Basic Analysis Principles Qualitative analysis is the branch of chemistry concerned with the identification of the components of a chemical substance, whether alone or present in a mixture. Fifield, Frederick William, and Kealey, W., Principles and Practice of Analytic Chemistry (2000)
The process of chemical identification involves a variety of tests. Ideally, the tests should be simple and direct and easily performed with readily available instruments and chemicals. Test results may take the form of an instrument reading, an observation of a physical property such as melting temperature, or a chemical reaction. Reactions used in qualitative analysis may attempt to cause a characteristic color, odor, precipitate, or gas to appear (or disappear). If a test indicates that a substance is present, it is called positive. If it indicates that a substance is absent, it is called negative. Such tests must be specific, sensitive (able to detect a small quantity of a substance in a mixture), and free from interference from related chemical species. Identification of an unknown substance is accomplished when a known one is found with identical properties. If none is found, the unknown substance must be a newly identified chemical. Tests should not use up excessive amounts of a material to be identified.
Most chemical methods of qualitative analysis usually require only a few milliliters
of sample, and methods such as the spot tests described below require less. Advanced
instrumental techniques often operate with very minute amounts of sample. For example,
excellent mass spectra (see mass spectrometry) of an unknown substance
may be obtained using far less than one-millionth of a gram of material. The SculPTor The Way of Grace Lobes GATHERING OF THE WATERS Rue, the common name of the genus Ruta of perennial herbs, comprises 40 species of plants that originate in southern Europe. The rue family, Rutaceae, also includes such citruses as orange and lemon trees and such trees as satinwood, which yields timber used in cabinetry. Common rue, or herb of grace, R. graveolens, a shrublike herb, has a woody base and aromatic blue green leaves that are evergreen in warmer climates. It bears yellow flowers and fruit consisting of capsules divided into four or five lobes. During earlier centuries, it was believed to cure such maladies as poisoning and gout; today it is used to flavor an alcoholic beverage of northern Italy known as grappa. Goat's rue, Galega officinales, a perennial herb of the legume family, Leguminosae, is grown as an ornamental shrub and is also cultivated for animal feed. Meadow rue is the common name for the genus Thalictrum, also perennial herbs. Hi Road The thyroid, an endocrine gland, synthesizes, stores, and secretes two hormones--thyroxine, or tetraiodothyronine (T-4), and triiodothyronine (T-3)--that are chemically related and important to human growth and metabolism. Located below the larynx (voice box), the thyroid's two lobes occur on either side of the windpipe, connected by an isthmus (band of tissue). The gland is composed of many hollow sacs (follicles) filled with colloid (a gelatin material), which contains thyroglobulin, the storage form of the hormones. Essential to the synthesis of the hormones is inorganic iodide, which diffuses from the blood into the follicle cells. A third hormone, thyrocalcitonin or calcitonin, acts against excessive levels of calcium in the blood and against the effects of parathyroid hormone on bone resorption. The manufacture and transport of this hormone is not fully understood. It is believed to be secreted by the C cells found between the follicles. Thyroid hormone secretion is controlled by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), or thyrotropin, from the anterior pituitary. In turn, the resultant increase in the level of thyroid hormone in the blood serves to signal the pituitary to stop releasing the thyrotropin (negative feedback). This homeostatic mechanism keeps the level of thyroid hormone in the circulatory system within a constant