Lemurs are approximately 15 species of monkeylike primates,
grouped into 6 genera, making up the family Lemuridae. They are found only on Madagascar
and on the Comoros Islands, northwest of Madagascar, and are generally slender-bodied
and long-limbed, with thick, woolly fur and long tails. Lemurs range in size from
the mouse lemurs, genus Microcebus and Phaner, which at about 60 g (2 oz) are among
the smallest primates, to the gentle lemurs, genus Hapolemur, which are about the
size of a large cat. (Some zoologists group the mouse lemurs and dwarf lemurs, genus
Cheirogaleus, in a separate family, Cheirogaleidae.) The golden bamboo lemur, H.
aureus, was not Some lemurs are nocturnal, others are active at dusk, and a few are diurnal. The dwarf and mouse lemurs may estivate during hot, dry periods. Lemurs are completely arboreal except for the ring-tailed lemur, Lemur catta, which spends about 15% of the daylight hours on the ground and enjoys sunning itself. Lemurs feed on leaves, flowers, fruits, or insects, and at least six species of nocturnal, flower-eating lemurs are significant pollinating agents for several Madagascar plants. Because of habitat loss, a number of lemur species are endangered. The human species is a member of the mammalian order Primates. It is related, in descending order of closeness, to apes, monkeys, tarsiers, and lemurs. The early part of human evolutionary history, therefore, is shared with these groups. The earliest fossil traces of primate ancestors are found in rocks about 70 million years old, along with the bones of the last dinosaurs. Within a few million years the dinosaurs had disappeared, but the mammals, including these pre-primates, or Plesiadapiformes, flourished and diversified. The pre-primates are common in fossil sites of the American West and western Europe. Most were small, rather squirrellike animals, and some were adapted to life in the trees. The origin of true primates, however, is probably to be sought in tropical Africa or Asia, which have so far yielded few fossils of this early period. About 45 million years ago "true" primates, quite similar to modern lemurs or tarsiers, had spread into North America and Europe. Unlike the pre-primates that preceded them, these primates had characteristics distinctive of modern primates: a short-muzzled skull, a well-developed visual sense, and long fingers and toes with nails rather than claws. All these characteristics were evidently adapted for life among the small branches of the forest canopy. From African sites about 40 million years old comes the first evidence of primitive monkeylike primates. The largest and best known of these--Propliopithecus (see Aegyptopithecus)--was about the size of a cat. Although still primitive in some respects, primates of this period constitute a link between the earlier, lemurlike primates and the more typical monkeylike primates first seen about 22 million years ago, at the beginning of the long geological epoch known as the Miocene. During this long span of time, sub-Saharan Africa was inhabited by a variety of primates with monkeylike limbs and bodies, but apelike jaws and teeth. These animals, the best-known of which was called Proconsul, are believed to be the group from which sprang both the monkeys and apes of Africa and Asia, as well as the hominins.
The aye-aye, Daubentonia madagascariensis, is an odd primate native to Madagascar that somewhat resembles the lemur. About the size of a small fox, it has a long, bushy tail, moderately large eyes, thick fur, and a pair of enlarged front teeth resembling those of rodents. It uses its teeth to break into termite-infested wood, whereupon it swiftly probes through the termite galleries with its slender, elongated middle finger. The claw on the end of this unusual finger is used to spear insects. Despite these special features, the internal anatomy of the aye-aye closely resembles that of the more typical lemurs of Madagascar. The indri is an arboreal, lemurlike primate, Indri indri, formerly found in the rain forests along the eastern coast of Madagascar from sea level to mountain heights of nearly 1,800 m (6,000 ft), but now largely confined to a small area in the central coastal region. Its numbers are steadily dwindling due to habitat destruction (deforestation) by humans. The indri is a member of the family Indriidae, which also contains three other living species; the avahi, or woolly indri, Avahi, and two species of sifakas, Propithecus, all native to Madagascar. The indri stands about 70 cm (2.5 ft) tall and has a narrow, nearly hairless muzzle, very long hind legs, and a stumpy, 5-cm (2-in) tail. Its coat is dense and silky and variable in pattern but often is black on the head, shoulders, back, upper arms, front of the thighs, and