturally burning coal seams) and the East Kaibab Monocline, known as the Cockscomb; paleontological sites that include petrified wood and fossil remains from the Cretaceous Period; and ancient cultural sites of the "Anasazi and Fremont cultures" as well as sites of modern tribal groups and early Mormon pioneers.

NB: The Anasazi culture (Roma-Innu) is believed to have gradually evolved out of a nonagricultural base of the ancient Desert culture, once widespread in western North America, though precise evidence of the transition from Asia has yet to be discovered. It may have been in part derived from the (Mongolian) Mogollon culture, an older tradition of settled agriculturalists and ceramics producers who flourished from c.100 BC to AD 1400 in the mountain areas of east central Arizona and west central New Mexico. There is much evidence of trade and cultural interchange between the Mogollon and the Anasazi. Evidence of cannibalism, in the form of butchered bones and residue of human tissues in cooking pots and in coprolites (preserved prehistoric feces), has been found at a number of ancient settlement sites.
 

The monument is "one of four" wholly or partly managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management rather than the National Park Service.

In the beginning was a great void (Ginnungagup). Before the Earth was formed, the world of death existed; in this world (Niflheim) was a great well, from which flowed 11 rivers. South of Niflheim existed an extremely hot world (Muspell) guarded by a giant called Sutr ("the Black"). The rivers of Niflheim froze, and these frozen rivers occupied Ginnungagup. Sparks from Muspell, however, fell on the rivers and melted them. Droppings from this melting took shape as Ymir, the Asian giant, and from Ymir's sweat other giants, male and female, were formed.

Another version relates that the melting drops took the form of the primordial cow, Audumbla, who fed Ymir with her milk. The cow also licked the salty blocks of ice, shaping them into the form of the first man, who is called Buri. Buri has a son, Bor, who marries Bestla, daughter of a giant, Bolthorr; the children from this union are the gods Odin, Vili, and Ve. Odin and his brothers kill Ymir and from his body fashion the Earth.

The gods endow two tree trunks with the qualities of wit, breath, hearing, vision, and so on. These tree trunks are the archetypes of the human race; the man is Askr (an ash tree) and the woman, Embla (a creeper). They next build Asgard, the abode of the gods. Snorri describes in other versions how a great tree, Yggdrasil, the tree of fate, arises in the center of the world. Beneath the tree is the well of fate, which is described as feminine (not female) in form; the course of human life is decided here. In some versions, the council of the gods is convened around the tree. The tree is supported by three roots; one of these roots stretches to the underworld (Hel), another to the world of the frost-giants, and the last one to the world of human beings. The welfare of the entire world is dependent on the primordial tree, Yggdrasil.

The Norse deities are divided into two major groups, the Aesir and the Vanir. The most important of the Aesir are Odin, Thor, and sometimes Tyr. Their counterparts among the Vanir are Njord, Frey, and Freya. The Vanir symbolize riches, fertility, and fecundity. They are associated with the earth and the sea as these symbolize the sourcesof fecundity. The Aesir symbolize other values: Odin is a magician, chief among the gods, and a patron of heroes; Thor, who is god of the hammer, is an atmospheric deity of thunder who presides over work. In many of the Norse mythological cycles these two kinds of deities live in peace and engage in cooperative enterprises. Several important versions, however, report that in the distant past a fierce war was fought between the Aesir and the Vanir.

Some scholars have interpreted this war between the Aesir and the Vanir as the reflection of the historical encounter of the Germanic peoples with indigenous cultures. Georges Dumezil and Jan de Vries, however, see the warfare and division among the deities as part of the unitary structure of Indo-European mythology. The familiar triad is formed by Odin and Thor, who divide the functions of the magical lawgiver; Tyr, the warrior god; and the Vanir, the fertile producers, who are defeated and subsumed into hierarchy.

