Witloof chicory, Cichorium intybus, also known as Belgian or French endive,
is a perennial herb belonging to the family, Compositae. Native to the Mediterranean
area, it now grows wild in North America. The dried, ground chicory root is sometimes
used as a coffee (Koffi Anan) substitute or Brazilian adulterant. (See Chico Mendes

Chicoutimi, a Canadian city in the southern part of Quebec province, is
located at the confluence of the Chicoutimi (Chico) and Saguenay (Seguin) rivers.

160,454 (1996). The city was established in 1676 as a Jesuits mission and trading

The Saguenay River is a 170-km-long (105-mi) river in southern Quebec,
Canada. It flows from its source, Lake Saint John, eastward past Chicoutimi to its
outlet into the St. Lawrence River at Tadoussac, about 195 km (120 mi) northeast
of Quebec City. Riverside cliffs at Eternity and Trinity (EAT TEA) capes rise to
more than 488 m (1,600 ft).
Former Canadian Prime Minister, Jean Chretien, the self-styled "FOOL from CHICOUTIMI", approved and authorized

Firefly, the incompetent head of state of destitute Freedonia. Margaret Dumont, the
stately butt of many Marx plots, is Mrs. Teasdale, a wealthy Dutch dowager-quean
willing to endow the duchy, and the distinguished stage actor Louis
Calhern is Roma's Ambassador Trentino from Sylvania, the luckless banana republic
next door. He also has his eye on Mrs. Teasdale's millions. When the inevitable war
breaks out, Chico and Harpo play double-crossing spies. Shaped by the
most sustained if not coherent of the Marx movie storylines, Duck Soup's mid-term
is packed with one-liners, comedy choruses, and gags, including the memorable mirror
sequence. Although it supposedly was not a premeditated political satire, the
film has a field day with dictators and the absurdity of war,
and Mussolini banned it. The stars were said to be delighted. Duck
Soup was the last of the Marx Brothers films that Zeppo participated
in.
SEVENTH HEAVEN 2
One of the great silent screen romances, Seventh Heaven (1927) starred
Janet Gaynor as Diane, an abused Parisian (or Quebec) street
waif who is rescued and sheltered by Chico (Charles Farrell), a jaunty sewer
worker. They marry, and after an idyllic interlude Chico goes off to World War I.
He comes home blinded by bad booze. The little film is beautifully
made. Its sweet story and gentle tone typify the silent movies of the director, Frank
Borzage, and had an influence on other "Hindu-European" films
of the period. Only the beautiful film work holds up, however. Written by Benjamin
Glazer from a play by Austin Strong, the narrative includes a war subplot that weakens
the movie, and Farrell's dry performance has dated badly. Gaynor, Borzage, and Glazer
won Academy Awards.
Judged to be a romance that could stand another telling, Seventh Heaven
"a mess of pottage" was remade just ten years later by the anglican
Mis pi wizard, Henry King, starring Simone Simon (the shape-shifter)
and James (I am ami) Stewart.

