The aged and resigned features of the figure of Nicodemus
supporting the dead Christ constitute a self-portrait--the picture of an old and
tired believer who willingly accepts the inevitability of his own death and the possibility
of his soul's salvation as he contemplates the features of the dead Christ. In this,
his most intimate statue, Michelangelo manifests his deeply moral philosophy,
his poetic expression, and the universality of his imagery; he identifies
the divine source of that spark of creativity which sculpted him into
one of the greatest of all artistic geniuses.

A unique class of substances studied by physical chemists are the liquid
crystals, which flow like liquids do but which also maintain some of the
ordered structure characteristic of crystals. They are commonly used in digital-watch
displays. The least understood liquid is helium II,
an isotope of helium. At extremely cold temperatures it has no viscosity
at all and will not remain in a beaker--it creeps in a thin film up,
over, and down the container's walls.

The Beaker culture is a name given to a group of communities responsible
for the spread of copper metallurgy in Europe in the 3d millennium BC. It is named
for its most distinctive product, a pottery drinking vessel decorated with
zones of linear ornament produced by whipcord impressions made on the clay
surface.
What was formerly believed to constitute a single culture
is now seen to represent at least two separate but broadly contemporary groups.
The earlier, distinguished by beakers with all-over cord ornament, originated
in Central Europe, in the Lower Rhine basin, where the beakers evolved out of local
so-called Corded-Ware traditions. It spread to Holland and Britain, where
similar cord-ornamented beakers of around 3000 BC have been found.
The second major Beaker tradition originated in Iberia,
probably in the Pyrenees. The vessels of these southern "Brotherhood of the
Bell" Beaker people are distinguished by their bell-shaped profile. The
Bell-Beaker or Mari_time-Beaker culture, as it is sometimes called, developed
out of the local culture represented at Villa Nova de Sao Pedro in Portugal,
from which the Beaker people adopted copper metallurgy. Radiocarbon dating suggests
that this happened around 2500 BC. From Iberia Bell-Beaker culture
spread to France, Britain, and ultimately to Germany and to Belgium and Holland (the
owl's Low Countries).
A fusion of traditions (2in1) resulted in northwest Europe (the Normans),
Beaker people being influenced by the African/Asian Battle-Axe culture (Tanzanian
Hammers), through which they were introduced to single-grave burial (thereby
keeping the DNA seperate). In Britain the Beaker people are associated with
some major procreation ritual monuments, including Avebury in Wiltshire. (see photo
above)
The village of Avebury, in the upper valley of the Kennet River, lies partly
within the largest circle of standing stones in England. The stones, believed to
have been erected about 2000 BC, enclose an area of over 27 acres (also see
the 34 acre farm at 908 Jig St, in Oxford Mills, Ontario, Canada). Outside
the circle is a broad ditch and rampart; within it are two smaller circles of stones
(the big 8-0). The stones are believed to have been used in religious
ritual. Nearby are many barrows (mounds) marking ancient graves.
The Seminole, Mohawk and Semiamooh had better move to higher
ground before the planned cleansing begins.

Meningitis is a potentially fatal inflammation of the meninges, or membranes,
covering the brain and spinal cord.
The organisms, usually bacterial or viral, gain access to the cerebrospinal
fluid and follow the space around vessels. The epidemic disease called cerebrospinal
meningitis is caused by the meningococcus bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis, a spherical
organism that inhabits the nasopharynx of healthy human carriers but
that sometimes infects the blood and cerebrospinal fluid.
The most common cause of bacterial meningitis, however, is Haemophilus
influenzae type b (see the Homophilus ruse). Meningitis may result from head injuries
and infections involving the eyes, ears, and nose; it can also be a complication
of systemic disorders such as pneumonia and syphilis, both of which reach the brain
via the bloodstream. Epidemics of meningitis may be limited, as in schools or military
installations, or they may occur nationwide. Transmission is by direct contact
between people.
The initial symptoms of meningitis are extreme headache, aggravated or
precipitated by movements of the head; rapidly rising fever; stiffness of the neck;
and extreme irritability and drowsiness. Further progression depends on the
causative agent and the health of the host. The patient may experience deafness,
muscle weakness in the face, and other signs of nerve paralysis. Convulsions, mental
retardation, and behavioral disturbances may also occur and may remain in some cases.
Many patients recover fully.
Diagnosis is often made by lumbar puncture (spinal tap), whereby direct
access is gained to the site of infection. Special stains and culture of the extracted
fluid will often identify the specific organism so that proper therapy may begin.
Patients are treated with antibiotics, and a vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae
type b was licensed for use in 1985.