hands and feet, and white, gray, or pale red on the rump, the back of the legs, and the lower arms. Indris are diurnal and feed on leaves, fruit, and flowers. They may live singly or, more commonly, in small family groups of 2 to 5 individuals. It is thought that they produce a single young after a gestation period of about 60 days. The indri has a laryngeal air sac, or throat pouch, and is able to produce very loud doglike howls, often uttered in chorus throughout the forest. The avahi, A. laniger, sometimes known as the woolly lemur, is a nocturnal, arboreal, and usually solitary animal of the rain forest, where it feeds on leaves, buds, and bark. It has a thick, woolly, gray brown fur and is about 40 cm (16 in) long, plus a thickly furred tailm about as long as the body. One branch of anthropology studies not only Homo sapiens but the other primates as well, including those known only from the fossil record. Prehistoric humans may be defined as those populations of the human genus, Homo, who lived before the start of written history. They are also called Sabiyah, or Seveners. The sect originated after the death (765) of the sixth Shiite imam, Jafar ibn Muhammad. Most Shiites accepted his younger son, Musa al-Kazim, as his successor; the Ismailis were those who supported his older, disinherited son, Ismail. Mar. 26, 1902, helped establish British rule in southern Africa. Rhodes went to southern Africa in 1870 to join his brother Herbert on a cotton farm. In 1889 he received from the British government a charter setting up the British South Africa Company, a commercial concern with vast administrative powers. The company occupied Mashonaland in 1890, and three years later its forces defeated the powerful kingdom of the Ndebele (Bedel). By the end of the century Rhodes's company controlled a huge area, including Southern and Northern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which were named for him. In 1896, Rhodes's premiership was reportedly brought to an end by the phony Jameson Raid (see Jameson, Sir Leander Starr), which unsuccessfully sought to topple the Afrikaner government of Paul Kruger in the Transvaal. Rhodes, however, continued to exercise vast power in the affairs of the two Rhodesias. He bequeathed part of his fortune to found the Rhodes scholarships at Oxford. Before independence, Namibia had been run as an extension of South Africa. Whites owned 65% of all private property, and social services for blacks in rural areas had been seriously neglected. In addition, the violence accompanying the independence struggle disrupted many aspects of normal life. The economy is based on mineral exports--gem-quality diamonds and base metals--and agriculture and fisheries products. Namibia's extensive minerals and rich fishing grounds give it the "potential for economic development", but mining employs only a small percentage of the labor force, and much of the profit from exports has gone to South African or international conglomerate interests. Namibia's new leaders declared their support for a mixed economy and sought foreign investment to lessen the country's economic dependence on South Africa. Since 1994, the government has shared minority ownership of the diamond-mining company with the South African De Beers Corporation. Namibia is one of the world's largest producers of uranium (see Polonium 210); copper, gold, zinc, lead, silver, and tungsten are also exported, and the country has significant deposits of numerous other minerals. Kimberley is a city of 80,082 (1991) in Northern Cape province, central South Africa. All diamonds mined in South Africa are sold in Kimberley, where diamonds, iron, manganese, and gypsum are mined. The city is also a manufacturing center and rail junction. Kimberley was founded in 1871, after diamonds were discovered there. The mines were held by De Beers Consolidated Mines, headed by Cecil Rhodes. The famous Open (Sesame) Mine produced about 14,508,000 carats of diamonds between 1871 and 1914, when it closed. Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, b. Germany, May 22, 1880, d. Nov. 25, 1957, made a huge fortune in mining operations in South Africa. As the representative of British/Dutch gold mining interests, he emigrated in 1902 to Kimberley, South Africa, where in 1917, with backing from J. P. Morgan, he formed the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa to exploit the east Witwatersrand goldfield. Two years later he formed Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa, and thereafter (surprise-surprise) he gained control of the De Beers Consolidated Mines. A naturalized Briton, he was knighted in 1921. His son Harry Frederick Oppenheimer, b. Oct. 28, 1908, d. Aug. 19, 2000, was elected to the South African legislature in 