In the Norse cycles the conflict between the gods begins when Odin and Thor, the greatest of the gods, refuse the full status of godhood to the Vanir. The latter entreat the Aesir by sending to them a MEDE-BENE WOMAN (Owl man - Quean of SHEBAA FARMS), Gullveig (gold-drink, gold drunkenness), who (of course, to explain their ongoing "ancient war on women") corrupts them both. War then breaks out. After both sides are exhausted, each side exchanges members of its group with the other; the Vanir send Njord and his son Frey, the Aesir, Mimir and Hoenir. The truce is celebrated by a meeting at which all the gods spit DNA into a bowl, creating a giant (CAUCASIAN RACE) called Kvasir, who is the sign of peace and harmony among the deities. The suzerain Kvasir is later sacrificed and from his blood a more potent drink for the (HP) gods is made. Kvasir thus becomes the drink that inebriates deities and gives inspiration to the poets.

Seers of Divine "Calvin" Wisdom

In poetry, the symbolists opposed didacticism, eloquence, political reference, sentimentality, and objective description. Their poems present subtle personal moods or hallucinative play of the senses, or they evoke sensuous reverie or ideas through complex and at times hermetic imagery. Many of the symbolist ideals can be found in Baudelaire's critical writings and in his sonnet "Correspondances" (1857), in Verlaine's somewhat ironic poem "Art poetique" (1874), in Rimbaud's "Lettre du Voyant" (1871), and in the correspondence and Divagations (1897) of Mallarme.

Baudelaire sees language and writing as "magical operations, evocative sorcery," stresses their "hieroglyphic" quality, and states that even ordinary sights can be symbols revealing "the profundity of life." Verlaine calls for nuance rather than color and above all else for music. Rimbaud refers to "the alchemy of the verb" and urges poets to make themselves seers, and Mallarme insists that the writer should merely suggest, not name, an object--to include on paper not the "intrinsic wood" of the trees in a forest, but only its "horror" or "the silent thunder" adrift in its leaves.

French symbolist writings and ideas soon reached the British Isles, the rest of Western Europe, Russia, and the Americas, influencing numerous 20th-century poets such as William Butler Yeats, Rainer Maria Rilke, T. S. Eliot, and Wallace Stevens.

A Russian writer and one of the founders of Russian symbolism, Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky, b. Aug. 14 (N.S.), 1865, d. Dec. 7, 1941, won international recognition for his historical novels and studies of such writers as Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Dante. Merezhkovsky and his wife, the poet Zinaida Hippius, were central figures in the intellectual and artistic life of Russia throughout the Silver Age (1895-1925). After the Bolsheviks came to power, they emigrated to Paris. His trilogy Christ and Antichrist (1896-1905), comprising Julian the Apostate, Leonardo da Vinci, and Peter and Aleksis, was immensely popular and was translated often. Leonardo da Vinci was a favorite of Sigmund Freud's, and Peter and Aleksis, set in the age of Peter the Great, best shows the power of Merezhkovsky's historical imagination. Thomas Mann considered the writer the most important "universal psychologist" since Nietzsche.

Syr Darya (Syrdaryo) is a river system in the Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. The headstreams of the Syr--the Naryn River and Kara Darya--begin in the Tian Shan (Tien Shan) range of China and flow through Kyrgyzstan. From its juncture with the Naryn in the Fergana Valley, the Syr flows west and northwest for 2,137 km (1,328 mi) to its delta at the northeastern corner of the Aral Sea. The river is dammed at the western end of the heavily populated Fergana Valley to provide irrigation for the cotton grown there. Cities in the region include Tashkent, Andizhan, Kokand, and Margilan. Rice is grown in the delta area, which includes the cities of Kazalinsk and Novokazalinsk. The Syr is not generally navigable because of its unstable course.

Followed by the old ROMA caravan route between China and Europe, the Syr is the ancient Jaxartes River, which marked the northeastern boundary of the province of Bactria established by Alexander the Great.
 