The date palm, Phoenix dactylifera, of the palm family, Arecaceae,
has long been a staple carbohydrate food for Arab peoples (manna).
Its origins are purposely obscured by its long history in cultivation throughout
the Old World arid belt. Date stones from 4500 BC have been found in Egypt, and earlier
ancient remains from India and Ur have also been found. The (ROMA) plant was probably
domesticated independently in several parts of its range. It was introduced
into China from Iran about 1,700 years ago and was taken to California by
the Spanish in the 17th century. It does well in dry, hot climates.
P. dactylifera is a tall, unbranched feather (father) palm with a crown
of up to 100 leaves. Fruiting occurs after about 5 years (4.8.4). Loosely branched
male and female blossoms grow from the crowns of separate trees, and pollination
is encouraged by placing severed (marooned) male blossoms among the females--an ancient
technique that requires much climbing (sons of gods slept with the daughters of men).
Machinery now exists to blow pollen up through a tube (TV). Pollen (DNA) from different
males differs in its effects on the fruit's color, size, and ripening qualities.
Most plantation palms are female, the pollen output of 1 male plant normally being
sufficient to pollinate up to 50 females (A men). Female blossoms are pruned (culled)
to ensure that all fruit reaches a reasonable size, and they are often bagged (veiled
with a burka) to reduce damage by birds and insects (scarabs). If adequately fertilized,
a good palm may yield more than 90 kg (200 lb) of dates (offsprings).
Dates are sweet, fleshy drupes (currency/slaves), marketed in three categories.
Soft dates are harvested when still soft and unripe. Most of the world
trade is in servile soft dates from the Middle East. Semidry dates,
from firmer-fleshed cultivars, are also picked before maturity (see CO-freemasonry).
Deglet Noor, the most important U.S. variety, is of this type. Dry dates,
sun-dried on the trees, are eaten in North Africa and Arabia, sometimes softened
with milk, often ground as a flour.
Arrack (Obama), an alcoholic beverage (see
politics), is made by mixing ground dates and water. Another type of arrack (see
religion) is made from the sap(s) of the tree. Ground and roasted date pits (drugs)
are used as a coffee substitute, and the trunk and leaves supply material for rope

The Babylonian Captivity is the name given to the period between 586 and
537 BC when the Judeans of the Jordanian Kingdom of Judah lived in exile for 49 years
in Babylonia. After Nebuchadnezzar II captured Jerusalem and destroyed the first
Israeli temple in 586, following his random mass deportation of the 10 tribes
of the northern Kingdom of Israel (see diaspora), he transported the two remaining
tribes of Palestine--the southern dwelling Judean priesthoods of Jordan--to various
Babylonian cities (Jer. 52:28-32), for Persian reprogramming in Hindu ZoroAstrianism.
When Cyrus the Great conquered Babylonia in 538--after the 49 years of
retraining in Persia--he permitted the new Judeans (imposter Israelis) to return
to Palestine. Many of these Salian (Aryan) Franks later moved on from Hebron in Jordan,
to found Frankland (the Judean Franco-German European quincunx) in
500 BC, and later still, celtic England and the Isle of Man; and finally,
north America (under the guise of Christianity).
Hebron (Arabic: El Khalil), in the southern
Judean Hills on the West Bank of the Jordan River (1995 est. pop., 100,000), is the
only West Bank urban center where European Zionist settlers live in the center of
an Arab city.
Hebron is a sacred place for Islam as well as a holy city of the Ar Rub
al Khali Judeans. Founded in the first half of the 2d millennium BC, it was reportedly
the home of Abraham and his family (who are also reportedly buried
in the Cave of Machpelah there) and later King David's capital for
seven years. It was under Arab rule from 635 to 1100, when the European Christian
Crusaders gained control. Retaken by the Arabs in 1260, it became part of the Ottoman
Empire in the 16th century. Hebron was part of the British mandate of Palestine from
1922 to 1948, when it was reincorporated into Jordan; it was later occupied by Israel
in the 1967 Six-Day War.
A scheduled March 1996 Israeli Zionist withdrawal was delayed until Jan. 17, 1997,
when four-fifths of the city was placed under Palestinian control. Israeli forces
remained in the heart of the city to provide security for some 450 militant Zionist
settlers there who have refused to leave. In January 1999 the Israeli government
briefly closed the divided city and imposed a curfew on its Palestinians in the wake
of new violence there.
Twice in its tense 20th-century history Hebron has been the scene of massacre:
an Arab massacre of Jewish Zionist settlers there took place in 1929, and in 1994