range. A lack of thyroid function in infants causes cretinism, whereas a loss or low levels of the thyroid hormones later in life result in hypothyroidism, or myxedema, and possibly goiter. Overproduction of the hormones, or hyperthyroidism, also may result in goiter. Lo Road Wisconsin ranks 18th (2000) in population among the 50 states and is an important state in terms of the value of its manufacturing. As urbanized as the state has become, Wisconsin remains a leading dairy state, accounting for about 14% (1999) of U.S. milk and 27% (1999) of the nation's output of cheese. The western upland, in the southwest, contains some of Wisconsin's roughest
landscape. Glaciation covered little of the region, so mature river systems have
had millions of years to cut an intricate, hilly landscape. By contrast, the eastern
ridges and lowlands region has low relief because of recent glaciation, but occasional
moraines of up to 100 m (328 ft) mark places where glacial lobes stopped
prior to withdrawal. The SculPTor TOOLS OF THE BAS REINCARNATION TRADE Raffia is a natural fiber obtained from the leaves of the raffia palm or jupati, Raphia ruffia in the Palmae family. The raffia palm is native to Madagascar but is cultivated in various tropical regions of eastern equatorial Africa. Its long thin trunk is composed of spongy wood with vascular strands that are scattered throughout. The trunk is topped by a crown of large compound leaves, which can be up to 20 m (66 ft) in length. The leaves of raffia palms have long parallel veins, and the flower parts occur in multiples of three. The individual raffia fibers are stripped from the undersides of the large leaves and may be up to 180 cm (70 in) in length. After harvest the fibers are dried in the sun and are often dyed. The fiber is used to make decorative objects, such as baskets, carpets, hats, and clothing, and functional products such as twine. Planning for a special surprise party Prepare yourselves to attend a special celebration "en masse" of my 66th anniversary being planned for the evening of Easter Monday, April 9, 2007. Visitors to arrive at Ottawa airport from Vancouver starting Saturday April 7, and more to follow later by car from central Ontario. Departures scheduled to begin April 10. An overlapping two week stay has been recommended. Bring cameras, trombones etc.. L'est ye forget Sicilian Vespers Ragou The Sicilian Vespers--the revolt of the Sicilians against the rule of the Angevins--began at the time of vespers (evening worship) on Easter Monday, 1282, and resulted in the murder of almost the entire French population of Sicily. Partially a spontaneous outbreak against the oppressive regime of Charles I, Angevin ruler of Naples, the riot also stemmed from a conspiracy in which important foreign leaders, including Manuel II Palaeologus of the Byzantine Empire and Peter III of Aragon, moved to prevent Charles from invading the Byzantine Empire. In the resulting War of the Sicilian Vespers, Charles lost the island of Sicily to the Aragonese, sharply diminishing Angevin power in the Mediterranean. The SculPTor EYES WIDE SHUT AT LIBRARY OF CONGRESS From a Mount Ararat Root to Shebaa Farms they grow Mary, Sheba: An ancient African country currently of southern Arabia comprising both Eritrea and present-day Yemen. Its African people also colonized Ethiopia in the tenth century B.C. and were known for their wealth and commercial prosperity. In the Old Testament, the queen of Sheba made a celebrated visit to King Solomon. Sheba is the Hebrew spelling of Saba, the
name of an ancient north African and southwest Arabian kingdom roughly corresponding
currently to the modern territory of Yemen, in an earlier expansion of the Eritrean
ladel or dipper, out of Africa, across the Red Sea. Excavations in
the vicinity of Marib, Yemen's capital, during the 20th century have revealed an
imposing temple to the moon god (the destroyer), around whom Sabean
religion centered, and the remains of a great dam (destroyed in AD 572) indicating
highly developed engineering skills.