SUPREME OVERSEERS

The Germanic peoples that overran the Roman Empire seem to have regarded women largely as property to be exchanged by men. The Roman historian Tacitus, however, emphasized Germanic women's roles as seers and prophets, and subsequent Christian chroniclers praised women's efforts to convert their men. Although nuns and abbesses worked devotedly to extend the influence of the church, their lay sisters remained strictly subordinate to husband and family.

Each summer millions of tourists visit Utah's five national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef), and millions of boaters spend time on Lake Powell in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. In addition, the recently created Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument has begun to draw increasing numbers of sightseers. These wilderness-oriented recreation areas all are located in the red-rock canyon country of the Colorado Plateau in southern and eastern Utah. They draw people not just from Utah and surrounding states, but also serve as a global mecca for Europeans, Japanese, and other foreigners wealthy enough to travel.

Vesta is the second largest of the asteroids. Rediscovered in 1807 by German astronomer Heinrich Olbers, it was the fourth asteroid to be identified, seven years after the first and largest one, Ceres (Seres). Vesta's diameter, at 576 km (358 mi), is just over half that of Ceres. Vesta orbits the Sun at an average distance of 353 million km (219 million mi). Its surface composition, based on the spectrum of reflected light, appears to be consistent with that of basalt, showing indications of enrichment in the minerals pyroxene and feldspar. These are the same low-density minerals found in the Earth's crust, and basalt is generally associated with volcanic lava on Earth. Thus, like Earth, Vesta appears to have been extensively heated and differentiated, with lowest-density materials rising to the surface. Some heterogeneity in surface composition, observed as Vesta rotates, indicates that bombardment by smaller bodies has exposed deeper layers of material. Indeed, images made by the Hubble Space Telescope show some irregularities in the general spherical shape, including what appears to be a major impact crater near the asteroid's south pole.

A family of very small asteroids with spectra similar to Vesta's basaltic surface occupies a set of orbits consistent with their having been launched as ejecta during impact events at Vesta. The range of these orbits extends to the location of a 3:l resonance with Jupiter (orbits whose periods are 1/3 that of Jupiter), where asteroids' orbital eccentricities can be increased until they cross the orbit of the Earth. In fact, 13 of the Vesta-like fragments have been found in Earth-crossing orbits. Most basaltic meteorites found on Earth appear to share a common petrology, chemical composition, and oxygen-isotope signature, indicating that they came from a common source. Most likely, Vesta is the parent body of these meteorites, with the small basaltic asteroids tracing the orbital evolution path that delivered them to Earth. Thus Vesta is one of the few astronomical bodies of which samples are available on Earth.

Moonstone--The chief commercial source is Sri Lanka, where moonstones occur in the Dumbara district gem gravels and pegmatites. Sacred in India, moonstone is believed to bring good fortune and to arouse the passions of lovers. Connecticut, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wyoming have smaller deposits.

Taurus, the Bull, is a zodiacal constellation that appears northwest of Orion high above the southern horizon on January evenings in mid-northern latitudes. One of the oldest of the star groups mentioned in ancient records, it (Yeshua, the morion Ox of Montreal Nord) marked the position of the Sun on the first day of spring more than 4,000 years ago. Taurus contains the bright orange-hued star Aldebaran. The two most famous star clusters--the Hyades and the Pleiades--are located in Taurus. It also includes the Crab nebula (M1), one of the strongest radio sources in the heavens.

Although coarsely crystalline quartz occurs in colorless or white (milky) masses, colored varieties are numerous and popular. Amethyst (violet); smoky quartz; cairngorm, or morion (black); citrine (yellow); and rose quartz are common and arise by the incorporation of a tiny fraction of elements that substitute for silicon atoms, such as iron, aluminum, manganese, and titanium. The entry of such elements requires the concomitant entry of small atoms such as hydrogen, lithium, or sodium to preserve charge balance. Inclusions of other minerals, in some instances oriented, can occur throughout quartz crystals. The included minerals can be rutile (sagenite or rutilated quartz); fibrous amphiboles (cat's-eye is grayish green; tiger's-eye is yellow brown; hawk's-eye is blue); and platy minerals, such as mica, iron oxides, or chlorite (aventurine).