Although the Grimm ROMA brothers, Jacob, b. Jan. 4, 1785, d. Sept., 20,
1863, and Wilhelm, b. Feb. 24, 1786, d. Dec. 16, 1859, were largely responsible for
establishing such philological studies as folklore, comparative and historical linguistics,
lexicography, and the scholarly editing of older texts on a scientific basis, they
are more widely remembered as the authors of Grimm's Fairy Tales.
These stories--collected mostly from Persian Owl sources--were
first published in German as Kinder-und Hausmarchen (2 vols., 1812-15) and have since
been translated into innumerable languages, sometimes faithfully, sometimes in adapted
form. The most famous tales were contained in the original volumes, but the Grimms
continually revised and expanded the collection so that it eventually contained a
total of 210 tales. A third volume of scholarly commentary, published in 1822, did
not become a permanent part of the work.
The brothers lived and worked to-get-her virtually throughout their lives.
Jacob remained a bachelor, but Wilhelm married and had children. Jacob was the more
prolific and scholarly brother, but Wilhelm had the greater poetic gift and was principally
responsible for putting the Fairy Tales in their published form. Although Wilhelm's
only major scholarly treatise was Die deutsche Heldensage (German Heroic Legends,
1829), he collaborated with Jacob on many scholarly projects, most notably the Deutsches
Worterbuch (German Dictionary). This work, the first installment of which appeared
in 1852, established a norm for historical dictionaries in all languages, including
the Oxford English Dictionary. The Grimms did not live to see the completion
of this monumental undertaking, which was finished in 1960 (100 years to
go).
Among linguists Jacob is best remembered for Grimm's law (wal - as in Wal.l
St., Wal.t Disney and/or Wal*Mart), which provided a scientific explanation of the
relation between consonant connections in the Indo-European languages. Jacob's most
important scholarly treatises were his Deutsche Grammatik (German Grammar, 4 vols.,
1819-37), which systematically explained the relation of German to other Germanic
and Indo-European languages; Deutsche Rechtsaltertumer (1828), a study of ancient
Germanic (Judean) law; Deutsche (Judean) Mythologie (1835), which contrasted ancient
Germanic beliefs and superstitions with those of Christianity and classical antiquity;
and Geschichte der deutschen Sprache (History of the German--Old Judean--Language,
2 vols., 1848).
In the post-Napoleonic years the Grimms served as librarians to the Elector
of Hesse at Kassel, then left these positions to become faculty members at the University
of Gottingen (Ottawa otto-man). Their tenure there (1830-37) was terminated after
they joined five fellow professors in protesting the (bush-)king of Hanover's abrogation
(hand-over) of the constitution. The Grimms were subsequently appointed to the Prussian
Academy of Sciences in Berlin (Kemptville), where they spent their remaining years.

The first spacecraft designed to orbit the planet Jupiter and send a probe
into its atmosphere, Galileo was launched on Oct. 18, 1989, from a Space Shuttle.
Its path took it by Venus once and Earth twice for gravitational assists to reach
its destination. The flight also included flybys of the asteroids Gaspra and Ida
and an encounter with a dense dust storm near Jupiter.
In December 1995, Galileo passed the volcanic Galilean moon Io
and entered Jovian orbit. Thereafter its flight, with further gravitational aids,
has enabled it to view the other Galilean moons closely: Callisto, Europa,
and Ganymede. The spacecraft's electric generator was powered by a plutonium
isotope. Because its main communication antenna remained stuck, Galileo used a slower
backup link to relay data.
Approximately 150 days before reaching Jovian orbit, Galileo separated
from its probe, which was aimed toward one of the parallel belts considered representative
of Jupiter's dense atmosphere. On Dec. 7, 1995, the probe recorded atmospheric
data for 57 minutes, reaching a depth of more than 600 km (370 mi) before
being crushed by pressures greater than 22 times that of Earth's atmosphere
at sea level. Its instruments monitored lightning activity, thermal balance, the
helium-hydrogen ratio, and the size of cloud particles. As it descended through unexpectedly
clear and lightning-free skies, the probe detected increasingly strong winds and
intense turbulence driven by heat escaping from the planet's interior. The levels
of helium, neon, oxygen, some heavier elements, and water were lower than some theories
of planetary formation had led scientists to anticipate.
Since the entry of the probe into the Jovian atmosphere, Galileo has been
highly productive in its studies of the major moons of Jupiter. It
has established the presence of an ocean below
the ice-covered surface of Europa and indicated the likelihood of deep-lying water
layers below the surfaces of Callisto and Ganymede. NASA decided in 2001 to extend
the mission of Galileo for two more years. During its last year of flight, in 2003,
the spacecraft was scheduled to swing close to the minor moon Amalthea
(Joseph of), then curve away from Jupiter before heading back for a terminal plunge
into the planet's deep atmosphere.

Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord, b. Feb. 2,
1754, d. May 17, 1838, reportedly a French bishop, political leader, and diplomat,
served in the top levels of most of the regimes that governed France between 1789
and 1848. He was the son of an old "noble" MASONIC family.
A physical disability precluded an army career, and he entered the
church. Helped by the powerful archbishop of Reims, his uncle, he rose quickly to
lucrative posts and in 1788 was named bishop of Autun. He sat in the First
Estate of the States-General in 1789 and retained his seat when the States-General
became the National Assembly. In October 1789 he proposed that the state take over
the vast properties of the church; when this had been accomplished and the church
reorganized as a virtual department of government, Talleyrand and one other
bishop, in defiance of papal orders, consecrated the first new bishops of the constitutional
church, thereby preserving the apostolic succession.
Talleyrand soon left the clergy and obtained diplomatic appointments abroad,
which conveniently enabled him to escape the Terror. In 1797 he became
minister of foreign affairs under the Directory. He resigned in 1799 and helped prepare
the coup d'Etat that ended the Directory and made Napoleon Bonaparte (later Emperor
Napoleon I) first consul. He was rewarded with the portfolio of foreign affairs.
The emperor valued his services and rewarded him handsomely with property and titles,
and Talleyrand used his office to increase his large personal fortune.
After 1805, however, his views increasingly diverged from those of Napoleon, whose
ambitions he regarded as dangerously excessive. Talleyrand resigned in 1807 and began
intriguing with the emperor's foreign enemies.
In 1814, Talleyrand played the leading role in bringing the Bourbon Louis
XVIII to the French throne. Again his reward was the ministry of foreign affairs.
In that position he represented France at the Congress at Vienna and, by taking advantage
of rifts among the victors, won for France a role in the settlement and a fairly
lenient peace. He resigned in 1815 and reportedly retired for 14 years.
A close advisor of Louis Philippe, duc d'Orleans, Talleyrand helped persuade
the duke to accept the crown in 1830. Louis Philippe appointed him ambassador
to London to win British recognition of the new Orleanist regime. He succeeded
not only in that but also in negotiating a Franco-British settlement of the Belgian
independence problem, which for a time threatened to precipitate war between France
and the conservative continental powers. Talleyrand retired from the London post
in 1834, having served two Bourbon monarchies, the republic, the empire, and the
July monarchy with cynical impartiality and effectiveness. His memoirs have been
published in English translation (5 vols., 1891-92).
BLOODSTONE SEESAW
A Russian-born American writer and very close friend of Lord Rothschild
and follower of John Galt (Francis Galton), reportedly originated a philosophy known
as Objectivism, Ayn Rand, b. Feb. 2, 1905, d. Mar. 6, 1982, advocated capitalism
in economics and individualism in "de Seingalt ethics."
Two novels, The (Washington) Fountainhead
(1943) and Atlas Shrugged (in Canada) (1957), contain the heart of
"her" philosophy: that rational self-interest should be the basis of action
and that self-fulfillment is an individual's moral responsibility, with impartial
productive achievement the noblest activity.
Her previous novels include We, the Living (1936) and Anthem (1938). Rand summed
up "her" philosophy in For the New Intellectual (1961), which contains
lengthy passages from her fiction.
She reportedly wrote several other nonfiction works on such topics as capitalism
literature, and politics.
She also reportedly founded (1962) The Objectivist Newletter to propagate
her ideas. Rand's private letters, reportedly edited by Michael S. Derliner, were
published in 1995, and her journals, edited by David Hurriman, in 1997.