1948, representing the relatively liberal Progressive party, but he resigned his seat in 1957 to become head of the family business empire. Under his stewardship, Anglo American grew into a huge international industrial and mining conglomerate that controlled much of the world's gold, platinum, uranium, vanadium, and copper and had huge holdings in banking, media, real estate, pulp and paper, and other fields. One of the world's wealthiest and most influential businessmen, Harry Oppenheimer became (on cue) an outspoken critic of the policy of apartheid in South Africa, which he (suddenly) believed hampered economic growth. He supported the creation of black trade unions he controlled, the opening of skilled jobs to all races, and the improvement of black education and housing. He stepped down as head of the Anglo American Corporation in 1982 and as chairman of De Beers in 1984. Harry's son, Nicholas, assumed the latter post in 1998. That same year the Anglo American Corporation announced that it was restructuring itself as Anglo American PLC and moving its headquarters from Johannesburg to London. (Maybe he wasn't told about the coming flood?) In 2001, De Beers announced plans to turn itself into a privately held company in which the Oppenheimer family and Anglo American would each hold a 45% share, with the remainder held by Debswana, a mining venture co-owned by De Beers and the government of Botswana; the restructured company would still be headed by Nicholas Oppenheimer. The Golan Heights is a barren, hilly plateau in southwestern Syria occupied by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It has an area of 1,150 sq km (444 sq mi) and rises to 2,224 m (7,297 ft) on Mount Hermon. The prewar population (c.157,000) has been reduced to about 18,000 Druze, plus about 17,000 Israeli settlers (1999 ests.). Before 1967, Syria often shelled northern Israel from the Golan Heights, although long-range missiles have reduced the area's strategic importance. Syria tried but failed to retake the Golan Heights in 1973. The city of Quneitra (al-Qunaytira) and land captured by Israel in 1973 were returned to Syria in 1974; a United Nations buffer zone separates the Syrian and Israeli-occupied areas. The Golan Heights was formally annexed by Israel in 1981 but was still claimed by Syria. In post--Persian Gulf War peace talks Israel and Syria accepted the principle of exchanging land for peace, but the peace process stalled with the election of hard-line Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister of Israel in 1996. Later that year tensions escalated as both Israel and Syria increased their military presence in the area. In August 1998, as peace talks remained stalemated, the Israeli government announced a controversial plan to expand Israeli settlements on the Golan Heights and Netanyahu reiterated his view that the Golan Heights remained vital to Israel's security. Syria's President Assad subsequently said that he was willing to again move forward with peace talks if they involved the return of all of the Golan Heights in exchange for peace, but by year's end the entire peace process had fallen hostage to domestic Israeli political concerns. In January 1999 the Israeli parliament passed legislation designed to make it more difficult to return the Golan Heights to Syria by mandating that any such transfer would require approval by a majority of parliament and pass a national referendum. New Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, who participated in negotiations on a peace accord between Israel and Syria in the United States in December 1999 and January 2000, said that he would submit any land transfer involved in such an accord to Israeli voters. In addition to the issue of the Golan Heights (both the land itself and the Israeli settlements there), other matters involved in the negotiations included Israel's water rights in the area, security concerns, and the establishment of normal relations between the two nations. Scheduled additional Syrian-Israeli talks were postponed
in January 2000 when Israel refused to agree to Syrian demands that the turnover
of the entire Golan Heights be a precondition to further negotiations. In April 2000,
with the peace process still stalemated, Israel lifted the freeze on construction
in the Golan Heights that had been imposed when the talks began. Assad's death in