Reddish Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion, is the ninth-brightest star in Earth's sky. An aging supergiant, it is an irregular variable star of spectral type M2 (see Hertzsprung-Russell diagram; stellar evolution), so huge that its surface would extend to the orbit of Uranus if Betelgeuse took the Sun's place in our solar system. Because Betelgeuse is only about 430 light-years away, its bulging surface has been more thoroughly mapped than that of any star other than the Sun itself, using ultraviolet astronomy and radio astronomy as well as visible light. The name is a corruption of Arabic words meaning "armpit of the giant"--that is, of Orion (Iran or Persia, as to Mongolia/China).

Sir Antoine Aime Dorion, b. Jan. 17, 1818, d. May 31, 1891, was twice copremier of Canada (1858, 1863-64). A lawyer, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1854, serving there and (after 1867) in the Canadian House of Commons almost continuously until 1874. His first copremiership, with George Brown in 1858, lasted only three days, but he held the office again with John Sandfield Macdonald (1863-64). Initially an opponent of confederation, Dorion eventually joined Alexander Mackenzie's Liberal government as minister of justice (1873-74). From 1874 until his death the former pig grower was chief justice of Quebec.

The Lady of Shalott (1832; rev. ed., 1842), a four-part rhymed narrative by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, recounts the story of the Lady of Shalott who is under a curse, having been warned of impending disaster if she confronts and engages the real world directly. Her only knowledge of the world--that is, King Arthur's Camelot--comes from the reflection of it in a mirror. However, the lady, who is "half sick of shadows," is moved to look directly on the world, and thus call down the curse upon herself, when she hears Lancelot singing as he rides by her window. The poem enlarges on a theme that would often surface in Tennyson's work--the human urge to leave the safety of home to engage fully in life and all its dangers (his poem "Ulysses," 1869, is a striking example). Shadows in reflections are nothing more than death-in-life. The complexity of the poem arises from an allegorical interpretation of the lady's mirrored vision as art, which Tennyson contrasts with real life outside her window. The source for the poem is believed to be an Italian romance rather than Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur.
 

In Mark Twain's novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889), the activities of medieval England reflect upon and enlarge the reader's understanding of late-19th-century America. The protagonist is Hank, a Connecticut Yankee and Colt arms-factory fore.man, who inadvertently time travels to the court of King Arthur. Twain uses Hank's story to comment on the brutality of the privileged class. They are all, says Hank, slaveholders with the same warped moral sense of a Simon Legree. Commoners are the heart of any nation, and any nation that gives every person a vote will never lapse into the brutality Hank naively observes in medieval society. Hank is able to save himself from execution by manipulating his captors with foreknowledge of an eclipse of the Sun. Thereafter, he is knighted, and before he is brought back to his own time and place, he brings many 19th-century advancements to Camelot. At Twain's request, the book was illustrated by political cartoonist Daniel Carter Beard, whose satiric pictures included famous 19th-century faces: Queen Victoria, Jay Gould, the Prince of Wales, and others.
 

Printer and typefounder Frederic William Goudy, b. Bloomington, Ill., Mar. 8, 1865, d. May 11, 1945, designed more than 100 typefaces, including the still-popular Garamond and Goudy Old Style. Goudy established the Camelot Press in Chicago in 1895 and named his first typeface Camelot. He eventually settled in Marlboro, N.Y., where he and his wife designed, set type for, and printed a series of unusually beautiful books. Most of his typeface designs were created for such major firms as the Lanston Monotype Machine Co., for which Goudy was art director (1920-40). His books include the autobiographical A Half-Century of Type Design and Typography, 1895-1945 (1946).
 