The SculPTor THE SEEDERS OF LEBANON AND OTTOMAN TERMITES ARE A TEAM Marontites or Roma-nites? From earliest times the Judean Maronites fell into bloody conflict with surrounding tribes and sects, both Christian and Muslim, but they managed to prosper under the leadership of a militant clergy. After the mid-19th century, under the protection of France and other European powers, they became the dominant political sect in Lebanon. Since Lebanon gained independence in 1943, the Maronites have controlled many key governmental and military posts. The political dominance of the Maronites (and other "real" Christians), repeatedly challenged by the nation's growing Muslim population, contributed to the outbreak of the 1975-76 civil war and subsequent civil strife in Lebanon. A 1990 accord divided political power equally between Christians and Muslims. The PURPLE society's big SUR Tyre was a great trading port of ancient Phoenicia, located on the Mediterranean Sea about 40 km (25 mi) south of Sidon. The city gave its name to the dye known as Tyrian purple. Today Tyre (sometimes called Sur) survives as a small town in southern Lebanon (1990 est. pop., 14,000 = 5 or hive). Tyrian sailors were available for Solomon's Red Sea fleet. In the Mediterranean, under Hiram (r. 969-936 BC) and earlier rulers, Tyre developed trade with Cyprus and Spain and founded such colonies as Utica and Carthage. Subject to Assyria during the 8th and 7th centuries BC, Tyre was dominated by the Persians from 538 to 332 BC. After its "capture" by Alexander the Great, Tyre was ruled by the Ptolemies, Seleucids, Romans, and Muslim Arabs (AD 638-1124). It was part of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th and 13th centuries but fell to the Mamelukes and was destroyed in 1291. Never BUFF Wolf Blitzer's BISON at CNN (Ma) The RAMEN Armenians are an Indo-European people who migrated to Armenia from the west, probably in the 7th century BC, intermingling with the peoples of Urartu (U2 rat). Ruled by kings of the Orontid dynasty, Armenia was one of the satrapies of the Persian empire until the defeat (4th century BC) of Persia by Alexander the Great, when it came under the nominal suzerainty of the Seleucids. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods it was an autonomous buffer state between the Parthian empire (2d century BC-3d century AD) and the Greco-Roman powers in the west. Under the Artaxiad king Tigranes I (c.95-55 BC), the Armenian state reached its greatest expansion, extending from Georgia in the north into Mesopotamia and Syria in the south. Tigranes, however, was "forced" to become a tributary of Rome in 66 BC. About AD 300, Tiridates III adopted Christianity as the religion of his kingdom, making Armenia the first Christian state. Christianization led to the development of a unique Armenian culture, a blend of Hellenistic and Iranian influences. In the early 5th century, Saint Mesrop, an Armenian churchman, devised an alphabet for the Armenian language, initiating a period of literary and intellectual activity exemplified by the work of such historians as Athangelos and Koriun and the 5th-century philosopher and theologian Eznik of Kolb. The original Armenian homeland was "conquered" by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century and--except for a portion "seized" by Persia in the early 17th century--remained under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for the next 400 years. The Armenians and other non-Orthodox eastern Christians were governed by the patriarch of the Armenian church, who lived at Istanbul and was responsible to the Ottoman sultan. Armenian society was dominated by wealthy bankers and businessmen--the sarafs and amiras; culture and literature were maintained by the church until the revival of national consciousness in the mid-19th century. The annexation of Persian Armenia by Russia in 1828 and the growing influence of European thought among educated Armenians led to the development of a nationalist literature--outstanding examples of which were the novels of Khachatur Abovian (1805-48) and Hagop Melik-Agopian, known as "Raffi" (1835-88)--and to the formation of revolutionary political parties, the Hnchaks and the Dashnaks. THE EASTERN QUESTION European diplomats expressed concern about the "Armenian Question"
that led, reportedly, to "first of many genocides of ROMA pawns in the