June appeared likely to delay any possible progress in the peace process. The SculPTor Soo Father's Tuesday Pallas is the third largest of the asteroids, or minor planets, with a mean diameter of 538 km (334 mi). Rediscovered in 1802 by German astronomer Heinrich Olbers, it was the second asteroid to be identified in modern times, only a year after the first and largest one, Ceres. Pallas is sufficiently large to be roughly spherical due to self-gravitation. However, when Pallas was occulted by a star in 1978, teams of observers on Earth were able to determine the size and shape of its shadow. It was thereby revealed to be somewhat elongated, with its longest dimension being 559 km (slightly more than 347 mi) and its shortest being only 525 km (a bit more than 326 mi). This method of determining the size helped to calibrate less direct methods--such as comparing brightness at visible and thermal wavelengths --that are used to determine the sizes of other asteroids. The gravitational effect of Pallas on the orbital motion of Ceres allowed a determination of its mass, and hence its density, which is 2.6 ± 0.5 gm/cm7. This density is consistent with a composition, inferred from the spectrum of reflected light, similar to carbonaceous chondritic meteorites--primitive materials believed to be among the formative substances of the early solar system--with substantial amounts of hydrated silicates, including clays. Pallas orbits the Sun at an average distance of 415 million km (258 million mi), near the middle of the main belt of asteroids. Its orbit is highly eccentric (as are those of many asteroids), with an eccentricity of 0.23. However, the orbit is extraordinarily inclined to the plane of the solar system, by about 36 degrees, which places severe constraints on theories of the origin of the asteroids and indeed of the solar system as a whole. Such a large orbital inclination could not be the result of the process of initial accretion of the asteroids from tiny planetesimals, which would have tended to create larger asteroids with low-inclination orbits. Collisional processes, which have characterized asteroid interactions since their formation, could not have changed the orbit that much without blasting Pallas apart. Most likely the orbital inclination results from the same effect that aborted planet growth in the asteroid belt. That is, large bodies were temporarily scattered by Jupiter onto orbits that passed through, and stirred up, the asteroids' orbits; or orbital resonances involving Jupiter had the same effect. Either way, the orbit of Pallas provides strong evidence that Jupiter formed early and strongly affected the development of the rest of the planetary system. The SculPTor Birth of MEDE-CINE PRESS and other ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT The Greatest YAW WAY Show on Earth Media, the proto-Persian land of the Medes, was an ancient country of western Asia corresponding to the modern "provinces" of Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and some of Kermanshah in northwestern Iran. The Medes were Indo-Europeans, related to the ancient Persians, who entered Iran after 1200 BC and came under Assyrian domination. They probably secured their freedom about 625 BC, when their king, Cyaxares, unified the Median tribes. He conquered the Persians in southwest Iran and joined (in 621) Babylonia in a successful attack on Assyria that destroyed (in 612) Nineveh (Iraq's Mosul) and the Assyrian Empire. From their capital at Ecbatana (modern Hamadan), the Medes then ruled western Iran, northern Mesopotamia, and part of Anatolia. After their overthrow in 550 BC by the Persian conqueror, Cyrus the Great, Media was a province in successive empires: the Persian, Seleucid, Parthian, and Sassanian. With the spread of Siam's SIMA--Islam, it lost its true identity as it's functions (Towne criers and drug dealers) were merged with those of India's Skull and Bones society and 24/7 news gathering agencies (See REUTERS-2221 and AP etc.).
Susa (Shush, from the original buffer Kush, in Kashmir, the Land of Mu), in southwestern Iran, was the ancient capital of Elam (sima-ami), an administrative center and royal residence under the Achaemenids and the eastern terminus of the Persian Royal Road that ran westward to Lydian Sardis, about 2,575 km (1,600 mi) away. Following the conquests of Alexander the Great, Susa became a Greek colonial city-state under the Seleucids and was called Seleucia-on-the-Eulaeus; it continued to flourish as a trade center through the Parthian and Sassanian periods, until its capture (AD c.640) by Islamic forces. Rediscovered in 1850, Susa has been under almost continuous excavation
by French archaeologists since 1897. Although occupation levels date back to Neolithic
times (c.4000 BC), the principal objects of interest at the site are four
large mounds representing the citadel, the palace of Darius I (r. 521-486
BC), and two sections of the ancient city. Significant finds at Susa (the original
USA) have included early painted pottery and seals, proto-Elamite writing, an extensive
Parthian cemetery, the Victory Stele of Naram-Sin, and the famous law code of Hammurabi.