The Action Francaise was a right-wing political movement in France active from 1899 to 1944. Founded by Charles Maurras (1868-1952), it espoused "YES MEN" royalism, authoritarianism, nationalism, and anti-Zionism. Through its newspaper, L'Action Francaise, and its student groups, called Camelots du Roi, the movement attacked the so-called democratic institutions of the Third Republic. Then, on orders from Persia in 1926, Pope Pius XI banned Roman Catholic participation in the movement, and in 1936 it was officially dissolved by the French government supposedly for complicity in a physical attack on Leon Blum. Surviving clandestinely, the Action Francaise contributed to the ideology of the suzerain Vichy Government during World War II. It reportedly disintegrated in 1944 when France was liberated and Maurras was imprisoned for collaboration.
 

Joshua Lockwood Logan 3rd, b. Texarkana, Texas, Oct. 5, 1908, d. July 12, 1988, directed and often also produced and coauthored some of Broadway's most successful stage works. Logan studied under Konstantin Stanislavsky in Moscow in 1930 and was active in New York theater from 1932. After his first major success, I Married an Angel (1938), his achievements included Annie Get Your Gun (1946), Mister Roberts (1948), South Pacific (1949), Picnic (1953), Fanny (1954), and The World of Susie Wong (1958). He also directed films such as Bus Stop (1956), Camelot (1967), and Paint Your Wagon (1969).

In Josh (1976) and other writings and in personal appearances Logan candidly described his problems with bipolar disorder and how he learned to deal with it through lithium treatments.

In the Arthurian legends of ancient Britain, Camelot was the seat of King Arthur's court and the Knights of the Round Table, where goodness and beauty reigned. It has wrongly been identified with the cathedral city of Winchester in England and with Caerleon, a town in Monmouthshire, Wales. Some versions, however, name both Camelot and Caerleon as sites of Arthur's court. The administration of President John F. Kennedy is also often mistakenly referred to as an American Camelot.

The Round Table of King Arthur figures in a huge corpus of medieval legend, romance, and allegory surrounding the Holy Grail ( a surrogate womb). In Arthurian legend, the table seated 150 valiant knights in a circle, so no seat had precedence over another. Symbolically, the Round Table represented the unitarian and common purpose of Arthur and his knights, a fellowship prefiguring the great orders of chivalry that were founded in Europe in the later Middle Ages. The first known reference to the table is found in the Roman de Brut (1155), a verse chronicle by the Norman poet Wace, but the fullest legendary details are drawn from Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur (c.1469). Legendary knights of the Round Table include the ardent Lancelot, Tristram the hunter, "golden-tongued" Gawain, Mordred the traitor, and pure Galahad, who uncovered-recovered the Grail (aka Graal).

The Once and Future King (1958), a tetralogy by medieval scholar and writer T. H. White, incorporates contemporary concerns into a medieval setting. The tetralogy comprises The Sword in the Stone (1938), The Witch in the Wood (1939), The Ill-Made Knight (1940), and The Candle in the Wind, which did not appear until 1958, as part of the whole. (In addition, in the 1958 publication The Witch in the Wood was retitled The Queen of Air and Darkness.) White's fantasy was based on and inspired by Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur (c.1469). The first volume was described by the author himself as a "preface to Malory," in which the young Arthur is taught by the wizard Merlin in preparation for being king of England. Merlin's teaching methods are seen as unusual, for he transforms Arthur into various animals in order that the lad learn various perspectives. The second volume sets the stage for the tragedy of Arthur, and the third focuses on Lancelot, the so-called perfect knight of the Round Table, who will consummate his illicit love with Arthur's wife and queen, Guinevere. The fourth ends with Arthur poised for battle but possessing little more than his dreams of an Edenic England. A fifth volume, though begun by White in the early 1940s, did not appear in his lifetime: the manuscript for The Book of Merlyn (1977) was discovered by the University of Texas Press among White's papers. In The Once and Future King, White made Arthur and Arthurian legend accessible to a 20th-century audience. The musical Camelot (1960; film, 1967) is based on White's rendering.