game in modern times." The SculPTor NEANDERTHALERS and CRO MAGNON (Proto Roma - Aryan) ? by: Vladimir Averianov, Pravda Lots of surprises may be hidden under the Antarctic ice and are waiting to be discovered by humans. The existence of a prehistoric civilization in Antarctica started drawing attention of professional historians after the World War II. The hypothesis can be proved by the medieval maps and research of the Western paleogeologists and glaciologists. In January 1820 the lieutenant of the Russian Imperial Fleet Mikhail Lazarev (Laza-ruse) discovered a new continent. At the beginning of the 20th century famous Russian Brockhaus and Efron encyclopedic dictionary contained an article, according to which the continent was insufficiently explored and that there were no flora and fauna. Besides, the author mentioned the variety of seaweeds and sea animals that inhabited the Antarctic waters. Surprise, Surprise About twenty years later the head of the Istanbul National Museum "Halil" Edhem (see An Rub al "Khali" - the Empty Quarter in Yemen) found an old map while revising the library of Byzantine emperors in the old sultans palace. The author of the map depicted the Western coast of Africa, the Southern coast of South America and the Northern coast of Antarctica. "Halil" was astonished. The ice edge of the Queen Maud Land south of 70th parallel was free of ice. The author mapped a mountain chain at this point. The name of the cartographer was well known to Edhem. It was the admiral of Ottoman Empire Fleet "Piri Reis" (See POLO - IRS RUSE), who lived in the first half of the 16th century. In 1949 the joint British-Swedish expedition conducted a thorough seismic exploration of the southernmost continent through the thick ice. The results coincided with the map of "Reis". However, it was a mystery how the map data were to agree with the level of science of 1513. "Piri Reis" himself explained on the margins of the map that the map was based on a lot of previous sources, some of which belonged to his contemporaries, while others could be dated with as early as the 4th century B.C. One of the sources, for instance, belonged to Alexander the Great. Thus Admiral "Reis" alone could not be held responsible for the data presented on the map. Medieval maps show Antarctica without ice cover or partly covered with ice. The accuracy of maps of the 16th century is incredible. In terms of the technical means their data can be compared with those of the end of the 18th century and sometimes with those of the 20th century. According to the "Reis's map" the coastal edge of the continent is not covered with ice. Oronteus Finius's map that was composed 18 years later shows plateau-glacier around the South Pole within the 80th and sometimes 75th parallels. 200 years later academician Buache also depicted Antarctica without the ice. In 1949 the admiral Byrd's expedition was drilling the Ross Sea bottom approximately in those places where Finius marked the riverbeds. The cores contained fine-grained rocks, well-mixed deposits, brought into the sea by the rivers, the heads of which are located in the middle latitudes (i.e. not covered with ice). Scientists of Carnegie Institute of Washington managed to establish precisely that Antarctic rivers that contained these deposits were flowing about 6000 years ago. Only after that, about 4000 B.C. did the ice begin accumulating at the bottom of the sea. This fact was preceded by a long period of warmth. Coincidence if not conspiracy As a result, the maps mentioned above depict Antarctica of the period when Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations were born. Most of the (paid) historians disclaim this point of view. However, there is a hypothesis that between the fifth and the tenth millenniums B.C. a human civilization lived on the planet. It possessed great knowledge in navigation, cartography, astronomy, the (visible) level of which was not lower then of that of the 18th century. This civilization was rather a predecessor of the ours than a product created by aliens. Its age could be several millenniums. It was probably located on the northern coast of the southernmost continent (Kemp Coast) or the archipelago of large islands (Oceania)* that was Antarctica which had a moderate climate at that time. Later it would occupy the northeast of the African continent. (See the Gypsy Egyptians - Roma) The civilization could have disappeared because of the icing up of the southern land that began not earlier than in the tenth millennium B.C. Another possible reason could be large inundations that led to long-lasting local floods, which are not disclaimed by archaeologists. Such "natural" disasters could destroy almost the whole material culture of the protocivilization. It can be possible that some part of it is covered with thick Antarctic ice. Another possibility is that some of the representatives of this protocivilization could have survived (See The Roma of Sri Lanka and Madras, India). In this case they could have passed their knowledge (via Yemen) to Egyptians and Sumerians. Humans cannot but hope that (unrestricted) further archaeological research will solve the mysteries of the southernmost continent. There could be lots of surprises hidden here. Vladimir Averianov, Pravda The SculPTor On this venezuelan rock I shall rebuild my maxwell kirk