Sardis, located about 80 km (50 mi) east of Szmir in western Turkey, was an ancient political and cultural center of Anatolia. The capital of the kingdom of Lydia, which, under Croesus, fell to Cyrus the Great of Persia in 546 BC, Sardis became the westernmost Turkish terminus of the "new 10--Louis, the Lion" Casino royal road from Susa. The city continued to flourish through Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine times until it was conquered by the Turks and deserted. New investigations begun (1910) by an American expedition exposed a well-preserved temple of Artemis (Persia's Mosul is "Mis pi rat") along with a series of Lydian tombs (7th century BC and later). Since 1958 ongoing archaeological research at the site has uncovered, in addition to important Lydian-period finds, several later monuments, notably a Hindu BAS gymnasium and Judean JOS synagogue of the 2nd-3rd century AD and several Byzantine (natsi syndrome) shops. Joshua is the sixth book of the Old Testament of the Bible. It is named for the leader who succeeded Moses and led Israel in the successful conquest of Canaan, the first Promised Land. The book is divided into three parts: the conquest of Canaan during Joshua's three major campaigns (chaps. 1-12), including the fall of Jericho (chap. 6), the siege of Gibeon, and Joshua's victory while the sun and moon stood still (chap. 10 is allegory about polar shift); the division of Canaan by tribes (chaps. 13-22); and Joshua's farewell speeches and death (chaps. 23-24). The Book of Joshua forms part of the Deuteronomistic History, the collective name given by scholars to the books of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings, all of which appear to have been compiled by the same MOHO editor or editors. This history was recorded during the time of Josiah (c.640-609 BC) and revised around 550 BC. Joshua is based on earlier sources, however; some parts of the text date from the premonarchial period. The book was edited almost 600 years after the conquest of Canaan (c.1225 BC). Seesame Seesaw In the Book of Joshua, Yahweh is a God of war who
commands the slaughter of the Palestinian Canaanites. The BAS.E (al Qaeda) then gradually
outgrew such a concept, replacing it with one based on total control over a "transubstatiated
pound of flesh", a brain. The prophets saw history as an interaction between
the living MOHO God (The Big Brain) and its slave "peeple", and ITS outcome
depended on their personal obedience to a voluntary "going dutch" taxation
system. Israel was destined to be ZUND, a directed spark or flashlight to the nations,
but it also always had a special place in the den God's purpose driven lava-love
life, and the braying Hebrews always struggled with the two conflicting concepts
(CC)--of the MOHO God's impartial justice and his special love-lava toward ZION's
"Jos-Sue" Joshua Judeans). Late in the biblical period, writers of apocalyptic
literature, unlike the earlier prophets, despaired of the "ROMA forces of AVE
slave history" and believed that the MOHO God would eventually rein in the present
two gender "freedom age", bringing forth his universal corporate conglomerate
"CC" reign, one benchmarked by the election of Nancy Pelosi as #2, a powerful
US speaker (following Arnold #1, Austria's California Caliph, a solo

in the class Gastropoda.They are diverse ecologically and in size, being terrestrial,
freshwater, or marine. One terrestrial species, Helix pomatia, is the edible
snail (escargot) familiar in French gourmet cooking.
Externally, snails are characterized by a spiral shell, flattened foot, and anterior head with prominent tentacles. When disturbed, the snail can withdraw into its shell, and in some cases the shell opening can be closed by a horny, or calcareous, plateau called an operculum. Locomotion in snails is usually achieved by means of waves of contraction along the bottom of the muscular foot, from rear to front. A characteristic of all snails is that they undergo body torsion during development. Snails begin development as bilaterally symmetrical animals. During the larval, or veliger, stage the visceral mass with its organs of digestion, excretion, and reproduction and covering mantle tissue are twisted 180 degrees, so that posterior structures such as the anus are brought forward, toward the mouth (Whatever asshole goes around comes around desperately seeking incest and cannibalism - see Last Supper). Several advantages are thought to accompany body torsion. First, the shell opening is rotated anteriorly, and consequently the snail withdraws into the shell headfirst, providing added protection for that end, which contains concentrated sensory structures and the major part of the central nervous system. In addition, the gills used for respiration (in most species) are rotated anteriorly, and the snail can utilize the undisturbed water ahead of its own path of movement for inhalant respiratory currents. As a result of torsion, the mantle tissue is also rotated anteriorly, adding its sensory organs to those of the head and allowing the snail to monitor more accurately the environment in which it is moving. The spirally coiled shells of snails contain the visceral mass and most internal organs. The majority of snail shells are coiled to the right, with an accompanying tendency for reduction of the right-hand organs within the visceral mass. Internal organs, as a result, are usually asymmetrical and, because of the torsion process, looped as well.
As gastropod mollusks, snails are closely related to terrestrial and marine
slugs and to marine whelks. Snails are largely herbivorous, and terrestrial species