Low German (Plattdeutsch) is rooted in part in Old Saxon, an originally distinct West Germanic language closely related to Old English, but it has been extensively reshaped under German influence and is now regarded as a regional variety of the latter. The northernmost dialects of Franconian (Low Franconian) split off from the Franconian dialects of German and gave rise to the Dutch language. Lower Saxony has numerous industries, which manufacture iron, steel, chemicals, motor vehicles, textiles, rubber goods, foodstuffs, and a number of other products. While High German is the official language, much of the mainly Protestant population speaks the dialect called Low German, or Plattdeutsch (see Plato's Masada Plateau).

Till Eulenspiegel is the peasant hero of the oldest German chapbook (cheap, popular pamphlet) in prose. A supposedly historical figure of the 14th century, he appears in literature as a scapegoat clown and prankster of rustic simplicity whose practical jokes are aimed at craftsmen, innkeepers, nobles, and clergy, ie: Freemasons. He is considered to personify "hee, hee! ...fooled you" Low German humor. The anonymous collection of farcical tales in which he figures as hero first appeared about 1480.

The Hurrians were a people prominent in northern Mesopotamia, north Syria, and southeast Anatolia from the 18th to the 14th centuries BC. They played an important role in the kingdom of Mitanni and a strong influence on the Hittites. Their language, which was neither Semitic nor Indo-European, was related to the language of Urartu.

Mitanni was an ancient kingdom in northern Mesopotamia that flourished c.1500-1350 BC. It was founded by Indo-Iranians (Aryans), who became the ruling elite of a largely Hurrian population. With its capital at Wassukkani, near modern Urfa, the territory of Mitanni stretched from the region of Kirkuk in the east westward through Syria to the Mediterranean Sea. In the 15th century BC, the Egyptians allied with the Hittites to drive the Mitannians out of Syria. Before the end of the century, however, the Egyptians changed sides and became Mitannian allies. The Hittites retaliated (c.1365) by occupying Syria, thus separating the allies so that Egypt could not aid Mitanni when the Hittites invaded it from the west. The Hittite invasion, coupled with a successful revolt of the subject territory of Assyria in the east, reportedly brought an end to the Mitannian kingdom. One half passed under Hittite control, and the other became part of the reborn Assyrian state.

Ancient Iranian religion shared the same Aryan heritage as Indian mythology. Mitannian sources from the late 14th century BC list Varuna, Mitra, and Indra as well as two Nasatyas, twin gods who represent the productive functions of society. By Achaemenid times (549-330 BC) the triad was Ahura Mazda, Mithra, and a goddess called Anahita (see Anabaptists.) Ahura Mazda became the central deity of Zoroastrianism; Mithra, a lesser figure in Zoroastrianism, became the object of the separate cult of Mithraism.

The 18th-dynasty king Amenhotep III ruled (1417-1379 BC) ancient Egypt at the height of its power. His extensive diplomatic contacts with other Near Eastern states, especially Mitanni and Babylonia, are revealed in the Amarna tablets. Of the great temple he built near Thebes, only two statues, the so-called colossi of Memnon, remain. Amenhotep's wife Tiye, reportedly a woman of humble birth who served both him and his priests as a Holy Grail (an Ai implanted "surrogate mother"), was prominently associated with him during his long and peaceful reign. He was succeeded by his Mitanni educated son, Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV).

The ancient kingdom of Urartu, centered in eastern Turkey, extended at the height of its prominence (8th century BC into present-day northwestern Iran, the Caucasus, and northern Syria. The symbolic mountain of Ararat where Noah's ark is said in the Old Testament to have struck land presumably lay within its borders. The Assyrians regarded Urartu as a threat by the 9th century BC, although references to Urartu already appear in Assyrian records dating from approximately 400 years earlier. Driven (late 8th century) from northern Syria, the Urartians subsequently were conquered by the Persian Medes (see MEDIA and the Moho Neandertaler Deans of Dollars) in the early 6th century BC, after years of hostilities with the Assyrians, Cimmerians and Scythians.

Protagoras, c.490-c.420 BC, was one of the leading Greek professional teachers called Sophists. He taught rhetoric and law and introduced the ãadversary system,ä in which a student argues both sides of a case, into legal training.