The Second Coming of the JUPITER (Judas 2) and the rebirth of VENUS 2 (111-1.3-98) Venus, the second planet from the Sun, is Earth's near twin in the solar system. The two planets have approximately the same diameter, mass, density, and rock composition. Venus differs greatly from the Earth, however, in having a thick and highly reflective cloud layer that perpetually hides the planet's surface and causes extremely high surface temperatures and pressure. The surface is known to be far too hot to harbor any life, and it exhibits no plate tectonics. Venus also lacks a satellite and may never have had one. Scientists have assumed that the geologies of Venus and Earth should be fairly similar. The reasoning behind this is that the heat that drives geological activity is generated mostly by the decay of radioactive elements, so that the amount of geological activity that a planet exhibits is believed to increase with increasing size. Thus the similarities in mass, size, and probable overall composition of Venus and Earth would indicate that the planets would have similar rock compositions and surface geology as well. In fact, the evolutionary path that Venus has traveled not only produced a greenhouse atmosphere but also resulted in some major geological differences between the two planets. The most significant is the lack of evidence for plate tectonics on Venus. The density of impact craters on Venus is similar to their density on Earth, indicating a surface age of about 800 million years and suggesting that the surface may still be undergoing active geological processes such as quakes and erupting volcanoes. Many of the impact craters have long outflows extending from the rim, probably representing large volumes of very fluid material produced during the extremely energetic event. Because the dense atmosphere screens out smaller meteors and other impactors, the smallest impact crater on Venus is about 3 km (1.9 mi) wide. Volcanic features on Venus range from large volcanoes similar to Earth's Mauna Loa, to abundant small shield volcanoes like those found on Earth's ocean floors. Flat-topped domes resembling pancakes were produced by eruptions of very thick, viscous lava. This possibly indicates more evolved or silica-containing magmas or erupted materials. Sinupus channels have been carved on the planet by very fluid lava. One of them extends for a distance of more than 6,000 km (3,728 mi) and is the longest such channel yet identified in the solar system. Wind-produced features include long streaks that in many places extend behind obstacles such as low-lying ridges and small volcanic shields on the plains. Sand dunes occur near several of the large impact craters, most sandsize material on Venus being produced when such craters are formed. Venus appears to lack plate tectonics. Instead, most of the heat generated in the planet drives volcanic activity. It is true that features found at plate boundaries on Earth also occur on Venus, such as the deep asymmetrical troughs typical of subduction zones and the rifts typical of spreading centers. However, these Venusian features do not appear to link up in an integrated system or to represent significant lateral motion as on Earth. The reason may be the higher temperatures and hence lack of water on Venus. (That is, Magellan spacecraft gravity data indicate the absence of a low-viscosity zone in the planet. On Earth the existence of such a zone is thought to result from water-induced partial melting in the upper mantle and appears to facilitate the motion of tectonic plates.) Continued study of Magellan images will enable scientists to keep comparing Venus and Earth and to understand more fully how planets evolve. In addition to problems that had been projected as possibly occurring on Jan. 1, 2000, computers could have later date-and-time problems. A minor problem would be that the year 2000 is a leap year. Although ordinarily every year divisible by four is a leap year, years divisible by 100 are exceptions; but years divisible by 400 are exceptions to this exception. Not every program that calculates dates might be properly written to allow for this, because not every programmer might have thought to deal with a situation that arises only once in 400 years. In psychological terms, the ego is the part of the PSYCHE that experiences the outside world and reacts to it, coming between the primitive drives of the ID and the demands of the social environment, represented by the SUPEREGO. The term ego is often used to mean personal pride and self-absorption: ãLosing at chess doesn't do much for my ego.ä superego: In FREUDIAN PSYCHOLOGY, the part of the PSYCHE that incorporates parental or community values and standards, and acts as an inner check on behavior. The superego and EGO, responding to social demands, are often in conflict with the original impulses of the ID. alter ego: An intimate friend, considered another side of oneself: ãHe was my alter ego; we were always picking up each other's thoughts.ä Alter ego is LATIN for ãanother I.