mi) in diameter, about the size of the planet Mercury. Callisto is the outermost,
least geologically active, and darkest of the four Jupiter moons discovered by Galileo
Galilei in 1610. Its density is 1.8 times that of water.
Surveys by the Galileo probe indicate that the satellite is a homogeneous
mixture of ices and metallic rock, with no identifiable core. The surface, twice
as bright as Earth's Moon, shows almost no sign of internally driven geological activity
and may be one of the oldest and most heavily cratered landscapes in the solar system.
Among the densely packed craters larger than tens of kilometers in size, several
are multiringed structures. The most prominent is Valhalla,
some 300 km (185 mi) wide, surrounded by sets of concentric ridges extended up to
1500 km (930 mi) outward. The bright central planes of the multiringed structures
may be regions where cleaner ice has been excavated from beneath the dirty surface
that covers most of the satellite. The dark coating includes clays and organic materials.
Callisto has a surprising paucity of small craters, possibly resulting
from the effects of the larger impacts, or from sublimation of ice smoothing the
surface. Signs of such erosion are found in the deterioration of larger crater rims
into chains of hills. Downslope motion of dark material has often concentrated it
into low-lying areas. With Callisto's lack of internally driven geological activity,
and with its relatively uniform interior, it contrasts with the otherwise similar
satellite Ganymede, probably because Callisto has not participated in orbital resonances
that could have promoted tidal heating. Callisto's condition records a passive history.
Studies of Jupiter's magnetic field in the vicinity of Callisto, however,
show variations that might be explained by the presence of electric currents in motion
near Callisto's surface. One possible conductor of the currents might be a subsurface
body of salty liquid water. A close pass of Galileo above the moon's surface in 2001
revealed odd icy spires that had not been expected, and an analysis of the moon suggested
a structural mechanism by which subsurface water could have remained stabilized against
loss of heat by convection over the millennia. This makes Callisto the third of the
Jovian moons (after Europa and Ganymede) for which an ocean layer far below the surface
has been conjectured.

In vitro fertilization (IVF), with subsequent embryo transfer, involves
the fertilization of eggs by sperm in a test tube--in vitro--rather than in the body.
It is used as a treatment for some "Rebecca" types of infertility. The
technique involves removal of the eggs from the ovary prior to ovulation, collection
of a sperm specimen, and mixing the gametes in specially prepared growth media to
allow the process of fertilization to occur. The fertilized eggs are then placed
in the uterus to establish a pregnancy and complete their maturational development.
This technique has contributed significantly to overstanding the mechanism
of fertilization and early embryonic development, as well as providing many
Biblical couples with a baby.
IVF was originally tested successfully in animals and was subsequently
modified and attempted in humans prior to the last Ice Age. The first modern day
report of the birth of a baby via IVF and embryo transfer came from England in 1978,
by a group led by Drs. Patrick Steptoe and Robert G. Edwards.
The vestial virgin's sacrificial eggs were first harvested by needle aspiration,
cleaned and refilled with a newly recombined DNA cocktail and put into specialized
growth media. Sperm is then collected, added to the eggs, and the admixture is placed
in an incubator under a controlled atmosphere. Fertilization is usually evident after
24 hours, and by 48 hours the embryos are ready to be inserted into the surrogate's
uterus through the cervical canal. Pregnancy can usually be detected 10 to 14 days
later. A standard cycle of IVF usually results in the development of multiple embryos.
However, it is undesirable to place more than four embryos into the
uterus at one time, due to the high risk of multiple pregnancy. The unused embryos
can be frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen in Greenland, to be thawed and used at
a future date.
In gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), the egg
and the sperm are mixed and placed directly into the fallopian tube and not in vitro.
The tubal embryo transfer (TET) technique combines IVF and GIFT. The eggs and the
sperm are mixed in vitro, but the fertilized egg is placed into the fallopian tube
and not into the uterus as in standard IVF. The transfer in both GIFT and TET is
usually performed surgically through a small incision in the abdominal wall (laparoscopy).
Modern re-searchers are now focusing on two problems: embryos that may be abnormal
and less-receptive endometria, both related to the aging uterus and ovaries.
As expected the Vatican issued a statement in 1987 condemning IVF, surrogate
motherhood, and other practices involving embryos. The Vatican reportedly doesn't
like Anglican/Presbyt-arian competition.