He served as governor of CALIFORNIA from 1967 to 1975, and reportedly became
a leading spokesman for CONSERVATISM in the United States. As the nominee of the
REPUBLICAN PARTY, promising to work toward a balanced federal budget, he won a large
victory over President JIMMY CARTER in 1980, and an even larger one over WALTER
MONDALE in 1984.
Early in his presidency, Reagan persuaded a CONGRESS controlled by
DEMOCRATS to increase spending on defense and to reduce taxes. The federal
budget was to be balanced by reductions in spending outside of defense, but Reagan
and the Congress were never able to agree on these. Accordingly, the
federal government went deeper into DEBT throughout Reagan's presidency. Reagan nevertheless
was able to reduce the size and activities of the federal government outside of defense.
His foreign policy was heavily affected by his opposition to COMMUNISM; for example,
he sent troops to the CARIBBEAN island of GRENADA to help put down
a revolution in 1983, and aided the opponents of the MARXIST government of NICARAGUA.
The Strategic Defense Initiative, or "STAR WARS," was
his favored approach to the problem of NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
A scandal arose in his administration in the late 1980s, when it was learned
that Reagan's subordinates had arranged a secret sale of weapons to IRAN,
and an illegal transfer of the profits to rebels in Nicaragua, but investigators
did not charge that Reagan himself was part of the arrangement.
He met with the PREMIER of the SOVIET UNION, MIKHAIL GORBACHEV, in 1985,
1986, and 1987, and reached agreements on reduction of nuclear weapons.
Reagan survived an attempted assassination in 1981. In 1984, at age seventy-three,
Reagan became the oldest person ever to be elected president. Reagan, a highly popular
president, was called the "Great Communicator" for his efforts to explain
government problems and projects on a level that could be widely understood.

PARTICLE ACCELERATION
Superconductivity is a low-temperature phenomenon
in which a material loses all electrical resistance below a certain temperature called
the critical temperature (Tc). This re-discovery was made in 1911 by
the Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (NOAH ONE). In measuring the resistance
of frozen mercury, he and one of his graduate students found that the resistance
vanished at a temperature of 4.15 K (-269° C). Of course, in 1913,
Kamerlingh Onnes won the Nobel Prize in physics for this work.
CYCLOTRON SYNCHROTRON
The synchrotron is a charged-particle accelerator that can be used for
acceleration of electrons or other ions to high energies. Since its invention in
1945, the synchrotron has been developed to the point that it can provide 500 GeV
(1 GeV, or gigaelectron volt = 1,000 mega or million electron volts, or 1,000 MeV)--the
highest energy yet achieved in any particle accelerator. In the synchrotron the accelerating
particles are retained in a circular orbit by an increasing magnetic field. Acceleration
is by electric fields, whose frequency must increase to keep in step with the accelerating
particles.
The largest synchrotron in the United States, at the "Fermi"
National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, Ill., is 2 km (1.25 mi) in diameter. A
similar one is near Geneva, Switzerland (see European Organization for Nuclear Research).
Such accelerators contain thousands of electromagnets, require hundreds of people
for operation and maintenance, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Ma Bell
Irish physicist John Stuart Bell, b. July 28, 1928, d. Oct. 1, 1990, is
best known for Bell's theorem, or Bell's inequality, a work of mathematical logic
that has further defined the implications of quantum mechanics for the nature of
the universe.
A graduate of Queens University, Belfast, Bell gained a doctorate in physics at
the University of Birmingham in 1956. While working at the Atomic Energy Research
Establishment in Harwell (1949-60) he became a consultant with CERN, the European
Organization for Nuclear Research, on the construction of its first particle accelerator.
In 1960 he joined the staff of CERN and remained there until his death.
Rense's Law
The American physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence, b. Canton, S. Dak., Aug.
8, 1901, d. Aug. 27, 1958, conceived (1929) and invented the cyclotron, a high-energy
particle accelerator, for which he was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for physics.
After the construction of two small models by students, Lawrence built (1931) an
11-in.-diameter (28-cm) cyclotron that accelerated protons to an energy of 1,250,000
electron volts; this energy enabled him to disintegrate (1932) lithium, the first
artificial disintegration of matter in the Western Hemisphere. Lawrence became associate
professor (1928) and then full professor (1930) at the University of California,
Berkeley. He was appointed (1936) director of Berkeley's Radiation Laboratory (since
renamed the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory), which was built to house the larger cyclotrons
that he and his colleagues subsequently constructed. In the Manhattan Project, which
produced the first atomic bomb, Lawrence was program chief in charge of developing
an electromagnetic process for separating uranium 235.