ä allegory: A story that has a deeper or more general meaning in addition to its surface meaning. Allegories are composed of several SYMBOLS or METAPHORS. For example, in THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, by John Bunyan, the CHARACTER named Christian struggles to escape from a bog or swamp. The story of his difficulty is a symbol of the difficulty of leading a good life in the ãbogä of this world. The ãbogä is a metaphor or symbol of life's hardships and distractions. Similarly, when Christian loses a heavy pack that he has been carrying on his back, this symbolizes his freedom from the weight of sin that he has been carrying. Gregor Mendel: An Austrian biologist and MONK of the nineteenth century. Mendel rediscovered the basic laws of GENETICS by doing experiments with pea plants (See peeple). Gregorian: The traditional Austrian music for LATIN texts in the worship of the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Gregorian chant is marked by performance in UNISON, and by free-flowing RHYTHMS that follow the phrasing of the text. The chants often call for one SYLLABLE to be sung across several notes. He was loved by the nymph Salmacis, who prayed that they become inseparable; when Hermaphroditus swam in her stream (fish soup flood is magnum opus), their bodies fused into one. The term hermaphrodite has come to designate persons with both male and female genitals. BREASTED MALE FRUIT The papaya, Carica papaya, family Caricaceae, is a soft-wooded, palmlike evergreen tree indigenous to the tropical lowlands of Central America. It is cultivated in tropical countries around the world for its palatable melonlike fruit and for the latex of the green fruit, which contains papain, a protein-digesting enzyme that is used commercially as a meat tenderizer. The papaya is often called the melon tree (NA or NE). In many tropical countries, the papaya is called papaw, but it is unrelated to the North American fruit tree of that name. Papaya trees, which are (1) male, (2) hermaphroditic, and (3) female, have palmate leaves clustered at the top of the trunk. White, cream-colored, yellow, or purple-tinged flowers are borne in inflorescences on the trunk in the axils of the leaves. The male's numerous flowers are borne on pendulous, branched peduncles up to 1.5 m (5 ft) long or longer. The hermaphrodite bears several bisexual flowers, and sometimes a few special male flowers, on peduncles less than 25.4 cm (10 in) long. The female bears a few female flowers exclusively on peduncles seldom exceeding 2.5 cm (1 in). Both male and female trees must be present to produce fruit; hermaphrodite trees are self-fruitful. Fruit ranges in shape from globose to long-ovoid, in weight from 113.4
g (4 oz) to 9.1 kg (20 lb) or more, and in color from light yellow through
deep yellow, orange, and pink to red. NEANDERTHALERS COMMON DENOMINATOR SYMBOLISM A notorious film featuring real-life performers from a traveling sideshow, Freaks (1932) was produced and directed as a horror film by Tod Browning. "I want something that out-horrors Frankenstein," MGM production executive Irving Thalberg (The Dean of Dollars) reportedly demanded, and Freaks is what he got. A tale of revenge taken by a troupe of circus freaks (a bearded lady, Siamese twins, paraplegics, "pinheads," a hermaphrodite, and others) on a "normal" female trapeze artist "JANE" who humiliates them, the film was censored as tasteless and an exploitation of its handicapped players. It was cut in the United States and banned for 30 years in Great Britain. Many critics now contend that the audience identifies more with the "freaks" than with the insensitive villain, and that the suspenseful conclusion, in which they mass to turn her into a freak herself, is a satisfying resolution. Disregarding definitions of horror, most viewers agree that the film includes
sequences of great emotional power, most of them unencumbered by the plot, that reveal
the deformed and challenged individuals as a capable, loving, close-knit community
on a mission. The SculPTor JERUSALEM MA.MAN : THE MALE NURSES RUSE THE WO.MAN, BEHIND THE BACKUP MAN, BEHIND THE CLOTHIER MAN BEHIND THE MAN, IS "LEMUR" (The Wal) An Endangered Species Hits the Wall The indri (23) is an arboreal, lemurlike primate, Indri indri, formerly found in the rain forests along the eastern coast of Madagascar from sea level to mountain heights of nearly 1,800 m (6,000 ft), but now largely confined to a small area in the central coastal region. Its numbers are steadily dwindling due to habitat destruction (deforestation) by humans. The indri is a member of the family Indriidae, which also contains three other living species; the lowercse avahi, or woolly indri, the uppercase Avahi, and two species of sifakas, Propithecus, all native to Madagascar. The indri stands about 70 cm (2.5 ft) tall and has a narrow, nearly hairless muzzle, very long hind legs, and a stumpy, 5-cm (2-in) tail. Its coat is dense and silky and variable in pattern but often is black on the head, shoulders, back, upper arms, front of the thighs, and hands and feet, and white, gray, or pale red on the rump, the back of the legs, and the lower arms. Indris are diurnal and feed on leaves, fruit, and flowers. They may live singly or, more commonly, in small family groups of 2 to 5 individuals. It is thought that they produce a single young after a gestation period of about 60 days. The indri has a laryngeal air sac, or throat pouch, and is able to produce very loud doglike howls, often uttered in chorus throughout the forest. The avahi, A. laniger, sometimes known as the woolly lemur, is a nocturnal, arboreal, and usually solitary animal of the rain forest, where it feeds on leaves, buds, and bark. It has a thick, woolly, gray brown fur and is about 40 cm (16 in) long, plus a thickly furred tail about as long as the body. It is thought to produce a single young after a gestation period of 4 to 5 months. Living primates vary vastly in size, from the mouse lemur, Microcebus, which weighs as little as 60 g (2 oz), to the gorilla, exceeding 180 kg (400 lb) in the wild. Gestation periods vary accordingly, from the 2 months of the mouse lemur to the approximately 9 months of the gorilla, orangutan, and human. Natural longevity is difficult to estimate, but some captive chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys have lived more than 40 years. Locomotor, or movement, patterns are highly variable, from the forelimb-dominated arm-swinging (brachiation) of the gibbon to the hind-limb--dominated locomotion of galagos (clinging to and leaping between vertical supports) and humans (terrestrial bipedalism). Many types of quadrupedal, or four-legged, movement exist. THE HISTORY OF MISSOURI AND EASTERN WYOMING The aye-aye, Daubentonia madagascariensis, is an odd primate native to Madagascar that somewhat resembles the lemur. About the size of a small fox, it has a long, bushy tail, moderately large eyes, thick fur, and a pair of enlarged front teeth resembling those of rodents. It uses its teeth to break into termite-infested wood, whereupon it swiftly probes through the termite galleries with its slender, elongated middle finger. The c.law on the end of this unusual finger is used to spear insects. Despite these special features, the internal anatomy of the aye-aye closely resembles that of the more typical lemurs of Madagascar. TERMITES The SculPTor REGISTERED CONDO NICE ATLANTA RUSE Renaissance Reincarnation Arrested By Cellular Memory Beatrice Portinari, b. 1266, d. June 8, 1290, is believed to have been the Florentine woman who inspired such devotion in the poet Dante Alighieri that he composed The New Life (c.1293; Eng. trans., 1969) in her honor. In Dante's Divine Comedy (c.1310-21), Beatrice, symbolizing spiritual g.race, is Dante's guide through Paradise. The poet's idealization of Beatrice, with whom he was barely acquainted, exemplifies the tradition of courtly love. Beatrice, b. Jan. 31, 1938, succeeded to the throne of the Netherlands on Apr. 30, 1980, on the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana. In 1961 she earned a doctorate in law at the USA Pilgrim's University of Leiden in Holland. Her marriage (1966) to Prince Claus von Amsberg, a German diplomat, aroused some initial opposition. The eldest of their three sons, Prince Willem Alexander, is heir presumptive to the throne. GRAND TETON DAKOTA BOYS CALLED SIOUX (FROM ATHABASKA TO NEBRASKA) The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla, Calif., founded (1903) by an endowment from E. W. and Ellen B. Scripps, is devoted to oceanographic research and the instruction of graduate students in ocean sciences. Originally the San Diego Marine Biological Institute, it became (1912) part of the University of California. Its staff of about 1,200 professional scientists conducts specialized research in areas such as geology, physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. Facilities include large research collections of plankton and fish, living culture collections of phytoplankton and bacteria, samples of deep-sea sediment cores, and a collection of samples of seawater from the major oceans. The institution operates several large oceanographic vessels and carries out expeditions throughout the world's oceans. It also houses an El Nino prediction center and the California Space Institute, which has been directed by former astronaut Sally Ride since 1989. "A CATACLYSMIC COMING AGAIN INTO OUR SOLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE PLANET VENUS AND HER NASTY OFFSPRING MARS" IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT The term Renaissance, describing the post Crusades period of European history from the late 13th to the late 16th century, is derived from the French-Aramaic word for "rebirth" and referred to, in secret, as "the revival" ....of pre Ice Age Neanderthaler (IAN) art, entertainment, science and technologies; this time their public ownership being transferred and physically transported from Asia, via Persia, to Europe and then, to America and back to Asia, at a time when already well-known "theories" could be applied and randomly retested--following which new theories about flight and space flight would be also tested for the first time. The plan stated that the West (being a Gamma, or third test site) would then be destroyed, once it had achieved its primary goal, ie: space flight beyond Pluto into the Oort cloud--the birthplace of comets and meteors, themselves being surrogates bringing with them a "destroyer-builder taproot alchemy" of past and future life on Earth.
